  2. sail around the world was the Victoria, one
  3. of the Spanish squadron of five vessels that
  4. sailed from Seville in Aug 1519 under the
  5. Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan. Four
  6. vessels were lost on the way, but the
  7. Victoria arrived back in Spain in Sept 1522
  8. under Cano. Magellan himself did not complete
  9. the voyage, as he died in the Philippines in
  10. 1521. The first English circumnavigator was
  11. Drake in 1577-80 in the Golden Hind.
