- UPDATE NOTES 3-20-94
-
- Reference Management System has been expanded and improved since
- first released as RSX-2.4a in 1989.
-
- The current version is RMS-III, 3.2b. Since version 2.4f (then
- called RSX), the data files have not been changed in any manner;
- they are completely forward and backward compatible.
-
- NOTE: If you have installed a prior version of the TSX utility,
- you must re-install it with installation of RMS-III, 3.2b.
-
- >> Mismatching of RMS-III and TSX versions will cause problems. <<
-
- Corrections and improvements are often the result of user feedback,
- so please forward ANY comments. Thanks.

- Highlights of recent changes:
-
- Recent changes are documented in the file WHATSNEW.DOC. If you have
- used previous versions, you should review the change highlights,
- to help you fully utilize its improvements and new features. You
- should especially appreciate the robustness & stability of the new
- version which is paticularly evident with respect to use of the ESC
- key to exit or cancel operations. Also, there is now much more
- on-line help with the F1 key. The setup operations (colors,
- preferences, and paths) are completely revised. There is a new
- rapid scan record dislpay, changes in search and utility operations,
- and new WordPerfect Macros. The WHATSNEW.DOC file has more details.

-
- Known Problems/Limitations:
-
- 1. Occurrence of square bracket characters, [], in the Abstract/Memo
- field can sometimes cause problems. Try to avoid their use.
-
- 2. The generation of Topical Lists/Indexes can be very slow if your
- machine is slow and/or DOS-SHARE is loaded so that you must
- start RMS without the `-ns' parameter (see manual).
-
- 3. References with both authors and editors can be awkward to match
- to some publication format requirements. In RMS-III, editors names
- are usually cited in the SOURCE entry (with `Ed. by' notation).
- This may require manual post-processing in your word processor.
-
- 4. Handling of accented characters can present problems. Characters
- é, ô, à, ü, etc. can be entered in RMS-III records. BUT, they must
- also be used in searches. ALSO, many printers are not set up for
- them and errors will result. Check your system before using them.
-
- 5. Two situations may cause FATAL ERRORS. One occurs during attempts
- to write to a disk that is full - some disk-writes are preceeded
- by disk-space checks, but some are not! The other error occurs
- when trying to use an index file (.NDX) that does not match the
- database file (.DBF). (This may not be fatal if the operation is
- stopped and the index deactivated or updated.)
-
- 6. RMS-III does not yet support use of a mouse.
