1-1
PKWARE
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Together, PKZIP, and PKUNZIP or PKZMENU, the menu-driven version of
PKUNZIP can handle all of your file compression needs.
PKZIP is the program that compresses files. This shrinking process is
often referred to as data compression. Terms you will see during the
compressing process are Storing, Shrinking, and Imploding. PKZIP also
handles all file maintenance including adding and deleting files, as
well as reporting on technical information from within the compressed
file. PKUNZIP is the program that uncompresses or extracts compressed
files. In addition to extracting a complete ZIP file, it can
selectively release individual files, show files on the screen for fast
viewing, or print them out on a printer. PKZMENU is a menu driven
version of PKUNZIP. It is a quick and easy way to extract files from
ZIP files and provide you with a variety of additional functions. It
will display all of the ZIP files of a given directory and allow you to
view the contents of ZIP files. You can then tag the specific files
you want to work with. The pull down menus can be used to perform a
variety of tasks.
In summary, PKZMENU allows you to perform the following tasks:
- View ZIP file contents.
- Use the easy but powerful tagging options.
- Use easy-access pull down menus.
- Display technical information of ZIPPED files.
- Extract, test, view, or print ZIPPED files.
- Utilize the built-in FAST! extraction code.
- Sort displayed files in a variety of ways.
- Extract password protected files.
- Create DOS directories from within the program.
- Create PKZIP/PKUNZIP compatible list files.
PKZMENU also includes support for VGA 50 line, EGA 43 line and
Monochrome monitors. It includes mouse support. PKZMENU supports
networks, laptop computers, and is DESQView aware.
1-2
FILE COMPRESSION
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The term "compression" means to reduce in size. Computer file
compression refers to reducing files in size so that they take up less
storage space on disk. PKZIP will perform this reducing process quickly
and easily. The compressed files are then stored in a special file
called a ZIP file. PKZMENU can then be used to extract those files and
return them to their original operating format.
ZIP files have three distinct benefits:
1. They use less disk space than normal files. Storing files in
compressed form increases the life and storage availability of
your hard disk.
2. Many individual files can be compressed into a single ZIP file.
This makes file group identification, copying, and transporting
faster and easier.
3. Compressed files travel faster via modem which reduces
communication transmission and reception. Many BBS (computer
bulletin board services) use PKWARE files as their standard.
This enables the BBS to store more files and allows you to
transfer files faster and easier.
The following file compression terms are used throughout this manual.
FILE = The SINGLE name that identifies information on your floppy
disk or hard drive.
ZIP FILE = The file that holds file information that has been reduced
in size for better storage. It is sometimes called a compressed
file or a library file. A ZIP file can be made up of either one or
more files compressed and stored together under one file name.
FILE EXTRACTION = The process of recreating files that have been
previously compressed.
FILE COMPRESSION = The process of reducing a file's size. This is
sometimes referred to as data compression.

All of the files and subdirectories listed in the main display area
are located on this drive/directory. To change the current
drive/directory, use the Drive/directory option on the Misc menu.
Main Display Area = This is the largest area of the PKZMENU screen.
All of the ZIP files and subdirectories of the current
drive/directory are listed here. The default information displayed
includes the size of the displayed files along with the file time
and date. Only the files that you choose to be considered as ZIP
files will be displayed. The default is all files with a .ZIP
extension.
There are several options you can set to determine what will be
displayed in this area. To determine how the files will be sorted,
use the Sort menu. There are also several other display options that
can be set from the Setup menu. For detailed information on the
Setup - ZIP options, see Section 7.
Extract Directory = The drive/directory where you wish to locate any
files that you extract is displayed here. The default setting is
the current directory. To change the extract directory, use the

subdirectories) listed in the display area and the number of the
item where the cursor is currently located.
Tagged Files = This area displays the total number of files that have
been tagged for extraction.
Bytes Tagged = This area displays the total sum, in bytes, of the files
that have been tagged. This is the byte sum of the files in their
uncompressed state. This information is useful, for example, when
you are extracting files to a floppy disk and you need to make sure
there will be enough space on the disk to contain the files in their
uncompressed state.
MODE = The current mode of the program operation is displayed here.
Presently there is one mode available, Extract.

Arrow keys = The arrow keys are used to access the pop-up menus and to
move the bar cursor among the files in the file display area.
RightArrow and LeftArrow = The RightArrow and LeftArrow keys are used
to access the pop-up menus. When no menu is presently displayed,
pressing the RightArrow or LeftArrow key will bring up the last
menu that was displayed. The same item will be highlighted as
when the menu was last displayed. If you have not yet displayed a
menu in this work session, the Extract menu appears when you press
the RightArrow or LeftArrow key.
If a menu is already displayed when you press the RightArrow key, the
menu immediately to the right will be displayed. If you press the
LeftArrow key, the menu immediately to the left will be displayed.
The cursor will always be located on the menu item where it was
positioned when you last displayed the menu. There is also a
"wrap-around" function in effect. When the Extract menu is up,
pressing the LeftArrow key will bring up the Exit menu; and when the
Exit menu is up, pressing the RightArrow key will bring up the
Extract menu.
UpArrow and DownArrow = The UpArrow and DownArrow keys will move the
bar cursor among the files in the file display area, and among the
options in the menus.
Pressing the UpArrow key will move the cursor one file at a time toward
the top of the screen. Pressing the DownArrow key will move the cursor
one file at a time toward the end of the display listing. The screen
will automatically scroll as you press the UpArrow and DownArrow keys.
When a menu is active, press the UpArrow and DownArrow keys to move the
cursor among the menu items. There is a "wrap-around" function in
effect when moving the cursor through the menu items. If the cursor is
located on the last item of a menu, pressing the DownArrow key will
cause it to move to the first item of the menu. Likewise if the cursor
is located on the first item of a menu, pressing the UpArrow key will
cause it to move to the last item of the menu.
Alt = The Alt key is used to access the pop-up menus. To bring up a
menu, hold down the Alt key and press the highlighted key of the
menu you have chosen. The Alt key combinations for the menus
are listed below.

