What is DOOMED?
---------------
What do you mean? What is it like to be doomed? Maybe I should play Doom
to find out.
This is DOOMED. It is? I would feel terrible to be doomed.
Sorry about the puns, but DOOMED is a DOOM saved game editor. Probably
the best so far, and it will get better. Yes, that's right, this is
Arun "Mr. Saved Game Editor" Bhalla, having also put out PRINCED and CIVED,
for Prince of Persia & Civilization, respectively. I can almost contend
that I can make a cheat for any game, as long as the data files are not
encoded or uses a checksum in such a way that only a computer could do it.
(Send me your requests. If I have the game, I could attempt a cheat for it.)
Why is it DOOMED?
-----------------
In following the xxxED series (saved game editors), DOOM's saved game editor
thus becomes DOOMED. This series is maintained by Arun Bhalla Software
(that's me!), the company being formed after AUTORND ( a nifty batch file
randomization program, pretty handy for people who like random processes,
such as at startups, etc).
Upon seeing other DOOM saved game editors (DOOMEDIT v.3.0 & DOOM Cheat by
Joe Snow), I decided that 1) they were not compatible with DOOM v.1.1,
2) they were not really neat enough/user-friendly, or 3) this isn't just
comprehensive enough. So I created DOOMED, made in a little over day
or day and a half. After hacking through my DOOM saved games, and a lot of
guesswork, I created DOOMED, shoved pretty much into the CIVED engine, just
repainted. After that, I decided that Id Software occasionally screwed up
the format, but oh well... it's their format, and I'm not one to complain.
I should probably get started on the instructions <it's simple>
How to be DOOMED:
-----------------
After that lengthy opening screen, which you'll probably hardly scan through,
I will remind you to _make backups_, unless you like to live risks. I
can say that DOOMED shouldn't have a problem with the saved game, but DOOM
might dislike having an exceedingly high value for your ammo or health,
but, of course, you could always re-modify the saved game with DOOMED instead
of copying doomsav0.bak to doomsav0.dsg. It's really your choice.
Anyhow, on the second screen, just enter the saved game number that you want
to use (0-5 in accordance with DOOM). Yes, you can even see the descriptions!
The third screen will be known as the status screen. You will notice the
filename of the saved game, description, and version number [1.0 or 1.1].
Below is the level you're on, the health you have, the armor you have,
the keys you have, the weapons you have, the ammo you have, and the modes/
suits you have activated, with the time left.
Note that the keys are color-coded, so if you see a blue-colored text as
"Access card", it means you have a blue access card. Simple, isn't it.
Note that time is in minutes, everywhere.
The next screen is the menu screen.
You can choose to:
0) abort all changes and exit
1) edit the health, armor, difficulty level, and saved game
description <- handy!
2) edit the keys you have
3) edit the weapons you have
4) edit the ammo for each weapon, along with the maximum
5) edit the suits/modes you have, and the time left for each
6) save all changes and exit
7) quickly "max out" on everything and exit
(which is very handy when you want everything)
In most cases, when the program requires that you enter a single-digit
number (as is the case with the keys or weapons or menus), you do not
need to press the Enter key. Generally, you can press a number and wait
a second. If it doesn't do anything, you'll need to press Enter. If it does
do something, you don't need to press Enter.
On each screen, there will be some notes about what you are about to edit,
so you might want to read that. You can always press 0 to go back to the
previous screen.
What's next?:
-------------
Ok, so I didn't need that much for instructions. I tried to make an editor
that was user-friendly and less computerish and yet powerful enough for
people to fool around with the numbers. The numbers are mostly long integers
with a maximum at a little over 4 billion (4,294,967,295) just for your
sake. Fool around a bit... however, keep in mind that sometimes editing
produces weird results, mostly because of the way DOOM was programmed.
Soon I'll probably fix-up DOOMED to popup & pull-down menus and other sorts
of things. Something to look forward to.
What's the catch?
-----------------
Officially this is shareware. However, in the spirit of DOOM (and Christmas),
if you use this program, you MUST send me a postcard (cardware) :)
I will accept donations (usually monetary), and donations of $8 or more will
result in you receiving a registered, personalized copy from of DOOMED, plus
more incentives, such as a discount off my other saved game editors, and a
discount off my future saved game editor for a whole bunch of shareware games.
Plus a whole slew of information about DOOM.
For donations of $8 or more, please print out and mail/fax REGISTER.FRM.
I do offer technical support for DOOMED right now...
call (708) 961-5678 during weekends & holidays
or (708) 907-5605 during weekdays
or mail me at abhalla@imsa.edu or abhalla@aol.com.
Thanks for trying DOOMED out, and call Shadows in the Rain BBS, the main
distribution site for DOOMED v.0.90! (call 708-305-3491). You can even
mail me...send all mail for me to "WOLF" on that BBS. Please send me any
questions, comments, or concerns.
Greetings to Shane, Phil D. (if this ever gets to you), David W., people at
IMSA, Vijay Kapoor (if this ever gets to you), Jay Wilbur & the rest of
Id Software, Ryan P., and other people I know, but I didn't put down here.
Happy holidays, happy new year, and happy DOOMING!
