  2.    Read Global Commands
  3.    --------------------

  5.    C)heck           Scans the current message area and displays the
  6.                     the message number of any message that are either
  7.                     TO or FROM you.  Messages FROM you are shown
  8.                     enclosed in [].
  9.  
  10.    S)can messages   Displays header information only (Subject, date,
  11.                     addressor, addressee, etc.) for all messages in
  12.                     the current message area starting with the last
  13.                     message that you have read or the specific message
  14.                     number you enter at the prompt.
  15.  
  16.    K)ill Message    This will delete a message that is presently being
  17.                     viewed.  If the message is "kill protected", you
  18.                     must be the addressor or addressee in order to
  19.                     kill the message.
  20.  
  21.    N)on-Stop        NON STOP mode.  This command will scroll through
  22.    Display          all messages in the current message area, starting
  23.                     with the last message you've read, without pausing
  24.                     after each one.  Great to use with your comm
  25.                     program's capture buffer if you want to save
  26.                     everything for later reading. CTRL-K will usually
  27.                     terminate NON STOP display.
  28.  
  29.    a(G)ain          Displays the last message you've read again.  You
  30.                     must have read a message during this session for
  31.                     this to function.
  32.  
  33.    E)nter Message   This will create a message entry in the currently
  34.                     selected message area.  You must identify who the
  35.                     message is to be sent to, the subject of the message
  36.                     and the security access level.  Available security
  37.                     access levels are:
  38.  
  39.                     P)rivate  message is only readable by addressor,
  40.                               addressee, and the SysOp
  41.  
  42.                     K)ill     public message which can only be
  43.                      Protect  deleted by the addressor, addressee,
  44.                               and the SysOp
  45.  
  46.                     N)one     public message and has no kill
  47.                               protection
  48.  
  49.    R)eply           Reply to the current message.  This will optionally
  50.                     retain the Subject of the current message and
  51.                     automatically address your reply to the user who
  52.                     posted the message you are replying to.
  53.  
  54.    T)hread          Displays the message threading sub-menu. Threading
  55.                     allows you to read through the current message
  56.                     area based on certain criteria.  A "thread" is a
  57.                     set of messages that are all tied together, ie.
  58.                     they started from a certain message and are all
  59.                     replies to either the ORIGINAL message or
  60.                     subsequent replies. The Thread sub-menu contains
  61.                     the following options:
  62.  
  63.                       Current topical thread: None
  64.                       Current textual thread: None
  65.                       Current address thread: None
  66.                       Current read direction: Forward
  67.  
  68.                       1.  Define a new topical thread.
  69.                       2.  Clear the topical thread.
  70.  
  71.                       3.  Define a new textual thread.
  72.                       4.  Clear the textual thread.
  73.  
  74.                       5.  Define a new address thread.
  75.                       6.  Clear the address thread.
  76.  
  77.                       7.  Reverse the reading direction.
  78.  
  79.                       Q.  Quit this menu.

  84.                       Thread commands operate as follows:
  85.  
  86.                       1.  Define a new topical thread:
  87.  
  88.                           Allows you to enter a specific topic, or
  89.                           subject, thread value. For example, if you
  90.                           are reading a message and want to read the
  91.                           rest of the messages in the current area
  92.                           containing the same SUBJECT heading, you
  93.                           would use this command to do so. If the
  94.                           original message had a subject heading of
  95.                           "OS/2", you would enter "OS/2" as the
  96.                           Topical Thread. When you return to the
  97.                           message sub-menu, ONLY messages that contain
  98.                           the SUBJECT heading of "OS/2" would be
  99.                           displayed on any further reading.

  101.                       2.  Clear the topical thread:
  102.  
  103.                           Clears the current TOPICAL THREAD. If you
  104.                           have previously set a topical thread, and
  105.                           you want to resume "normal" message reading,
  106.                           use this command to clear the currently
  107.                           stored TOPICAL THREAD. Upon your return to
  108.                           the message sub-menu, "normal" reading
  109.                           operations will be restored.