that is displayed. The Escape key always backs up one step.
Repeated pressing of Escape will eventually exit to DOS from
anywhere in the program.
To exit the program, press the Escape key from the main program
screen (when no menus are displayed). For more information on
the program exit functions, see Section 8.
By pressing the Escape key when a menu is displayed, the menu
will be removed and you will be back to the main program screen.
Enter = The Enter key selects a file or selects the menu option
that the cursor is currently highlighted.
When the main screen is displayed, locate the cursor on a ZIP file,
and press the Enter key. This will expand the file. When a file is
expanded, you can view its contents, including files, the first line
of the ZIP comment, and various file information. (Use the Setup
menu to set different display options.)
When you press Enter, PKZMENU will inform you if a file has errors and
cannot be expanded. A window such as the one shown below will appear.

If the cursor is located on a file inside a ZIP file, and you press the
Enter key, the file will be tagged. Press the Enter key again to untag
it. When the main display screen is displayed, and the cursor is
located on a subdirectory, press the Enter key to change to that
subdirectory. The files from that directory will then be displayed.
If the cursor is located on ../ (backup one directory), press Enter to
back up one directory level.
When within a menu, position the cursor on the desired option and
press the Enter key. This will cause the option that is currently
highlighted to be performed. (You can alternatively press the
highlighted letter of the option you wish to perform.) For example,
from the Tag menu, press the Enter key when the cursor is located on
Flip Tags, and all the files that were previously tagged will be
untagged and all the files that were previously untagged will be tagged.
Space Bar = The Space bar is used to tag files in the file display
area, and to toggle available values in the menus.
When working from the main program screen, press the space bar to tag
the file where the cursor is currently located and advance the cursor
to the next file. If the cursor is currently located on a sub-
directory, press the Space bar to move the cursor to the next listed
subdirectory or file. (A subdirectory cannot be tagged.)
2-4
From within a menu, press the Space bar to toggle among available
options. For example, from the Sort menu you can sort the file names
alphabetically A-Z or Z-A. Use the UpArrow or DownArrow keys to
position the cursor over the Name field and press the Space bar to
toggle A-Z or Z-A.
Tab = When a menu is displayed, pressing the Tab key operates the same
as the DownArrow key. If you hold down the Shift key and press
the Tab key, it will operate the same as the UpArrow key.
Home = The Home key is used to position the cursor. From the main
display screen, press the Home key to locate the cursor on the
first listing in the display area. This will be ../ (backup one
directory) if you are running the program from a subdirectory.
When you are working within a menu, press the Home key to locate the
cursor on the top most item of the menu.
End = The End key is used to position the cursor. From the main
display, press End to locate the cursor on the last item in the
display area.
When you are working within a menu, press the End key to locate the
cursor on the last item of the menu.
PageUp = The PageUp key will scroll the cursor up one page of data in
the display area. If there is less than one page of listings, press
PageUp to move the cursor to the first item listed.
PageDown = The PageDown key will advance the cursor down one page of
data in the display area. If there is less than one page of
listings before the last item, press PageDown to move the cursor to
the last item.
T = The T key is used to display technical information pertaining to a
file. To use this function, position the cursor on a file and press
the T key. The information that appears will be different depending
on whether the file is a ZIP file or a file within a ZIP file. The
following screen is an example of the information that will appear
for a compressed file.

other files in the file display area by using the arrow keys. The
information in the window will change to correspond to the file where
the cursor is currently positioned.
N = Press the N key from the main program area to display a new
directory of the current directory. This is useful if you have
removed files from the file display area and you want to view them
once again.
F1 = Press the F1 function key to display a help screen. The help
screen includes basic information needed to run PKZMENU. To remove
the help screen and return to program operation, press any key.
F2 = Press the F2 function key to extract all tagged files. The files
will be extracted to the current extract directory. The F2 function
key operates the same as the Extract tagged files option from the
Extract menu. For detailed information on the Extract tagged files
option, see Section 3.
F3 = The F3 function key is used to test the integrity of any tagged
files. The files will not be extracted; they will only be tested.
The files will be displayed on the screen as they are tested along
with the outcome of the testing. 'OK' will be listed after all
files that have passed the integrity test. PKZMENU will also list
which files have errors.
This function operates the same as the Test integrity option of the
Extract menu. For more information on the Test integrity function,
see Section 3.
F5 = The F5 function key is used to change the current drive/directory.
This refers to the directory that is displayed in the file display
area. It is not the same as the extract directory. (The extract
directory can be set to an alternate drive/directory by using the
Where to extract option from the Extract menu).
To change the current drive/directory, press the F5 function key and
PKZMENU will prompt you with an entry area similar to the following.
╔═ Change Drive ═════════════════════════════════════╗
║ _ ║
║ C:/ECLIPSE ║
║ C:/PKWARE/PKZMENU ║
║ C:/SB ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Enter the new drive/directory at the flashing cursor. PKZMENU retains
a list of up to the last five directories entered. To return to one of
these directories, locate the cursor on it and press the Enter key.
2-6
You can also change the current drive/directory from the Misc menu by
using the Drive/directory F5 option. For more information on this
function, see Section 6.
USING PKZMENU WITH THE MOUSE
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
You can use a mouse to perform all of the major functions of PKZMENU.
This section describes the general operating requirements you will need
to follow when using a mouse.
In order to use a mouse with PKZMENU, you must do both of the following:
- You must have a mouse driver installed before you start the program.

