Women's Rights is divided into three parts: OVERVIEW, ISSUES and TIMELINE. You can choose any of these by clicking on its heading at the top of the screen, or by clicking on Tools on the bottom right of the screen, then selecting an icon from Main Menus.
OVERVIEW gives four options: Introduction, Women's Rights and Human Rights, Equality? and Turning the Tide.
There are 11 Issues, consisting of articles from The Times, each containing six to ten topics. For example, the ISSUE called The Workplace gives a choice of the following topics: Career mothers, Maternity, Glass ceiling, In a man's world, Unions, Industrial tribunals, Sexual harassment, Nineteenth century, Women's work and Unequal pay. Each topic has a summary, a list of article headlines, and thumbnail (miniaturised) pictures: click on a headline and the article appears in full; click on a thumbnail picture and it goes up to full size, with a caption. As you explore Womens Rights you can collect thumbnail pictures and articles in the Scrapbook, and make notes in the Notepad. All your work can be stored easily when you finish a session on Womens Rights, and you can go back in, later, at exactly the point you left off.
TIMELINE stretches from 1850 to 1995: click and drag the slider along the timeline and the years appear, complete with major events and headlines. Click on a headline and you can read the whole article. You can also reach the TIMELINE by clicking on the dates next to the headlines in each ISSUES topic.
Clicking on Tools calls up 12 buttons, each with a specific task, to help you operate your CD-ROM in the best way possible.

Copying text
To copy text open Tools and select Notepad. The Notepad will appear on the screen. Click on the article you want to copy, highlight the part you want and press <Command> <C> on a Macintosh, <Control> <C> on a PC. Now click back on the Notepad and press <Command> <V> on a Macintosh and <Controll> <V> on a PC. The text you highlighted will be pasted into your Notepad.
Copying to disk
Once you have placed an article in the Scrapbook you can save it to a floppy disk or the hard disk. You can then use the article in another application, such as a page layout or word processor program.
Issues
There are 11 Issues, each containing between six and ten topics. Within every topic there is a summary, a list of articles, and pictures. You can get to the Issues home page by choosing [Main menus] from Tools and then clicking on the Issues icon.
Main menus
Selecting Main menus from Tools displays icons of OVERVIEW, ISSUES and TIMELINE. Click once to change from one to the other.
Navigation
You can choose either OVERVIEW, ISSUES or TIMELINE by clicking once on its heading at the top of the first screen. Otherwise click Tools, select [Main menus] and click on the icon you require.
Finding your way around ISSUES:
o Click on an Issue and then select a topic. Each topic has a list of headlines which reveal articles when you click on them. To move to a different topic move the cursor over the top left of the screen and the list of topics appears. Then click on the topic you want. To go back to the Issues home page move the cursor over the top left again and click on the coloured topic heading at the top of the list.
o Clicking on the date next to an article headline takes you into the appropriate point of the Timeline.
o If you click on the [Links and comments] tab under each article a box appears indicating links to other parts of the CD-ROM; clicking on one will take you to it. In many cases a box also appears with comments on the article. To hide the comments click again on the tab.
In the Tools menu:
o Selecting [Main menus] from the Tools menu displays pictures of OVERVIEW, ISSUES and TIMELINE.
o Selecting [Previous] from Tools takes you straight back to the last screen you visited in Issues or Timeline.
o Selecting [Recent] from Tools displays images of the last twelve screens you visited in ISSUES. If you have visited the same screen more than once it will only appear once in the [Recent] box. Clicking on any of these images takes you back to that screen.
Notepad
Open the Notepad by clicking on it. You can keep Notepad open and make notes as you work, or save articles into it by using the copy and paste function. You can then save Notepad text to disk or print it, using the buttons at the top of the Notepad box.
Overview
OVERVIEW gives four options: INTRODUCTION, WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND HUMAN RIGHTS, EQUALITY? and TURNING THE TIDE. You can get to OVERVIEW by selecting [Main menus] from Tools and then clicking once on the
OVERVIEW picture.
o Click [skip introduction] on the bottom left of the screen if you want to interrupt and skip the INTRODUCTION.
o WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND HUMAN RIGHTS contains eight screens; you can move backwards and forwards through each by clicking on the arrows above the text.
o EQUALITY? contains six screens; each has icons which reveal quotations, spoken and on-screen, illustrating the text above. Click on the lightbulb on each screen for more information.
o TURNING THE TIDE runs through the decades from 1900 to the present. Click and drag the mouse on an outfit to dress the model and find out how women's lives have changed decade by decade.
Pasting text
You can copy article text by highlighting it and using <Command> <C> on a Macintosh, and <Control> <C> on a PC. You can then paste the text into the Notepad by using <Command> <V> on a Macintosh and <Control> <V> on a PC.
Previous
Click on Tools to go back to previous screens. If you click [Previous] while in Issues or Timeline you will go back to the last screen you viewed. If you click [Previous] while in Overview you will return to the Overview home page.
Print
The [Print] button in Scrapbook allows you to print out articles and pictures you have saved. In Notepad, clicking Print will print out your notes. You can also print out the Help information by going to Help (in Tools) and clicking [Print Help Text].
To print topic introductions, use the [Print screen] function.
Print screen
The [Print screen] button in Tools allows you to print the entire screen.
Quit
Clicking once on [Quit] in Tools takes you to the Women's Rights credits screen: click again to quit the CD-ROM.
Recent
Selecting [Recent] from Tools displays images of the last twelve screens you have visited within ISSUES. Screens only appear once in the Recent box, however many times you click on them. Clicking on any of these images in the box takes you back to its original place in Womens Rights.
Scrapbook
Use the Scrapbook for collecting articles and images. To place a thumbnail image in the Scrapbook, simply click and drag it to the Scrapbook tab (bottom right); to put articles in the Scrapbook, click the [Place in Scrapbook] bar and drag the thumbnail of the article to the Scrapbook tab. The tab turns orange when an image or article is dragged into it. Click on the Scrapbook tab to display the pictures or articles you have collected. Articles in the Scrapbook can be copied to the hard disk, and you can print or delete from the Scrapbook using the buttons at the bottom of its window.
Double-clicking a thumbnail image in the Scrapbook takes it up to full size. A single click highlights the thumbnail image, and the [Image taken from] box will show the Issue and topic it comes from. Click on this and you return to that point. Highlight with a single click the item you want to print or delete.
Search
Key in a word in the search box or scroll down through the index in the box on the left. Clicking on a word will give you a list of articles or biographies on that subject. Choosing one of the headlines and clicking the [Go to] button displays the article.
Sessions
When you save a session, your place within the CD-ROM and the contents of your Scrapbook and Notepad are all saved to one file which can be placed on your hard disk or a floppy disk. Click on [Save session] and a box appears. Select the destination and filename for your session file before saving it. You can load the session the next time you use the CD-ROM using [Load session] from Tools, and continue with your work.
Sound
Clicking the [Sound] button displays volume controls. Adjust the sound volume using the controls.
Timeline
The TIMELINE stretches from 1850 to 1995. Click and drag the slider at the bottom of the screen and events and headlines relating to a certain period appear. Click on a headline and the article appears. Some years contain brief biographies and photographs of major figures. You can also reach the TIMELINE by clicking on the dates next to article headlines.
Tools
Click on Tools and the Tools menu is revealed. The Notepad and the Scrapbook are visible all the time.
Topic home pages
Topic home pages contain a topic summary, a list of relevant article headlines, and pictures. Click on a headline and the article appears. Click on a thumbnail picture and it goes up to full size. The [Links and comments] tab displays links to other parts of the CD-ROM.
