  1. 1918-1989. Romanian politician, leader of the
  2. Romanian Communist Party (RCP), in power
  3. 1965-89. He pursued a policy line independent
  4. of and critical of the USSR. He appointed
  5. family members, including his wife Elena
  6. Ceausescu, to senior state and party posts,
  7. and governed in an increasingly repressive
  8. manner, zealously implementing schemes that
  9. impoverished the nation. The Ceausescus were
  10. overthrown in a bloody revolutionary coup Dec
  11. 1989 and executed. Ceausescu joined the
  12. underground RCP in 1933 and was imprisoned
  13. for antifascist activities 1936-38 and
  14. 1940-44. After World War II he was elected to
  15. the Grand National Assembly and was soon
  16. given ministerial posts. He was inducted into
  17. the party secretariat and Politburo in
  18. 1954-55. In 1965 Ceausescu became leader of
  19. the RCP and from 1967 chair of the state
  20. council. He was elected president in 1974. As
  21. revolutionary changes rocked E Europe 1989,
  22. protests in Romania escalated until the
  23. Ceausescu regime was toppled. Following his
  24. execution, the full extent of his repressive
  25. rule and personal extravagance became public.
  26. In Aug 1989 a report condemning Ceausescu for
  27. widespread human-rights violations was
  28. smuggled out of Romania and presented to a
  29. United Nations human-rights conference.