right mouse button.
THE MENU STRUCTURE
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
PKZMENU is a completely menu driven software program. All of the file
functions are accessed through the menus.
PKZMENU contains a main menu which is listed across the top of the
screen. There are six main menu categories:
Extract
Tag
Sort
Miscellaneous
Setup
Exit
When you select one of these main menu options, (either by using the
RightArrow/LeftArrow keys, the Alt key, or the mouse), a corresponding
pop-up menu will appear. The pop-up menus contain the program
options. Figure 2-1 below illustrates the main menu with the Sort
pop-up menu selected.

USING THE MENUS
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The following three sections explain the operating instructions for
accessing a pop-up menu, invoking menu options and toggling menu items.
SELECTING A POP-UP MENU
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The main menu options listed across the top of the screen can be
accessed through a variety of ways. They are listed below.
Alt key = The Alt key is used in conjunction with the highlighted
letter of the main menu titles. For example, to bring up the Tag
pop-up menu, hold down the Alt key and press the T key. The
Tag menu will then appear. All of the Alt key combinations are
listed below.
Alt-E Extract
Alt-T Tag
Alt-S Sort
Alt-M Miscellaneous
Alt-P Setup
Alt-X Exit
RightArrow key = The RightArrow key will bring up the menu that
was displayed last. If you press it again, the menu immediately
to the right of the one currently displayed will appear. Repeatedly
pressing the RightArrow key will continue to bring up the menu
immediately to the right.
LeftArrow key = The LeftArrow key will bring up the menu that was
displayed last. If you press it again, the menu immediately to
the left of the one currently displayed will appear. Repeatedly
pressing the LeftArrow key will continue to bring up the menu
immediately to the left.
Mouse = The mouse is used to access the pop-up menus by pointing
to the main menu title at the top of the screen and clicking the
left mouse button. The pop-up menu will then appear.
SELECTING A POP-UP MENU OPTION
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
There are several options available for selecting a function from a
pop-up menu. They are listed below.
Enter key = The Enter key is used to invoke the highlighted menu
option. For example, if the cursor is located on the Tag all files
option of the Tag menu, pressing the Enter key will cause all of
the files in the display to be tagged.
The Enter key is also used to access additional pop-up menus
that are available from the first level of pop-up menus. If an
additional menu is associated with a menu item, a small square ■
will appear immediately to the left of the menu option.
2-10
Highlighted letters = In every menu option there is a highlighted
letter. To access a particular menu item, simply type the high-
lighted letter.
DownArrow key = The DownArrow key moves the cursor down one item at a
time. If the cursor is positioned on the last menu item, pressing
the DownArrow key will "wrap-around" and position the cursor on the
first item.
UpArrow key = The UpArrow key moves the cursor up one item at a time.
If the cursor is positioned on the first menu item, pressing the
UpArrow key will "wrap-around" and position the cursor on the last
item.
Tab key = The Tab key will move the cursor around within the pop-up
menu. Use the Tab key to move the cursor over the menu items,
moving down one item at a time, the same as the DownArrow key. If
you hold down the Shift key and press the Tab key, the cursor moves
the same as the UpArrow key.
Mouse = The mouse is used to chose a menu item, by pointing to the
particular option and clicking the left button.
TOGGLING MENU ITEMS
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
There are several items in the pop-up menus that can be toggled through
a number of valid choices. For example, in the Sort menu, you can sort
the file names alphabetically A through Z or Z through A.
Space bar = To toggle between available options, position the cursor
over the option, and press the Space bar.
Highlighted letters = In every menu item there is a high-lighted
letter. To toggle available options, simply press this highlighted
letter. For example in the Setup - Video & sound options menu,
pressing the B key will toggle the Beep option between ON and
OFF (√ and ∙).
Mouse = To toggle an option using the mouse, such as A-Z or Z-A
in the Sort menu, point to the characters that will toggle and click
the left mouse button.

