  1. City in Alberta, Canada, on the Bow River, in
  2. the foothills of the Rockies; at 1,048
  3. m/3,440 ft it is one of the highest Canadian
  4. towns; population (1986) 671,000. It is the
  5. centre of a large agricultural region and is
  6. the oil and financial centre of Alberta and W
  7. Canada. Founded as Fort Calgary by the North
  8. West Mounted Police 1875, it was reached by
  9. the Canadian Pacific Railway 1885 and
  10. developed rapidly after the discovery of oil
  11. 1914. The 1988 Winter Olympic Games were held
  12. here. It has oil-linked and agricultural
  13. industries, such as fertilizer factories and
  14. flour mills, and is also a tourist centre;
  15. the annual Calgary Exhibition and Stampede is
  16. held in July. The University of Calgary
  17. became independent of the University of
  18. Alberta 1966.
