  3. commissions from popes, kings, and emperors
  4. for his highly finished marble portrait busts
  5. and groups. He made several portraits of
  6. Napoleon. Canova was born near Treviso. His
  7. reclining marble Pauline Borghese 1805-07
  8. (Borghese Gallery, Rome) is a fine example of
  9. cool, polished Classicism. He executed the
  10. tombs of popes Clement XIII, Pius VII, and
  11. Clement XIV. His marble sculptures include
  12. Cupid and Psyche (Louvre, Paris) and The
  13. Three Graces, the latter has been held in the
  14. Victoria and Albert Museum, London since 1990
  15. while efforts were made to raise .6 million
  16. necessary to keep it in Britain.
