- 1601-1667. Spanish sculptor, painter, and
- architect, an exponent of the Baroque style
- in Spain. He was active in Seville, Madrid,
- and Granada and designed the facade of
- Granada Cathedral 1667. From 1637 he was
- employed by Philip IV to restore the royal
- collection at the Prado Museum in Madrid.
- Many of his religious paintings show the
- influence of the Venetian masters. He also
- created monumental carved screens, such as
- the reredos (altar screen) in Lebrija, near
- Seville, and graceful free-standing
- polychrome carved figures.
