  2. computations, such as the abacus, slide rule,
  3. or computer. Probably the earliest known
  4. example is the abacus. Mechanical devices
  5. with sliding scales (similar to the slide
  6. rule) date back to ancient Greece. In 1642,
  7. the French mathematician Pascal built a
  8. mechanical adding machine, and in 1671 the
  9. German philosopher Leibniz produced a machine
  10. to perform multiplication. The first
  11. mechanical computer, the analytical engine,
  12. was designed by Charles Babbage in 1835. For
