  5. non-Western attitudes. Working in films
  6. during the 1930s, he assembled and toured a
  7. percussion orchestra incorporating ethnic
  8. instruments and noise-makers, for which the
  9. First Construction in Metal 1930 was
  10. composed. He also invented the prepared piano
  11. to tour as accompanist with the dancer Merce
  12. Cunningham, a lifelong collaborator. His
  13. effect on contemporary musical thinking is
  14. summed up by the piano piece 4 minutes 33
  15. seconds 1952, in which a performer holds an
  16. audience in expectation without playing a
  17. note.
