  16.     Before you can use the  CHARACTERS CREATION COMPATIBLE AD&D
  17. program you  have to  run the  setup program  from the  Windows
  18. environment so as to ensure  its proper work  on your computer.
  19. You can not just copy  the files  from the  CHARACTERS CREATION
  20. COMPATIBLE AD&D  disk on to  your hard disk.  The files  on the
  21. distributed disk  are packed in a special way  to save space on
  22. the disk. The setup program unpacks those files and builds them
  23. on your working disk.
  24.  
  25.     1.  If the  computer prompts  you from  the DOS,  go to the
  26.         Windows environment by typing  "WIN"  then pressing the
  27.         "Enter" key.
  28.  
  29.     2.  Activate the window of the "Program Manager".
  30.  
  31.     3.  Select the  "File" menu  from  the  "Program  Manager",
  32.         then select "Run". This will open the "Run" dialog box.
  33.  
  34.         Insert the  CHARACTERS CREATION COMPATIBLE AD&D disk in
  35.         your floppy drive.  Type in the dialog box  the command
  36.         that will run the setup program:
  37.  
  38.         If you insert your floppy disk in the Drive "A",  type:
  39.         "A:SETUP".
  40.         If you insert your floppy disk in the Drive "B",  type:
  41.         "B:SETUP".
  42.  
  43.         The "Run Minimized" box must not be selected. If it is,
  44.         then unselect it by clicking it.
  45.         Next  click the  "OK"  command  button  (or  press  the
  46.         "Enter" key).
  47.  
  48.         N.B. :  The procedure of setup may be blocked by one of
  49.                 programs present  on your hard disk.  The  case
  50.                 goes usually for the ver.dll  (or ver.dl) file,
  51.                 which you  can find  in the  Windows directory.
  52.                 You just  have to  delete  it.  Then,  run  the
  53.                 procedure of setup again.
  54.  
  55.     4.  After  a  while a  dialog  box  will  prompt  you  into
  56.         chosen your language. Select it and then click the "OK"
  57.         command button (or press the "Enter" key).
  58.  
  59.     5.  Then you will  be prompted  by a dialog box  to specify
  60.         the  location where  you want your  CHARACTERS CREATION
  61.         COMPATIBLE AD&D files to be placed. It will suggest you
  62.         a drive and a directory: "C:\CHARACRE".
  63.  
  64.         If  you  want   to  install  the   CHARACTERS  CREATION
  65.         COMPATIBLE AD&D  program files on a  different drive or
  66.         directory,  just click  to the right  of the characters
  67.         you want to change to place the cursor,  backspace over
  68.         the ones you want to  erase,  and then type  in the new
  69.         designation.

  71.     6.  The  setup  program  unpacks  the  necessary  files and
  72.         places them into  the destination directory.  While the
  73.         setup program  is running,  the status of the operation
  74.         is progressively displayed.  If the CHARACTERS CREATION
  75.         COMPATIBLE AD&D software is constitued by more than one
  76.         floppy  disk,  you will  be requested  to  insert  each
  77.         floppy disk during the unpacking operation.
  78.  
  79.         N.B. :  The procedure of setup  may be blocked  at this
  80.                 stage. Some computers fail to run correctly the
  81.                 setup progam from the "program manager".  Then,
  82.                 run the setup program from the "file manager".

  84.     7.  The setup  program  automatically  builds a  CHARACTERS
  85.         CREATION  COMPATIBLE AD&D  icon  and  adds  it to  your
  86.         program manager.
  87.  
  88.     8.  The setup program notifies you when the installation is
  89.         completed.