The Extract menu, shown above, is used to extract the files that you
have tagged. These files can be extracted to a specified directory, to
a printer, or to the console (display screen). The following options
can be specified either ON or OFF using this menu: Overwrite, Newer,
Directory creation, and Volume label creation. The Extract menu also
provides a function for testing the integrity of a compressed file and
a function for recreating a volume label. Also included in this menu,
is a submenu used for specifying the masking ON or OFF of certain file
attributes. All of these options are explained in detail in the
following sections.
EXTRACT - EXTRACT TAGGED FILES
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option will extract all files that are currently tagged to the
extract directory. The extract directory can be specified using the
Where to extract function, of the Extract menu. If no directory is
specified from the Extract menu, the directory listed in the Setup menu
under the Where to extract option will be used.
When you are extracting files, you can either extract an entire ZIP
file, or you can extract certain files from within a ZIP file. To
extract an entire ZIP file, tag the ZIP file, and be sure none of the
individual files within the ZIP file have been tagged. To tag a file,
use the arrow keys to locate the cursor on the ZIP file and press the
Space bar.
To extract specific files from within a ZIP file, you must expand the
ZIP file and then tag the files individually. Expanding is done by
locating the cursor on the ZIP file and pressing the Enter key. The
file will then be expanded so that you can view the files contained
within. Then use the arrow keys to position the cursor and tag the
specific files you wish to extract. You can tag files within a ZIP
file by pressing either the Enter key or the Space bar.
3-2
To use the Extract tagged files option, use the following steps.
Step 1. Tag the file or files to be extracted.
To do this from the keyboard, locate the cursor on the chosen files
and press the Space bar or the Enter key. To use the mouse, point to
the file and click once to tag it. (Clicking twice on a ZIP file will
expand it.) A triangular shaped marker will appear immediately to the
left of all tagged files.
Step 2. Bring up the Extract menu.
Do this by either pressing Alt-E, or the RightArrow, or LeftArrow
key. To use the mouse, point to the Extract menu title at the top
of the screen, and click the left mouse button.
Step 3. Execute the Extract tagged files option.
Do this by positioning the cursor on the Extract tagged files option and
pressing the Enter key. You could also simply press the E key. To use
the mouse, point to the Extract tagged files option and click the left
mouse button.
NOTE: There is a hot-key option that is available with this function.
Press the F2 function key to extract any tagged files without using the
Extract menu.
As the files are being extracted, a screen similar to the one shown in
Figure 3-1 will appear. This screen displays the ZIP file and the names
of the files as they are being extracted. If a ZIP comment exists for
the ZIP file, it will also be displayed. The directory where the tagged
files are being extracted to will be listed along with the files as they
are extracted.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option will extract all currently tagged files to the printer. The
contents of the files will be printed. The printer setup options,
including printer port, print mode, and form feed between files, are set
from the Setup menu. The printer setup options are explained in
Section 7.
When extracting files to a printer, an entire ZIP file can be extracted
or specific files from within a ZIP file can be extracted. To extract
specific files, expand the ZIP file and tag the desired files within the
ZIP file.
To extract files to a printer, use the following steps.
Step 1. Tag the file or files to be extracted.
See the Extract tagged files example on page 3-3.
Step 2. Bring up the Extract menu.

and press the Enter key. You could also simply press the P key.
To use the mouse, point to the Print tagged files option and click
the left mouse button.
Be sure that the printer is turned ON and is online before you
start printing the tagged files or PKZMENU will display an error
message on the screen.
EXTRACT - CONSOLE MORE: YES/NO
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option is used to extract all tagged files to the console, or
monitor. The contents of the files will be displayed on the monitor.
When extracting files to the monitor, an entire ZIP file can be
extracted or specific files from within a ZIP file can be extracted. To
extract specific files, expand the ZIP file and tag the files within the
ZIP file.
3-5
The More option is used to specify whether or not the program will
pause between pages of information. If More is set to NO, the files
will scroll on the screen, and will pause only between files. If More
is set to YES, the program will pause between pages of information and
will prompt you to press the Space bar to continue.
The files will scroll on the screen as they are being extracted. When
the end of a file is reached, the program will inform you of this and
will prompt you to continue with the next file (press any key) or cancel
the extraction (press the Escape key).
To extract files to the monitor, use the following steps.
Step 1. Tag the file or files to be extracted.
See the Extract tagged files example on page 3-3.
Step 2. Bring up the Extract menu.
See the Extract tagged files example on page 3-3.
Step 3. Set the More option.
When the More option is set to YES, the program will pause
between pages of information. When it is set to NO, the file
contents will scroll continuously on the screen without stopping.
To set the More option using the keyboard, use the arrow keys to
locate the bar cursor on the Console More: YES/NO option and
press the Space bar to toggle between YES and NO. You can also
toggle the value by simply pressing the M key, regardless of where
the cursor is located. To set the More option using the mouse,
point to More and click the left mouse button.
Step 4. Execute the Console More: YES/NO option.
To do this, position the cursor on the Console more: YES/NO
option and press the Enter key. You could also simply press the
C key. To use the mouse, point to Console and click the left
mouse button. The contents of the tagged files will be displayed
on the monitor.
EXTRACT - TEST INTEGRITY
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option will not actually extract the tagged files, but will test
them for integrity. It performs a CRC check to test the files to make
sure they are valid and have not been corrupted. The CRC (Cyclic
Redundancy Check) test is a very accurate technique used to test the
integrity of ZIP files. The names of the files will scroll on the
screen as they are being tested. An example screen is shown in Figure
3-3.
When testing the integrity of files, an entire ZIP file can be tested or
specific files from within a ZIP file can be tested. To test specific
files, expand the ZIP file and tag the selected files within the ZIP
file.

