- Hook-shaped peninsula in SE Massachusetts,
- USA; 100 km/60 mi long and 1.6-32 km/1-20 mi
- wide; population (1980) 150,000. Its beaches
- and woods make it a popular tourist area. It
- is separated from the rest of the state by
- the Cape Cod Canal. The islands of Martha's
- Vineyard and Nantucket are just south of the
- cape. Basque and Norse fisherfolk are
- believed to have visited Cape Cod many years
- before the English Pilgrims landed at
- Provincetown 1620. It was named after the cod
- which were caught in the dangerous shoals of
- the cape. The Kennedy family home is at the
- resort of Hyannis Port.
