  1. 1601-1667. Spanish sculptor, painter, and
  2. architect, an exponent of the Baroque style
  3. in Spain. He was active in Seville, Madrid,
  4. and Granada and designed the facade of
  5. Granada Cathedral 1667. From 1637 he was
  6. employed by Philip IV to restore the royal
  7. collection at the Prado Museum in Madrid.
  8. Many of his religious paintings show the
  9. influence of the Venetian masters. He also
  10. created monumental carved screens, such as
  11. the reredos (altar screen) in Lebrija, near
  12. Seville, and graceful free-standing
  13. polychrome carved figures.
