  1. In the UK, act of Parliament passed 1714 to
  2. suppress the Jacobite disorders. If three or
  3. more persons assembled unlawfully to the
  4. disturbance of the public peace, a magistrate
  5. could read a proclamation ordering them to
  6. disperse (`reading the Riot Act'); after
  7. which they might be dispersed by force. It
  8. was superseded by the 1986 Public Order Act.
