Norwegians were the first people to settle in Iceland in the ninth century.
Between the thirteenth and nineteenth centuries Iceland was subject first to
Norwegian rule and then to Danish rule. In 1918 Iceland managed to gain home
rule under Denmark; finally, in 1944 full independence was achieved.
Iceland's principal exports are seafood and other fish related products as
well as aluminium. 95% of the population are Lutheran Protestants and the
official language is Icelandic.