In this example, two files, CHAPS.ZIP and SOURCE.ZIP, were tagged and
tested for integrity. The files are listed on the screen as they are
tested. 'OK' will be displayed after each file as it is tested if the
CRC check is valid. All of the files tested above except for the last
file tested OK. The message at the bottom of the screen will list the
total number of files that failed the CRC check.
NOTE: PKZIPFIX, another PKWARE program, cannot be used to correct a
file that has failed a CRC check.
To test the integrity of specific files, use the following steps.
Step 1. Tag the file or files to be tested.
See the Extract tagged files example on page 3-3.
Step 2. Bring up the Extract menu.
See the Extract tagged files example on page 3-3.
Step 3. Execute the Test integrity option.
Position the cursor on the Test integrity option and press the
Enter key, or simply press the T key. To use the mouse, point to
the Test integrity option and click the left mouse button.
3-7
The test information will scroll on the screen as the tagged files
are tested.
NOTE: There is a hot-key option that is available with this
function. Press the F3 function key to test the integrity of any
tagged files without using the Extract menu.
EXTRACT - OVERWRITE
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option is used to enable the Overwrite function. When Overwrite
is set to ON, files that exist in the extract directory with the same
name, will be automatically overwritten by any same-named files being
extracted. The program will not prompt you for confirmation before
overwriting any files. If the Overwrite option is set to OFF, none of
the files will be automatically overwritten. If a file exists in the
extract directory with the same name as the file being extracted, the
program will prompt you for confirmation before the existing file is
overwritten.
NOTE: Either the Overwrite or the Newer option can be set to ON, not
both. (The Newer option will extract files only if they are newer that
any same-named files in the extract directory or if they do not
currently exist in the extract directory.) Recall, that when a Check
mark √ is located immediately to the left of a menu item, the option is
ON. A dot ∙ indicates the option is OFF.
To set the Overwrite option, use the following steps.
Step 1. Bring up the Extract menu.
See the Extract tagged files example on page 3-3.
Step 2. Set the Overwrite option.
To set the Overwrite option using the keyboard, use the arrow keys
to locate the bar cursor on Overwrite and press the Space bar to toggle
between ON and OFF (the check mark and the dot respectively). You can
also toggle the value by simply pressing the O key, regardless of where
the cursor is located. To set the Overwrite option using the mouse,
point to Overwrite and click the left mouse button.
After setting the Overwrite option, you can then perform the Extract
tagged files function. Any files that are extracted, will be extracted
with the Overwrite option as you set it.
3-8
EXTRACT - NEWER
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option will extract the tagged files only if they are newer than
any same-named files already located in the extract directory, or if
they do not exist in the extract directory. If Newer is set to ON,
when a file already exists in the extract directory, PKZMENU will
compare the time and date of the two files (the one being extracted and
the one already existing in the extract directory), and will extract the
file only if it is newer than the one currently on disk.
Recall, that when a Check mark √ is located immediately to the left of a
menu item, the item is ON. A dot ∙ indicates the option is OFF.
To set the Newer option, use the following steps.
Step 1. Bring up the Extract menu.
See the Extract tagged files example on page 3-3.
Step 2. Set the Newer option.
To set the Newer option using the keyboard, use the arrow keys
to locate the bar cursor on Newer and press the Space bar to
toggle between ON and OFF (the check mark and the dot
respectively). You can also toggle the value by pressing the N key,
regardless of where the cursor is located. To set the Newer
option using the mouse, point to Newer and click the left mouse
button.
Any files that are then extracted, will be extracted with the Newer
option as you set it. The Newer option will remain set until it is
changed by the user.
EXTRACT - DIRECTORY CREATION
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option will recreate any pathnames that are stored in the ZIP file
that is being extracted. If the pathnames do not already exist on disk
at the destination, they will be created on extraction. The extracted
files can be placed in their original location by using this option.
If this option is set to OFF, and pathnames are stored in a ZIP file,
only the files themselves will be extracted to the extract directory.
The paths will not be recreated unless the Directory creation option is
set to ON.
3-9
By using this option in combination with the Where to extract option,
you can effectively relocate files on the hard disk. An example is
shown below.
root┬─abc────┬───dir1
│ │
│ └───dir2─┬──dir3
├─def │
│ └──dir4
└─ghi
This example illustrates the ZIP file STORE.ZIP, which contains all of
the files in the abc directory including all its subdirectories (dir1,
dir2, dir3, and dir4).
You can use the Where to extract option to set the extract directory to
root/ghi. If you then extract the ZIP file, STORE.ZIP, it will relocate
all of the files in the abc directory including its subdirectories, to
the ghi directory. This is shown below.
root┬─abc─────┬───dir1
│ │
│ └───dir2─┬──dir3
├─def │
│ └──dir4
└─ghi──abc──┬──dir1
│
└──dir2─┬──dir3
│
└──dir4
Recall, that when a Check mark √ is located immediately to the left of
a menu item, the item is ON. A dot ∙ indicates the option is OFF. The
options can be saved in the PKZMENU configuration file by using the
Write setup to disk option from the Setup menu. See Section 7 for
more details.
To set the Directory creation option, use the following steps.
Step 1. Bring up the Extract menu.
See the Extract tagged files example on page 3-3.
Step 2. Set the Directory creation option.
To set the Directory creation option using the keyboard, use the arrow
keys to locate the cursor on the Directory creation option and press the