  94.            SOLUTION   TO   UNCOMPLETE   INSTALLATION

  98. If the setup program  can not complete  the installation of the
  99. software, you must install it manually.
  100.  
  101.     1.  Insert the disk in the floppy drive.
  102.  
  103.     2.  Go to  DOS.  If  you are  in the  windows  environment,
  104.         activate the window of the  "Program  Manager".  Select
  105.         the "File" menu from the "Program Manager", then select
  106.         "Exit  Windows".   Quit  the  windows   environment  by
  107.         clicking the  "OK"  command button  (or by pressing the
  108.         "Enter" key).
  109.  
  110.     3.  When the computer prompts you,  select your destination
  111.         drive by typing its letter followed by  ":",  and press
  112.         the "Enter" key. For example, "C: or "D:".
  113.  
  114.     4.  Go to the root  directory by typing  "CD\",  then press
  115.         the "Enter" key.
  116.  
  117.     5.  Create the destination directory with the  "MkDir"  DOS
  118.         command (abbreviation: MD).  Type "MD " followed by the
  119.         name of the directory,  and press the "Enter" key.  For
  120.         example, "MD CHARACRE".
  121.  
  122.     6.  Now go to the newly created directory.  You can move to
  123.         any   directory   using   the   "ChDir"   DOS   command
  124.         (abbreviation: CD).  Type "CD " followed by the name of
  125.         this  directory,  then  press  the  "Enter"  key.   For
  126.         example, "CD CHARACRE".

  128.     7.  Unpack  the files  of the  program.  You  must  use the
  129.         EXPAND.EXE program supplied with  the software package.
  130.         Type the following commands, then press the "Enter" key
  131.         after each of them:

  133.           "A:EXPAND A:CREPERSO.EX_ C:\CHARACRE\CHARACRE.EXE"
  134.           "A:EXPAND A:CREPERSO.HL_ C:\CHARACRE\CHARACRE.HLP"
  135.           "A:EXPAND A:CREPERSO.RE_ C:\CHARACRE\CHARACRE.REL"
  136.           "A:EXPAND A:DRAGON1.RE_  C:\CHARACRE\DRAGON1.REL"
  137.  
  138.           "A:EXPAND A:COMMDLG.DL_  C:\CHARACRE\COMMDLG.DLL"
  139.           "A:EXPAND A:MSAFINX.DL_  C:\CHARACRE\MSAFINX.DLL"
  140.           "A:EXPAND A:SETUPKIT.DL_ C:\CHARACRE\SETUPKIT.DLL"

  148.         NOTES: * If your  floppy drive  is the drive  "B",  you
  149.                  must replace the "A:" by "B:" in the commands.
  150.                * In the above commands, "C:" corresponds to the
  151.                  destination  drive.   If  you  have  chosen  a
  152.                  different drive, replace it by yours.
  153.                * In    the   above    commands,    "\CHARACRE\"
  154.                  corresponds  to the  name of  the  destination
  155.                  directory. If yours is a different one, use it
  156.                  in place of indicated directory. Do not forget
  157.                  to type the first backslash  after the name of
  158.                  the destination drive,  and the last backslash
  159.                  just before the name of each file.

  161.     8.  Next,  copy the documentation files  on the destination
  162.         disk. Type the DOS command "COPY A:*.TXT" and press the
  163.         "Enter" key.
  164.  
  165.         NOTE: If your floppy drive is the drive  "B",  you must
  166.               replace the "A:" by a "B:" in the command.
  167.  
  168.     9.  Return  to the  Windows  environment  by  typing  "WIN"
  169.         then press the "Enter" key.
  170.  
  171.    10.  Activate the window of the "Program Manager".
  172.  
  173.    11.  Select the "File" menu from the "Program Manager", then
  174.         select "New". This will open the "New" dialog box.  Add
  175.         a new group of programs  by clicking  the corresponding
  176.         option.   Name  the  group  of  programs   ("CHARACTERS
  177.         CREATION   COMPATIBLE  AD&D")    and  the   group  file
  178.         ("CHARACRE.GRP"),  and  then  click  the  "OK"  command
  179.         button (or press the "Enter" key).

  181.    12.  Select the "File" menu from the "Program Manager", then
  182.         select  "New" again.  This will open  the "New"  dialog
  183.         box.  Add a new program by selecting the "Program Item"
  184.         option,  and then  click the  "OK"  command button  (or
  185.         press the  "Enter"  key).  Click the  "Search"  command
  186.         button and choose the  CHARACRE.EXE  program.  Name the
  187.         program  ("CHARACTERS CREATION  COMPATIBLE  AD&D")  and
  188.         then  click the  "OK"  command  button  (or  press  the
  189.         "Enter" key).

  191.    13.  The installation is now completed.
