  2. Browsing interface

  5.         Many hypertext systems use a mouse for selecting information for
  6.         detailed exploration.  However, I prefer "arrow key browsing" of
  7.         information, for the following reasons:
  8.  
  9.           (1)  Arrow keys are faster than moving a mouse        <link11>
  10.           (2)  Arrow keys are familiar to most computer users   <link34>
  11.           (3)  Arrow keys require less physical effort than a mouse
  12.           (4)  Arrow keys require less hand/eye coordination    <link11>
  13.           (5)  Arrow keys are easily learned in a minute
  14.           (6)  Arrow keys are sufficient for all operations
  15.  
  16.         Having built and used several hypertext systems with hypertext
  17.         jumps exceeding 50,000 links <link10>, I do not believe a mouse is
  18.         necessary or beneficial for text-based hypertext applications.
