  1. 1753-1823. French general and politician. A
  2. member of the National Convention in the
  3. French Revolution, he organized the armies of
  4. the republic. He was war minister 1800-01 and
  5. minister of the interior 1815 under Napoleon.
  6. His work on fortification, De la defense de
  7. places fortes 1810, became a military
  8. textbook. Minister of the interior during the
  9. Hundred Days, he was proscribed at the
  10. restoration of the monarchy and retired to
  11. Germany. Carnot joined the army as an
  12. engineer, and his transformation of French
  13. military technique in the revolutionary
  14. period earned him the title of `Organizer of
  15. Victory'. After the coup d'etat of 1797 he
  16. went abroad, but returned in 1799 when
  17. Napoleon seized power. In 1814 as governor of
  18. Antwerp he put up a brilliantly successful
  19. defence.