EXTRACT - VOLUME LABEL CREATION
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This command is used to restore any volume label that has been stored
in the ZIP file. It is important to remember that the PKZIP command
used to save a volume label does not store a drive letter along with the
label. Upon extraction, the volume label will be assigned to the
extract drive.
To set the Volume label creation option, use the following steps.
Step 1. Bring up the Extract menu.
See the Extract tagged files example on page 3-3.
Step 2. Set the Volume label creation option ON or OFF.
To set the Volume label creation option using the keyboard, use the
arrow keys to locate the cursor on Volume label creation and press the
Space bar to toggle between ON and OFF (the check mark and the dot
respectively). You can also toggle the value by simply pressing the V
key, regardless of where the cursor is located. To set the Volume label
creation option using the mouse, point to Volume label creation and
click the left mouse button.
Any files that are extracted from a ZIP file containing a volume label,
will be extracted to the destination drive/directory and the volume
label of that drive will be replaced with the one contained in the ZIP
file. If you are extracting files from more than one ZIP file at a
given time and there are multiple volume labels, the volume label
extracted last would overwrite any previously extracted labels.
EXTRACT - ATTRIBUTE MASK
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option is used to mask the hidden, system or read only attributes
of files. When these attributes are masked, the files will be treated
as normal writable files. The default setting includes all hidden,
system and read only attributes masked off upon extraction.
You can set the masking of the read only, hidden and system attributes
independently of each other. A submenu is used to set these options.
This submenu is accessed from the Extract menu by locating the cursor
on the Attribute mask option and pressing the Enter key, or by pressing
the A key. If you are using a mouse, point to the Attribute mask option
and click the left mouse button. The submenu will appear as shown
below.
┌───────────────────────┐
│√ Read only masked off │
│√ Hidden masked off │
│∙ System masked off │
└───────────────────────┘
3-11
A check mark √ before the option indicates the option WILL be masked
off. In the above example, the read only and hidden attributes will be
masked off but the system attributes will not be masked off.
To set the Attribute mask option, follow these steps.
Step 1. Bring up the Extract menu.
See the Extract tagged files example on page 3-3.
Step 2. Bring up the Attribute mask submenu.
This is done by locating the cursor on the Attribute mask option and
pressing the Enter key, or by pressing the A key. To use the mouse,
point to Attribute mask and click the left mouse button.
Step 3. Set the Attribute mask options.
The default setting will set the attribute mask options off to ON.
This is indicated by a check mark √ immediately to the left of the
option. The read only, hidden and system attributes can be set
independently of each other. To set an attribute mask option, locate
the cursor on the particular option and press the Space bar to toggle
it.
You can also use the highlighted letter of each option to toggle it
ON or OFF.
To set Read only masked off, press the R key.
To set Hidden masked off, press the H key.
To set System masked off, press the S key.
Any files that are then extracted will be extracted with the Attribute
mask options as you set them.
3-12
EXTRACT - SCRAMBLE (PASSWORD)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option is used to extract any files that were encrypted, or
compressed with password protection. In order to extract a file that
was compressed with password protection, the correct password must be
entered using this command. If you are extracting several files at
once, PKZMENU will skip any encrypted files if the correct password
has not been entered. (This option is not available in the PKZMENU
export version.) When you are entering a password, PKZMENU will prompt
you to type in the password. It will appear as shown in Figure 3-4.

When specifying the password, it must be entered EXACTLY as it was when
the file was encrypted. The password option is case sensitive. It is
important that you remember or record the passwords that you used to
encrypt the file. You will need the password in order to use PKZMENU
to extract the files. PKWARE does not retain a record of these
passwords.
To use the Scramble (password) option, follow these steps.
Step 1. Bring up the Extract menu.
See the Extract tagged files example on page 3-3.
Step 2. Access the Scramble (password) option.
This is done by locating the cursor on the Scramble (password)
option and pressing the Enter key. You could also press the S
key. If you are using a mouse, point to Scramble (password) and
click the left button. PKZMENU will provide an area to enter the
password, as shown in Figure 3-4.
3-13
Step 3. Enter the password.
Enter the password at the flashing cursor. Be sure to enter it
exactly the same as when the file was compressed. After you
have typed the password, press the Enter key to return to the
Extract menu.
You can then extract the tagged files. If the correct password has
been entered, the corresponding encrypted files will be extracted.
If the correct password has not been entered, any encrypted files
will be skipped. PKZMENU will list the files and display which
files have been skipped.
EXTRACT - WHERE TO EXTRACT
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option is used to set the current extract directory. Any
subsequent files that are extracted will be located in this directory.
This is not the same directory that is specified in the Setup menu under
the Where to extract option. Initially the directory specified in the
Setup menu will be copied into the Extract menu. You can change the
extract directory by using the Where to extract option from the Extract
menu.
PKZMENU will always use the directory currently specified in the Extract
menu. If the directory in the Setup menu is then changed, the program
will still use the directory specified in the Extract menu. The Where
to extract option of the Setup menu is used to initially set the Extract
directory when PKZMENU is first run.
PKZMENU retains a list of up to ten extract destinations. This
information is saved in a setup file called PKZMENU.DIR in the directory
where you have the PKZMENU.EXE file located. (You could also specify
an alternate location.) By saving this information, you can retain a
list of the extract destinations that you most frequently use.
When you are entering a new extract directory, PKZMENU will prompt
you with a window for typing in the directory (and drive). It will
appear as shown Figure 3-5. This window expands when you add additional
destinations.

The Tag menu, shown above is used to tag and untag files in the file
display area. A tagged file is one that has been marked for some
operation. By using the batch options of the Tag menu, you can tag or
untag files in groups.
The middle section of the menu can be set to one of two modes; Tag files
mode or Clear tags mode. The other options in the middle section of the
Tag menu (the batch tag options: Name, Size, Date, Only today's files,
In this ZIP, and Archive (changed files)), will function according to
which mode you have set. For example, you could either tag all of the
files within a certain date range, or you could clear the tags from all
files within the range.
There is also a function that will flip the tags. With this option, all
the files that are currently tagged will be untagged, and all the files
that currently are not tagged will be tagged. There is another function
that will remove files from the display area.
All of the functions of the Tag menu are described on the following
pages.
TAG - TAG ALL FILES
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option will tag all of the files. A small triangle will appear to
the left of all files indicating they have been tagged. If a file was
already tagged, it will remain tagged when you use this option. If a
ZIP file has been expanded, the ZIP file and all of the files within the
ZIP file will be tagged.
4-2
To use the Tag all files option from the Tag menu, follow these steps.
Step 1. Bring up the Tag menu.
Do this by either pressing Alt-T, or the RightArrow, or LeftArrow key.
To use the mouse, point to the Tag menu title at the top of the screen,