  111.                       3.  Define a new textual thread:
  112.  
  113.                           This command works the same as the TOPICAL
  114.                           THREAD, but instead of searching the MESSAGE
  115.                           HEADER information it searches the actual
  116.                           TEXT of the messages in the current area.
  117.                           For example, if you wanted to ONLY read
  118.                           messages in the current message area that
  119.                           contained the word "WINDOWS", you would
  120.                           enter "WINDOWS" as the TEXTUAL THREAD. Upon
  121.                           your return to the message sub-menu, ONLY
  122.                           those messages that contain the word
  123.                           "WINDOWS" in their text will be displayed on
  124.                           any read functions. A VERY handy command.

  126.                       4.  Clear the textual thread:
  127.  
  128.                           Clears the current TEXTUAL THREAD. If you
  129.                           have previously set a textual thread, and
  130.                           you want to resume "normal" message reading,
  131.                           use this command to clear the currently
  132.                           stored TEXTUAL THREAD. Upon your return to
  133.                           the message sub-menu, "normal" reading
  134.                           operations will be restored.

  136.                       5.  Define a new address thread:
  137.  
  138.                           The same as the topical thread command, but
  139.                           instead allows you to display only those
  140.                           messages to or from a certain USER. For
  141.                           example, if you are reading a message from
  142.                           John Doe and want to read the rest of the
  143.                           messages that contain the same ADDRESS
  144.                           heading, you would use this command to do
  145.                           so. If the original message had an ADDRESS
  146.                           heading of "JOHN DOE", you would enter "JOHN
  147.                           DOE" as the ADDRESS Thread. When you return
  148.                           to the message sub-menu, ONLY those messages
  149.                           that contain the ADDRESS heading of "JOHN
  150.                           DOE" in either the TO: or FROM: fields would
  151.                           be displayed on any further reading.

  153.                       6.  Clear the address thread:
  154.  
  155.                           Clears the current ADDRESS THREAD. If you
  156.                           have previously set a textual thread, and
  157.                           you want to resume "normal" message reading,
  158.                           use this command to clear the currently
  159.                           stored ADDRESS THREAD. Upon your return to
  160.                           the message sub-menu, "normal" reading
  161.                           operations will be restored.

  163.                       7.  Reverse the reading direction:
  164.  
  165.                           Allows you to read through the current
  166.                           message area in reverse. Any other Thread
  167.                           options that are active remain in effect.
  168.                           i.e hitting the [ENTER] key will show the
  169.                           previous message instead of the next
  170.                           message.

  172.                       Q.  Quit this menu:
  173.  
  174.                           Quits the Thread Options sub-menu and
  175.                           returns you to the message sub-menu.
  176.  
  177.    Msg(#)           Displays a specific message number. If you wanted
  178.                     message number 500 in the current message area,
  179.                     merely enter "500" at the message sub-menu prompt
  180.                     and that particular message will be displayed for
  181.                     you.
  182.  
  183.    M)ove            Allows you to move a message to an alternate
  184.                     message area and optionally add additional comments to that
  185.                     message.  This function is controlled by your
  186.                     access level, and you may not have the appropriate
  187.                     access to use this function.
  188.  
  189.    Q)uit            Terminates the read global command and returns you to
  190.                     the main system menu.

  193.    ne(X)t           Read Global  ONLY steps you through the message
  194.                     areas that you have JOINED via the "A" command
  195.                     (Area Change). Using the "X" command from the
  196.                     Read Global  sub-menu  moves  you  forward  to the
  197.                     next joined message area.
  198.  
  199.    [RETURN]         Pressing ENTER at the message sum-menu prompt will
  200.                     automatically display the next message in the
  201.                     current message area.  You do not have to enter the
  202.                     actual message number if you are reading forward
  203.                     or backwards through the messages in sequential
  204.                     order...only if you wish to jump to a particular
  205.                     message.
