This is an entry level word processor. It also can be used as a
letter processor as it has a very powerful print utility. It writes an
ascii (text) file i.e. a file with no extra characters in it.
There are several companies using MINIWORD as their only word processor!
It's easy to use... almost like using a typewriter except you have
many of the advantages of a word processor. It also writes an ascii
text file.. that is, there are no 'control characters' in the file so
you can use this to edit BBS text files, batch files or program files.
(It is recommended, however, that for extensive editing of program
files, you choose a programming editor like QEDIT).
If you wish to edit a program file, set the width of the file to 120
or so to effectively disconnect the word wrap.
On the first menu, you either touch ENTER on the first option "NEW
FILE" or move the lightbar to the second option, "Load a file". You
can load a file you edited from any directory on your hard drive (or
on another drive) by changing the PATH option (last option on the
opening menu). It defaults to a directory called "C:\MINIWORD".
If you are loading a file, you will see a window of the directory you
have chosen at the PATH prompt showing the files you can load. For
more files, press the PgDn key or press the PgUp key. Some users have
'lost their files' because they didn't know that if the directory is
larger than can be shown in the window, they must press the PgDn or
PgUp to see their files.
After you have selected the file you wish to edit either by entering a
NEW FILENAME or choosing one from the disk, then you move the lightbar
to "Edit your file" and touch ENTER (or touch the key, "E" and it will
act as a hotkey i.e. you don't have to touch ENTER). That will put
you into the editing screen. You can move up and down with the arrow
keys. You don't have to touch ENTER at the end of a line as the words
will automatically go to the next line. (unless you are editing a BAT
file or program and you WANT to touch ENTER at the end of a line).
There are alot of other things you can do. Just press the Function
KEY, F1 and it will show you a HELP file of all the things you can do
in the editor.
When you are ready to exit, you can hit F2 (function key) and it will
save your file to disk for you on the directory specified on the path
you set on the opening screen. It pops a box which says "Change File
Name". Generally, you want to say "no" <Enter "N">. But this will
come in handy for doing lots of letters where you only change a few
things - you can load in one letter and save it out as another letter.
YOU MUST SAVE IT in order to print it to the printer.
If you touch ESCape (the Escape key) in the editor, it will ask you if
you wish to 'SAVE your changes'. If you wish to save the file to disk,
answer "Y" to this and then it will ask you if you wish to change the
file name etc. If you answer "N" to this, it will NOT SAVE YOUR FILE
to the disk! Sometimes you don't wish to save the file.
If you really mess up a previously saved file, you will be glad to
know that MINIWORD makes a backup file of the old version. So you can
load in this file and continue. This file has a "BAK" extension.
That is, if you have a file you edited called "MYTEXT.DOC" and you
load it in from the disk and really mess it up and want to start your
editing over but you saved it already, you can load in a file called
"MYTEXT.BAK" which will be the last version before you started editing
it (and saved it). These "BAK" files can be erased from DOS but they
DO come in handy sometimes, I have found. Usually, if you don't need
them right away, you won't need them. See DOS COMMANDS to find out
how to erase them. I may put in a DELETE FILE feature in the next
version of MINIWORD (another great reason to register so you can be
sure of getting YOUR free copy!).
I put MINIWORD on my DOS directory (I have a path set to DOS) and that
way I can type in MINIWORD from any place on the hard drive and it
will load the program.
MINIWORD will automatically detect if you have a color system and set
the colors accordingly. If you have a laptop computer, however, this
automatic detection will tell MINIWORD that your computer is in color
and most laptops require black and white colors to look good. So, if
you have a laptop, load MINIWORD by typing:
MINIWORD L
at the DOS prompt. the "L" will tell MINIWORD to display the colors
to look good on a laptop.
MINIWORD for the laptop will default to the A:\ drive. If you have a
hard drive and want it to default to the MINIWORD directory, load the
program as follows:
MINIWORD L 1
The second parameter will force it to default to the MINIWORD directory.
There are help files on every screen and with the help files you
should have no problems in using MINIWORD. I think you will find it
enjoyable as it's so simple to use. MINIWORD is running in many
places and it's not unusual to see a person who has never used a word
processor before, jump into MINIWORD and be word processing in about
10 minutes!
PRINTING from MINIWORD is pretty straight forward. You can set the
length of the page (like it would be about 40-50 lines for
stationary). The "BACK OF PAGE" option is for when you are doing
letters and you wish print on the front and back of each page. If you
set this option on, it will print "Please turn over" on the bottom of
each ODD Numbered Page (front of page).
You can specify a header by typing in something in the TITLE line.
Otherwise, MINIWORD will put the date on the first page of your
document and a page number on each successive page.
DOS 6:
For DOS 6, ADD this on a separate line in your autoexec.bat or type
in at the DOS prompt:
SET CLIPPER=E0