TAG - REMOVE FROM DISPLAY
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option will remove files from the file display area so they will
not be displayed. The files will NOT be deleted. They simply will not
be displayed. This option is useful when you have a large directory and
you know you will not be using several of the files. If you have too
many files displayed, it makes it difficult to find the files you are
looking for.
To redisplay all of the files in the directory after you have used the
Remove from display option, press the N key (for New directory) and all
of the files will once again be displayed. This option is also useful if
you are running out of memory. It allows you to remove files so that
you can view others.
To use the Remove from display option from the Tag menu, follow these
steps.
Step 1. Tag the files you wish to remove from the display.
This is done from the keyboard by locating the cursor on the selected

All of the options of the Miscellaneous menu are explained in detail in
the following sections.
MISC - DRIVE/DIRECTORY F5
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This option is used to change to another drive and/or directory in the
file display area. This is not necessarily the same directory as the
extract directory. (The extract directory can be set to an alternate
drive/directory by using the Where to extract option of the Extract
menu).
You can bypass the process of using the Misc menu by pressing the F5
function key. It operates the same as the Drive/ directory option from
the Miscellaneous menu.
6-2
Both of the change Drive/directory functions (menu and F5) will prompt
you with a window similar to the one shown in Figure 6-1. This window
is used to enter the new drive and/or directory.

It is used in conjunction with the ZIP file extensions that are set
through the ZIP options submenu of the Setup menu. Only files having
extensions specified with this function will be displayed in the file
display area. Typical choices are .ZIP and .EXE (.EXE for
self-extracting ZIP files). If you have renamed ZIP files or if you
have ZIP files with other extensions, they should be listed using this
function. For more information on the ZIP options, see Section 7.
The default file spec is *.*. This indicates all files with the
extensions set with the ZIP file extensions option of the Setup menu
will be displayed. You can use the Filespec option to further reduce
the displayed files. For example, if you had all .EXE and .ZIP files
listed in the ZIP file extensions option, and you wanted to reduce the
display to only .EXE files, enter *.EXE using the Miscellaneous
Filespec option.
The standard DOS wildcard functions are valid when entering file specs.
For example, if you entered C*.*, only those files that begin with a C
will be displayed. If you entered AB?.*, only those files that have a
name consisting of three characters, starting with AB will be displayed.
Use the following steps to change the file specs of the files displayed
in the file display area.

Pathnames displayed - When this option is ON, any pathnames that are
stored in a ZIP file will be displayed when the ZIP file is expanded.
Volume label creation - PKZIP (version 1.1 or later) is capable of
saving a volume label of a drive in a ZIP file. When this option is ON,
PKZMENU will recreate the volume label when the ZIP file is extracted.
NOTE: Be cautious when using this option, because it is possible to
overwrite the volume label of your hard disk when extracting files.
More (console) - This option is used to set the More option of the
Extract menu. This function is used when extracting files to the
console. It will cause the screen to pause after each page of
information is displayed.
Overwrite - This option is used to set the Overwrite option of the
Extract menu. This function is used to automatically overwrite any
same-named files as files are being extracted, otherwise PKZMENU will
request confirmation before overwriting any existing files.
Newer - This option is used to set the Newer option of the Extract menu.
This function will extract the tagged files only if they are newer than
any same-named files already located in the Extract directory, or if
they do not already exist in the Extract directory.
Directory creation - This option is used to set the Directory creation
option of the Extract menu. This function will recreate the pathnames
that are stored in the ZIP file being extracted.
Halt on error - Setting this option to ON will cause the program to halt
when an error has occurred while performing a PKZMENU function. A
message box will appear on the screen displaying the error. This option
is active with functions such as extracting and testing. If this option
is set OFF, you may miss an error because it may scroll off the screen.
Sort inners - The files within a ZIP file will initially be sorted in
the manner you chose when you start the program. The sorting options
available are:
Unsorted
Percentage of compression
CRC value
Filename
File extension
File date
File size
7-4
Inner display - This menu item is used to determine what file data
will be displayed when a ZIP file is expanded.
To toggle through the available options, use the arrow keys to locate
the cursor on Inner display and press the Space bar or the Enter key, or
the I key. To use the mouse to toggle, point to Inner display and click
the left mouse button.
The files will be displayed in the chosen format immediately after you
exit the Setup menu. There are five options available:
compress info
size, CRC, %
filename only
size, time, date
file comments
Compress info displays the following information: the uncompressed size
of the files in bytes, the compression method used (Shrunk, Imploded, or
Reduced), and the percent reduction in file size.
Size, CRC, % displays the size of the file, the CRC value and the
percentage of file reduction.
Filename only displays only the name of the files within the ZIP file.
Size, Time, Date displays the uncompressed size of the files in bytes,
and the time and date of the files.
File comments displays the first line of any file comments that are
stored in the ZIP file.
Temporary drive - This option is used to designate a temporary drive.
This drive will be used if the current function being performed by
PKZMENU requires writing a temporary file. This option is useful when
you are using a floppy disk with very little disk space left or that is
write protected.
For example, the View file option from the Miscellaneous menu extracts a
file to disk, displays the file and then erases it. If you are using
the files from a floppy disk with no free space, you can have the file
write to a temporary drive.
Where to extract - This option is used to set the extract destination.
All files being extracted will be located here unless you specify
otherwise.
Attribute mask - This menu will access the submenu shown below. This
will allow you to mask the hidden, system or read-only attributes of
files, allowing them to be treated as normal writable files.

