******************************** PRELIMINARIES *******************************
Although this version has been tested there is always the possibility
of a bug or two(Murphy's Law :>) ). Version 2.0 is a major re-write
over v1.2 so I suggest you read this documentation. There have only
been 2 releases of 1124RSxx.EXE(v1.2 and v2.0). Since v2.0 is just about
totally re-written, I decided to give it the version of 2.0 instead of
v1.3.
Listed below is some initial program information. Please review it.
1) System Requirements: At least CGA mode
Using LPT1 for your Printer
116k RAM(v2.0)
1- Disk Drive(360,720,Hard Drive etc.)
Pansonic KX-P1124 or Epson LQ-2500 Printer
(others printers may also work, especially Epsons and compatibles)
2) Your printer MUST be in "Program Mode" and "Epson LQ-2500 Mode" and
you must be using LPT1.
3) You use this program at your own risk. No warranties are implied.
The author assumes no liability or responsibility for its performance.
4) This Program, in its unaltered state, will always have a Filename
adhereing to the following format:
1124RSxx.EXE(where xx is the version number)
\____/\/
Filename___/ \This will be the version number
which is version 2.0 for this version
thus this program is named 1124RS20.EXE.
There will be contained within the filename 1124RS20.ZIP
the following 5 files:
1124RS20.EXE - The Program File \ These 3 file MUST be
1124RS20.000 - Supplementary Program File > present in your current
1124RS20.001 - Supplementary Program File / directory or the program
will NOT work!
1124RS20.DOC - Program Documentation
REFCHART.EXE - Prints a MARGIN/PITCH Reference Chart(see N command)
This filename format shall remain in effect hereafter.
5) If you are not familiar with your printer commands it is suggested
that you reference your printer manual prior to selecting a command.
Undesirable results may occur if you are not cognizant of what you
are doing or intend to do. Many commands have certain limitations
and conditions. So if you are unsure of what a command does then
refer to your printer manual.
6) A lot of time and thought have went into this program. If you find
it of value a $2.00 gratutity would be grately appreciated(no checks
please). If you have comments, suggestions or problems feel free
to write to me at:

(Please enclose a SASE if you would like a reply)
7) You may freely distribute this program but please make SURE that all
5 necessary files(see item 4 above) are included. It is NOT to be
SOLD.
As stated above, this program operates with the Panasonic KX-P1124
printer in the Epson LQ-2500 mode. It may work on many other brands of
printers also(especially if its an Epson or Epson compatible).

*************************** PROGRAM OPERATION ********************************
Upon running this program you will be presented with a menu of
printer options. Whats important here is that upon initial boot-up of
this program, your printers default macro(macro #1) will be in effect.
Since the program does not know what your default printer settings are
it might be a bit out of sync. This is NO problem though. You can simply
press the proper command keys to correspond to your printers initial setup.
This step is NOT necessary however, because as you enter commands your
printer will eventually be in sync with the program. Again, this is NOT
a problem. You MUST have your printer on and at LPT1 when running this
program. Failure to do so will result in a device not present error.
This program is very user friendly. After you have used it for just a
short time you will have mastered its operation. I will however list
the commands and tell what most of them do. Most of the commands are
self-explanatory but some need to be reflected upon. As you select
your commands you will notice two things happening:
1) The printer BELL will sound at the execution of each command. This
is the Printer < BELL > Command Execution Verify at work. This
verifies that the respective command was sent and the printer did
indeed receive it. Several commands, like Line Feed, do not sound
the BELL after execution because it will be evident that the printer
did receive and execute the command.
2) The command you selected will turn to light Red on a black background.
This is the Command Execution Visual Display. This gives you a visual
status of your printers current settings.
Some commands are of the ON/OFF type. That is, for instance the "q" command
(Proportional Pitch). If you press the letter "q" it will turn Proportional
Pitch ON, if you press "q" a second time, it will turn it OFF. These will be
discussed in detail later in the COMMANDS section of this manual.
In the middle, near the bottom of your screen is the command window. It is
white text on a red background and denoted by the "Enter Your Selection: "
prompt. This window will always be white on red when waiting for a primary
command. Only commands on your screen will be accepted as input. Other keys
will be rejected and an audible tone will sound. Other pertinant messages
will also appear in the Command Window.
For secondary commands, the window will be green on black in most instances.
Secondary commands are of the type that require user input parameters. For
instance if you select the N(Set Margins Command) the command window will
turn green on black with a prompt of "Enter value (0-80):". After entering
a value, the command window will again revert back to white on red with the
"Enter Your Selection: " prompt awaiting your next command.
