FAMILY TREE JOURNAL TEXT EDITOR
Data entry with the editor defaults to insert mode. You may
move the cursor with the <LEFT-ARROW> and <RIGHT-ARROW> keys
to any place on the line without disturbing anything.
The <HOME> and <END> keys move the cursor to the beginning
or end of the current line if it is not already at that
respective position.
Typing the <HOME> or <END> keys when the cursor is already
at the beginning or the end of the line will move to the
first or last line on the screen.
If the cursor is positioned at the first character of the
first line, the <HOME> key will display the first screen in
the file.
If the cursor is at the last character of the last line, the
<END> key will display the last screen in the file.
Typed characters will be inserted into the text and all
characters to the right of the cursor will shift towards the
end of the line. Words at the end of the line will wrap down
to the next line.
The <DELETE> key will erase the character under the cursor
and the <INSERT> key toggle the mode from insert to over-
write mode.
You may enter foreign characters by holding the ALT key
while typing the decimal code (IBM extended ASCII) for the
character. This will work for most of the extended charac-
ters except those between the values 200 and 219 (some line
drawing characters).
The <UP-ARROW> and <DOWN-ARROW> keys will scroll the cursor
up and down.
The <PAGE-UP> and <PAGE-DOWN> keys will display the pre-
vious or next page of text, except that you will not be able
to go forward past the end of text.
FUNCTION KEYS
F1 HELP - Displays help information.
F2 NAMES - Display and edit your name list.
F3 FILE - Read or import files, biographies and references.
F4 CENTER - Center the text on the current line.
F5 BOLD - Toggles the bold text mode.
F6 ITALIC - Toggles the italic mode.
F7 UNDRLN - Toggles the underline mode.
F8 SAVE - Saves the information.
F9 SOURCE - Create or cite sources.
F10 PRINT - Prints the file in the buffer.
The <ESC> key will exit the editor.
Bold, italic and underlined modes are indicated by the color
of the text on the screen. These modes cannot extend beyond
the end of the line so the editor will automatically turn
those modes off if the line extends too far.
At the bottom of the editor screen are message windows that
will show status. The window on the right will show a
description of hidden characters under the cursor. This is
useful when you want to delete a bold, italic or underline
mode control character or delete the return at the end of
the line to join two lines together.
NOTE: When any file is saved, the SOFT RETURN's are con-
verted to HARD RETURNS's. This will make the file compatible
with DOS functions such as TYPE, EDLIN, EDIT etc.