Miscellaneous Submenu
The options of the Miscellaneous submenu are explained below.
Initial Sort - This option is used to determine how the files in the
file display area will initially be sorted when PKZMENU is run. You can
resort the files using any of the options from the Sort menu as you are
working within the program. This option is used to specify how you want
the files sorted when you initiate the program.
7-11
There are several initial sort options. They are listed below.
Name A-Z or Z-A
Extension A-Z or Z-A
Time/Date 0-9 or 9-0
Size 0-9 or 9-0
Unsorted
You can sort alphabetically by file name, either A through Z or Z
through A. You can also sort alphabetically by file extension, either
ascending (A-Z) or descending (Z-A). You can sort the files by age,
either oldest to newest (9-0) or newest to oldest (0-9). The files can
also be sorted by size (in bytes), smallest to largest (0-9) or largest
to smallest (9-0). Finally you can select the files to be unsorted.
With this choice, they will appear in the file display area as they
appear in the directory.
After you set the initial sort option, you must save this information in
the PKZMENU configuration file (PKZMENU.CFG) so that the files will be
sorted in that manner the next time you run PKZMENU. This is done with
the Write setup to disk option explained on page 7-23.
Return to start directory - This option is used to return to the startup
directory when exiting PKZMENU by using the Escape key. The startup
directory is the directory that you started the program from.
You can exit PKZMENU by pressing the Escape key. If you press the
Escape key with no menus displayed, a window will appear instructing you
to press one more key, either Escape or Enter. One key will exit to the
startup directory and the other key will exit to the current directory.
The functions of the Escape key and the Enter key are determined by how
you have the Return to startup dir option of the Setup menu set. The
functions are summarized below.
When Return to startup dir is ON (√), the following window will appear
when you press the Escape key.
EXIT TO DOS
╔══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ Press Esc to exit to startup directory ║
║ Press Enter to exit to current directory ║

When Return to startup dir is OFF (∙), the following window will appear
when you press the Escape key.
EXIT TO DOS
╔══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ Press Esc to exit to current directory ║
║ Press Enter to exit to startup directory ║
╚══════════════════════════ Space to abort ╝
In other words, pressing Escape, Escape, will always exit to the
location that the setup specifies.
7-12
Use mouse - This option is used to enable the mouse capabilities of the
program. The mouse cannot be used unless the Use mouse option is set to
ON. Also, the mouse driver must be installed before you start the
program. For more information on using the mouse with PKZMENU, see
Section 2.
You can save the setting of the Use mouse option to disk by using the
Write setup to disk option. This will retain the setting so that it is
the same the next time you use PKZMENU.
386 Instructions - This option is available for users with 386 type
computers. It is used to turn ON or OFF the added 386 instructions.
PKZMENU will utilize these instructions to allow the program to function
even faster. If you are running a different program that will not
effectively utilize the 386 instructions, you can turn them OFF by using
this command.
You can also turn OFF the 386 instructions when you start PKZMENU by
typing either of the following on the command line.
PKZMENU /3
PKZMENU /386
You can save the setting of the 386 instructions option to disk by using
the Write setup to disk option. This will retain the setting so that it
is the same the next time you use PKZMENU.
Check for viruses - When this option is set to ON, PKZMENU will run the
virus checking program you specify whenever files are extracted. It
will then notify you if a computer virus has been detected. The virus
checking function is performed in the background and will not interfere
with program execution.
You can save the setting of the virus checking option to disk by using
the Write setup to disk option. This will retain the setting so that it
is the same the next time you use PKZMENU.
Virus program - This option is used to specify the particular virus
checking program you want PKZMENU to run. It is used in conjunction
with the Check for viruses option explained in the previous section.
Any of the usual virus checking programs are acceptable. Various virus
checking programs are available on the PKWARE BBS.
You can save the virus program to disk by using the Write setup to disk
option. This will retain the setting so that it is the same the next
time you use PKZMENU.
7-13
When you are entering the virus program, PKZMENU will prompt you with an
area for typing in the program file name. You can also enter the
drive/directory where it is located if it is different from the current
directory, and it is not in the PATH statement. It will appear as shown
in Figure 7-6.

List file - This option is used to specify a list file program. It is
used in conjunction with the View file option of the Misc menu. Any of
the usual file display programs are acceptable, such as LIST, TYPE,
DISPLAY, or BROWSE. The first 11 characters of the list program and its
location, will be displayed in the Setup menu.
You can save the List file option that you set in the Setup menu so that
the next time you bring up PKZMENU, the same program will be set. This
information is saved in the PKZMENU.CFG file by using the Write setup to
disk option.
When you are entering a List file, PKZMENU will prompt you with an area
for typing in the program name. You must also enter the drive/directory
where it is located if it is different from the current directory, and
is not in the PATH statement. It will appear as shown in Figure 7-7. If
you have already specified a program using this command, it will be
displayed in the area provided. You can delete or edit the displayed
program.

SETUP - WRITE SETUP TO DISK
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This menu item is used to save any options you have set in the Setup
menu to disk. By doing this, the options will be retained as you set
them the next time (and times thereafter) that you run PKZMENU.
The setup information is saved in the PKZMENU configuration file,
PKZMENU.CFG. By default, this file will be located in the same
directory where the PKZMENU.EXE file is located. When PKZMENU is run,
the program will try to read the .CFG file from the current directory,
if it does not exist, it will look in the environment path and finally
where the PKZMENU.EXE file is located.
By creating different .CFG files in different locations, you can have
several different setup configurations available for running PKZMENU.
To write the setup to disk, use the following steps.
Step 1. Bring up the Setup menu.
See the example on page 7-8 for details.
Step 2. Access the Write setup to disk option.
To do this, locate the cursor on Write setup to disk, and press the
Enter key. You could also simply press the W key. To use the mouse,
point to Write setup to disk, and click the left mouse button. PKZMENU
will provide you with an area to enter the file location. An example is
