Latin radius `ray' white, luminescent,
metallic element, symbol Rd, atomic number
88, relative atomic mass 226.02. It is found
in pitchblende in small quantities and in
other uranium ores. Radium is used in
radiotherapy, to treat cancer, and in
luminous paints. Radium bromide was first
separated by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898,
but the element itself was only isolated 1911
(by Marie Curie and A L Debierne). It is now
obtained commercially from pitchblende
reserves in Czechoslovakia, E Africa and
Colorado, USA.
