  1. Method of dating rock by assessing the amount
  2. of radioactive decay of naturally occurring
  3. isotopes. The dating of rocks may be based on
  4. the gradual decay of uranium into lead. The
  5. ratio of the amounts of `parent' to
  6. `daughter' isotopes in a sample gives a
  7. measure of the time it has been decaying,
  8. that is, of its age. Different elements and
  9. isotopes are used depending on the isotopes
  10. present and the age of the rocks to be dated.
  11. Once-living matter can often be dated by
  12. radiocarbon dating, employing the half-life
  13. of the isotope carbon-14, which is naturally
  14. present in organic tissue.
  15.
