  12.   INTRODUCTION
  13.  
  14.     "Quote For The Day" is a novelty program intended to provide amusement
  15.     and entertainment. When run the screen clears and the user is presented
  16.     with a quote from someone famous. The quotes range from nonsensical and
  17.     utterly useless, to providing a serious outlook on life. I have tried to
  18.     maintain a balance between funny and serious quotes, but they should all
  19.     provide you with a few moments pleasure. Some will make you chuckle, some
  20.     may make you laugh, others will make you nod your head in agreement, and
  21.     some may even enlighten you. Whilst compiling the program, I myself have
  22.     often been surprised at things certain people have said.
  23.  
  24.     Each quote is surrounded by a border of miniature pictures. These are
  25.     intended to provide you with some insight into the profession of that
  26.     particular person. Here are just a few examples :

  38.   PC REQUIREMENTS
  39.  
  40.     "Quote For The Day" has been designed to run on virtually any PC. It
  41.     requires very little free RAM to run, and only a very small portion of
  42.     hard disk space. It will run at any speed of PC processor, from a lowly
  43.     086 to a Pentium, and it can even be run from a floppy disk. The only
  44.     hang-up this program does have, is that you will need a VGA or better
  45.     monitor to run it. My apologies to those with CGA or EGA monitors.

  49.   INSTRUCTIONS
  50.  
  51.     Installing "Quote For The Day" is easy using the `install.bat` file
  52.     provided. Simply type `Install` followed by the drive letter of the disk
  53.     you wish to install to, at the `DOS` prompt. For example if your main
  54.     hard disk letter is `C:\`, you would type the following at the `DOS`
  55.     prompt :
  56.                               INSTALL C
  57.  
  58.     Note, there is no need to enter a colon after the hard drive letter.
  59.     `Install.bat` will create a new directory called `\QUOTE` on your hard
  60.     drive and copy "Quote For The Day" and it`s data files into it. To run
  61.     "Quote For The Day" at any time type the following :

  63.                               CD\QUOTE
  64.                               QUOTE

  66.     It occurred to me that it might be nice for "Quote For The Day" to come
  67.     on automatically when you switch your PC on, as a sort of welcoming
  68.     message to lighten your day a little. For this purpose I include the
  69.     file `Welcome.exe`. If you run this and follow the instructions on
  70.     screen you will be welcomed with a quote every time you boot up your
  71.     computer.

  73.     For those of you more technically advanced, and willing to risk playing
  74.     about, "Quote For The Day" can be run from anywhere on your hard drive
  75.     by typing `Quote`. Providing it has been installed correctly. Look for
  76.     the `PATH` line in your `Autoexec.bat` file and add the following to
  77.     the end of it :

  80.     Substitute the `C` for another letter if you have used a different hard
  81.     drive. If you don`t know what you`re doing, please don`t try this. I`d
  82.     hate to be held responsible.

  86.   WHAT IS SHAREWARE EXACTLY?
  87.  
  88.     "Quote For The Day" is shareware. For those unfamiliar with the shareware
  89.     concept, let me explode a few myths. Shareware isn`t simply free software
  90.     that some idiot sat at home developing with no intention of financial
  91.     gain. It isn`t necessarily always of poor quality and virtually useless
  92.     to all and sundry. Many of the shareware products currently being
  93.     released are of a standard to challenge commercial software. Such quality
  94.     work should not go unrewarded.
  95.  
  96.     If you`re bewildered about shareware, let me explain the concept. The
  97.     most popular buzz phrase used to describe it has always been
  98.     `try-before-you-buy` software. Shareware gives you an opportunity to try
  99.     out a piece of software before purchasing a copy. Nothing can be so
  100.     frustrating as buying a piece of shrink wrapped software off a shelf, then
  101.     taking it home to find it isn`t what you wanted or that it`s utterly
  102.     rubbish. Because shareware is provided free or at the cost of a disk, if
  103.     you find you don`t like it, you haven`t lost anything. And you certainly
  104.     don`t have to go back to the shop and try to get the assistant to take it
  105.     back or exchange it.

  107.     The question many people ask is, "Well if I`ve got a piece of shareware,
  108.     why should I bother registering it by sending money to the author? After
  109.     all, I`ve already got the program."
  110.  
  111.     The answer. When you register a piece of shareware you will often receive
  112.     free up-grades, printed manuals where needed, extra program features,
  113.     other shareware programs, bonus programs, and a letter of thanks from
  114.     the author. Not enough! What do you want? Blood?
  115.  
  116.     Shareware is also often favourably priced compared to shrink wrapped
  117.     commercial software. Without the added costs of advertising, packaging,
  118.     promotion, and middle men in the form of wholesalers and retailers, we
  119.     shareware authors can afford to drop the price a little. An advantage
  120.     for you the consumer.

  124.   REGISTERING "QUOTE FOR THE DAY"

  126.     Okay, the burning questions. How much does it cost to register "Quote For
  127.     The Day"? What do you get for your money? How do you go about getting it?

  129.   WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU REGISTER "QUOTE FOR THE DAY"?

  131.       Firstly, you`ll be sent a registered copy of the program containing
  132.       over 1500 quotes for you to enjoy. That`s about two quotes a day for
  133.       two years. Note, this shareware version contains only 300 quotes.

  135.       You`ll also be sent a list explaining what professions all the picture
  136.       surrounds refer to. In case there are any you`re unsure of.

  138.       As well as this, you`ll be sent shareware copies of all BOZZ Software
  139.       products available. The list is growing all the time. Keep a look
  140.       out for them.

  265.       shareware is priced at about the same cost as commercial shrink
  266.       wrapped software or higher. BOZZ Software will not do this. My prices
  267.       are based on cost, NOT simply what I think the market will stand.