All secondary commands, except for "Print Text File" are denoted by a small
yellow "n" in or after the command. "n" is a variable and requires user
input. Commands are in UPPER CASE, lower case, or numeric. If the command
you wish to issue is a lower case "a" then you must type a lower case "a".
If the command is an UPPER CASE "B" then you must type an upper case "B".
All commands are categorized and color coded as shown:
GREEN = Print Mode
MAGENTA = Fonts
LT. CYAN = Pitch
YELLOW = Highlight
LT. BLUE = Character Set
LT. GREEN = Paper Feed
BLUE = Word Processor Mode
LT. MAGENTA = Page Format
BROWN = Utilities and Misc. Commands
ENTERING VARIABLES:
Upon selecting a "n" secondary command, that command will begin to flash
on your screen. This lets you know which command you will be entering
variables for.
When you select a secondary "n" command you will be presented with a prompt
similar to this(depending on the command): "Enter Value (0-127): ---". In
this example, values between and including 0 and 127 are valid input.
You must enter variables in the proper format. For example if you wanted to
enter the value of 1 you would type 001, if you wanted to enter the value of
12 you would type 012, if you wanted to enter the value of 120 you would type
120. All invalid input(letters, values above or below the limits) will be
rejected, an audible tone will sound, and the Command Window will display
either an Invalid Input or its Out Of Range. The N) Set Margins n Command
will have 2 variables that need to be entered(1 for the left margin, 1 for the
right margin). Hitting "ENTER" alone at one of these prompts will have
different results depending on the command(the results are explained in the
Commands portion of this manual). Hitting the "BACKSPACE" key will delete
your current input and clear the line for new input. For example you are at
a secondary command prompting "Enter Value (0-127): ---" and you entered 11,
the prompt will now look like: "Enter Value (0-127): 11-". Hitting Backspace
will return the prompt to: "Enter Value (0-127): ---". There is NO NEED to
hit ENTER after entering a value. The program will do that for you, so if
you wanted to enter a value of 111, simply type 111(without hitting ENTER).
ENTERING FILENAMES:
When you select command 7(Print Text File) you again will be presented with a
secondary command prompt in the command window. It will look like this:
Enter Filename: ------------
The maximum characters allowed for a filename is 12. If the file you want to
print out is exactly 12 characters then there is no need to hit ENTER upon
typing the last character of the filename. The program will do that for you.
Example: Enter Filename: 1124RS20.DOC (NO NEED to hit ENTER)
If the file you want to print out is less than 12 characters then you will
have to hit ENTER upon typing the last character of the filename.
Example: Enter Filename: MANUAL.TXT-- (NEED to hit ENTER)
Hitting your BACKSPACE KEY at any of the 12 character locations EXCEPT the
last one(position 12) will delete your current input and clear the line for
new input. Only valid DOS characters are accepted, others will be rejected
and an audible tone will sound as well as a message in the Command Window.
Hitting ENTER alone on a blank line(position 1) Aborts.
INTERACTIVE COMMANDS:
Interactive Commands are commands, when selected, have a direct affect on the
status of other commands. Sometimes by selecting one command may change
values or cancel a command you have selected. This is normal operation.
For Example, lets say your current printer setup is Draft Mode with Pica
Pitch. You decide you want to change to Proportional Pitch so you enter the
appropriate command to do so. Your current printer setup has just changed to
LQ Mode, Courier Font and Proportional. Why? Because Proportional Pitch is
ONLY available in LQ Mode. Another example would be to say your current
printer setup is Draft Mode. You decide to change to Script LQ Font. Instead
of first entering the "a" command to enter LQ Mode then secondly having to
enter the "f" command for Script Font, you simply hit the "f" command and it
will automatically set LQ Mode for you. One last example, say your current
printer setting is set to Skip Perf 6 Lines. You decide to change the Page
Length. When you select the "m" command(Page Length n Lines), Skip Perf 6
Lines is CANCELLED(you will have to reset it). In short, without Interactive
Commands we all could get into a BIG MESS!
SCREEN CLOCK:
The clock/date on your screen at initial start-up of this program will not be
accurate. In fact, it will be showing the time and date this program was
compiled. Also, its not a real-time clock. That is, it ONLY updates the
time and date after each command selection. If the program is idle for any
length of time, the time will not be accurate but pressing any key will
update it to the current time.
