TankedUp
--------
TankedUp is a one player game of tank combat.
Note: TankedUp has been tested on a basic 2Mb A1200, a 6Mb A1200
and a 6Mb 50 MHz 030 A1200, I don`t think it`ll run very well on
a slower configuration. Hard drive owners can install TankedUp by
dragging it`s draw into their preferred directory - the support
files (graphics, sound effects etc.) should be present for the
programs not to cause a crash. TankedUp is PAL only.
A Quick Run Down of the Game
----------------------------
For whatever reason (I`m sure it`s a good one), you are driving
a rocket firing tank around in a maze like arena.
Also for some reason the said arena is populated by similarly
equipped enemies who are hell bent on destroying you (Yup, same
old scenario).
Your mission is either to destroy all the enemy or escape from
the level.
Shortly after the game begins, enemy tanks are added to the arena
by means of teleportation devices and start hunting you down.
Every level has a maximum simultaneous number of tanks in the
game at one time (set by the skill level).
every time you kill some baddy another one will be teleported in
until all the tanks (1-50) in the level are used up.
Each rocket impact causes 1 armour point of dammage. Enemy tanks
take four rocket hits to destroy.
You can drive through automatic doors(sometimes they jam), and
you can pick up rocket packs and armour boosts to refresh your
depleted supplies.
Pickups can contain 12 armour points or 12 rockets respective
of type.
The player can accumulate up to 50 armour points and carry a
maximum of 50 rockets.
Any surplus points in a pickup will be wasted - tactical use is
recomended.
Each level has-
Initial player values for Armour and No. of Rockets.
A limited number of pickups.
A built in time limit.
A total number of baddies which can appear.
(this is not the same as the maximum simultaneous no.
of baddies which is set by the skill level.)
The guages under the scanner represent (L to R) armour (0-50),
rockets (0-50), time units (0-99) and enemy remaining (0-50).
Controls
--------
Moving around:
Locating the mouse pointer on the game area and pressing the left
mouse button will create a `Move-to-Point` represented by a little
black crosshair - your tank will immediatly try to move to this
point. If you bump a wall or an enemy tank you will stop and the
Move-to-Point will dissappear until you left-click again.
Firing:
Pressing the right mouse button on the game will fire a rocket to
the mouse pointer unless you`re out of rockets in which case you`d
better find a rocket pack lying around somewhere.
Pausing and accessing the map:
Pressing the map button will pause the game and display a map of the
level. The map gives useful information such as the players position
and the location of pickups, doors and escape teleporters.
The Game Window
---------------
Upon loading TankedUp displays the game window on the workbench. Most
of it`s functions should be self explanetary except that you can`t
play a game if no level is currently loaded.
High scores must be entered on the high score table before you can
progress to another game. Pressing the Save Scores button will
record the current score table to the map if it has been altered
since the last save.
The three skill levels represent the maximum number of tanks that are
simultaneously present in the game at one time.
Easy = 4
Medium = 6
Hard = 8
The highest skill level available will depend on the total number of
baddies for that level if less than 8. Bear in mind that the chosen
skill level and playing speed will influence your game score.
The Missions
------------
Seek and Destroy
----------------
Couldn`t be simpler - kill all enemy tanks in the level before they
kill you or you run out of time.
Escape
------
Avoid or kill enemy tanks until you drive onto an Escape Teleporter
whereupon you will be whisked away to a high score hopefully.
Tip: use the map to locate an escape teleporter - it`s a yellow
square. On screen they look like those the enemy use except the`re
marked with an `E`.
Playing Tips
------------
Move away from your opponent while firing upon them
---------------------------------------------------
It`ll run into your rocket impacts if you aim slightly ahead of it.
This is a great tactic when your enemy is just out of range, you
can actually hit it while it`s following you from just offscreen.
Keep moving
-----------
Enemy fire is less accurate the greater the distance - keep moving
away from it.
Keep walls between you and as many tanks as possible
----------------------------------------------------
This limits the number of tanks who have line of sight with you and
allows you to concentrate on one or two enemy at a time.
Reverse direction suddenly when fired at
----------------------------------------
This is a tricky manouvre which won`t work at close range.
If you are moving the enemy will aim ahead of you so that their rockets
will impact at the right time. A quick direction change can foil one or
two hits.
Use the Scanner
---------------
This can help you avoid group attacks, and you can locate lone targets
for easy prey.
Use the Map
-----------
Especially if you are low on Armour/Rockets at the start of the Game.
Plan a route of the nearest pickups and survive a little longer.
Known Bugs/Glitches
-------------------
If you kill a tank in an open doorway the door will close and usually
jam - and sometimes stay jammed for one or two games afterwards. I`ve
yet to find out why this is happening so i`m calling it a game feature.
And Finally
-----------
TankedUp is programmed in Blitz Basic 2 (Great Programming language!)
and is based on some old AMOS code that I was messing around with.
Thanks go to Mr G.Weetman for the portrait photography.
