The Kingdom of Norway was founded in approximately 900 BC. From the end of
the fourteenth century and for some 400 years Norway was united with
Denmark. Then in 1814 Norway was united with Sweden. Increasing nationalism
led to the dissolution of the union and regaining of full independence in
1905. Although Norway declared itself to be neutral during both World Wars
it was occupied by Germany from 1940 to 1945. The economy is reliant on
manufacturing industries, fishing, forestry, shipping and mining. Products
and services related to oil and natural gas are also important sources of
revenue. Moreover, Norwegian industry is able to exploit the ready
availability of energy from hydroelectric power. Evangelical Lutheranism is
the principal religion, Norwegian the official language.
