  1. A carbon cycle is a sequence by which carbon 
  2. circulates and is recycled through the 
  3. natural world. The carbon element from carbon
  4. dioxide, released into the atmosphere by 
  5. living things as a result of respiration, is 
  6. taken up by plants during photosynthesis and 
  7. converted into carbohydrates; the oxygen 
  8. component is released back into the
  9. atmosphere.
  10. Today the carbon cycle is in danger of being
  11. disrupted by the increased consumption and 
  12. burning of fossil fuels, and the burning of 
  13. large tracts of tropical forests, as a result
  14. of which levels of carbon dioxide are 
  15. building up in the atmosphere and probably 
  16. contributing to the greenhouse effect.
