RAMVIEW
Command
Frank Dever and David Thomas 1988 No. 14 (Utilities)
Purpose: Provides pop-up display and string searches of RAM contents, in ASCII
and hex, from within an application.
Format: [d:][path]RAMVIEW
Remarks:RAMVIEW is a memory-resident utility that may be installed either at
the DOS prompt or as a command in an AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Its default hotkey is
Alt-R, and it will pop up in any text mode that is at least 80-columns wide.
To exit RAMVIEW and return to your application, press the Esc key. Executing
RAMVIEW a second time uninstalls the utility if no other Terminate-and-Stay
Resident (TSR) programs have been loaded after it.
RAM addresses are displayed both in absolute and in conventional
segment:offset form. The G (Goto) key is used to display the contents of
memory at a specific address.
Pressing A or H allows entry of an ASCII or hexadecimal search string
of up to 20 characters. When using Hex entries each byte must be represented
by two characters. The bytes may be separated by a space. Pressing Enter
starts the search beginning at the current memory location. To scan for the
next match, press N (Next). When no more matches are found, the address is
reset to 0000:0000.
The Up- and Down-arrow keys are used to shift the memory display by
one line (16 bytes). PgUp and PgDn move the display by a screen page (368
bytes). The Home and End keys set the memory display to the beginning and end
of the 1MB address space.
Instructions for changing the default Alt-R hotkey are contained in
the article, as is a table showing the main memory areas of the PC/XT/AT.
