- Sailing around the world. The first ship to
- sail around the world was the Victoria, one
- of the Spanish squadron of five vessels that
- sailed from Seville in Aug 1519 under the
- Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan. Four
- vessels were lost on the way, but the
- Victoria arrived back in Spain in Sept 1522
- under Cano. Magellan himself did not complete
- the voyage, as he died in the Philippines in
- 1521. The first English circumnavigator was
- Drake in 1577-80 in the Golden Hind.
