  1. Scattered archipelago in Micronesia, Pacific
  2. Ocean, consisting of over 500 coral islets;
  3. area 1,200 sq km/463 sq mi. The chief islands
  4. are Ponape, Kusai, and Truk in the eastern
  5. group, and Yap and Belau in the western. They
  6. are well watered and productive. Occupied by
  7. Germany 1899, and Japan 1914, and mandated by
  8. the League of Nations to Japan 1919, they
  9. were fortified, contrary to the terms of the
  10. mandate. Under Allied air attack in World War
  11. II they remained unconquered. In 1947 they
  12. became part of the US Trust Territory of the
  13. Pacific Islands.
