In 1970 Germaine Greer published The Female Eunuch - 'the ultimate word in sexual freedom'. It quickly became a best seller. Greer wanted The Female Eunuch to be "part of the second feminist wave . . if it is not ridiculed or reviled, it will have failed of its intention." The book received so much publicity that Greer resigned her position as a lecturer at Warwick University to write and make lecture tours. In the late 1960's and early '70's Greer wrote for the underground press, and in 1970 was guest editor of the Female Energy issue of Oz (a radical underground magazine). Her controversial writing and statements have kept her well in the public eye. Life magazine even put her on the front cover with the line: "saucy feminist that even men like"! Germaine Greer continues to speak and write on women's issues - in the press, in her books and on television; and whilst her arguments may sometimes be controversial, she has always provoked thought and debate.