PROBLEMS:
If you are experiencing problems with this program then first check the
basics. By this I mean, for instance if you are getting double Line Feeds
then you probably have your AUTOMATIC LF and AUTOMATIC CR set to ON in
your initial printer set-up. If the problem is with DL Fonts, then again
check your initial printer set-up to insure you have your DOWNLOAD BUFFER
enabled. Be sure your printer is in LQ-2500 Emulation Mode and not in
IBM Proprinter X24 Mode. If you still are experiencing problems then all
I can suggest is that you reference your printer manual and read up on the
command or commands that are giving you problems.
ONE LAST THING:
Insure that the files, 1124RS20.EXE, 1124RS20.000 and 1124RS20.001 are in
your current directory. If not, the program will malfunction.

- Selects/De-Selects Downloaded Font(available in LQ and Draft Mode)
Using Downloaded Fonts:
To even begin to use DL Fonts, you must first have the optional 32k
buffer chip and your initial printer setup must have the Download
Buffer ENABLED.
There are several ways of making DL fonts. This program is NOT a font
editor. You must already have some designed fonts. There are several
ways of designing DL fonts. One can use BASIC Language(see your printer
manual) or one can use a font editor and there are probably other ways
also. The font editor/loader I use is a program by James Hardy. Its
called LQ FONT GENERATOR(LQFONTS.ZIP in zipped form). This is an
excellent program for designing fonts. It also has about 12 new fonts
in the zipped program. The LQ FONT GENERATOR seems to work very well
with the KX-P1124 printer. There surely are others available but for
the rest of the discussion of DL Fonts, I will be referring to the LQ
FONT GENERATOR program. The LQ FONT GENERATOR appears to save your
fonts in a data file which is then loaded into the printer via a
load.exe supplementary program. Other fonts/editors may use a different
method. DL Fonts can be either LQ and/or Draft however, the LQ FONT
GENERATOR only produces LQ Fonts. Again, other Font editors may do
both. It depends on the program.
There are 2 ways to load a LQ or Draft Font for use with the 1124RS20
program:
1) Load the fonts from DOS prior to running 1124rs20.
2) Load the 1124rs20 program then drop to DOS and load the font.
Using this method I have found that upon returning to the 1124RS20
program, the screen will be messed up. This is not a problem.
Simply use the R)eset command and it will redraw the screen. Other
font packages may or may not have this effect. It all depends on
how the program operates.
Now that you know how to load DL Fonts, lets put them to use. The i)
command toggles your LQ/Draft Fonts ON or OFF. When the Downloaded CG
command is activated, your printer will print using the Font you just
Downloaded to your printer. When its OFF you will then be using Fonts
available on the program screen. If you are in LQ Mode with DL Fonts
selected you will also noticed on your screen that one of the other LQ
Fonts is still highlighted and activated. Don't let this confuse you.
When the i) Downloaded CG is active, you WILL be using DL Fonts. The
purpose of having both Downloaded CG and say Courier Font selected is
because even though you are using DL Fonts, any of the other built in
LQ Fonts(Courier, Sans Serif, Prestige, Script and Bold PS) has a
direct effect on the characters in the DL Font that have not been
re-defined. Confused? For example, lets say I have Downloaded a font
to the printer called OUTLINE. OUTLINE has redefined ASCII characters
of 48 thru 122(just an example). Now from the 1124RS20 program you
activated Downloaded CG and Sans Serif. With this setting, ASCII 48
thru 122 will be printed in the OUTLINE Font while all other not
defined characters will be printed in Sans Serif. This gives you quite
a few different ways to manipulate DL Fonts.(End of Example)
If the DL Font is ONLY LQ Font and you select Draft Mode, then normal
Draft Characters will be printer. According to the printer manual Draft
and LQ Fonts can be DLed simultaneously. If you do this, you should
be able to toggle between LQ and Draft Downloaded Characters using the
a)LQ Mode and b)Draft Mode commands(I have not tried this because I do
not have any Draft DLed character sets but it should work).
Another thing you should be aware of when using DLed Fonts and 1124RS20 is
that if you issue the R)eset, S)Initialize or Q)uit command your DLed Fonts
will still be resident and ready for use in your printer. There is NO need
to re-load the DL font after using these commands.
As I previously stated, different Font packages may operate differently from
our example. No matter what the means are for making and loading the DL Font
you should still be able to gain access to them from the 1124RS20 program.

note: The above diagram can be printed on your printer for quick
reference. Run the file: REFCHART.EXE to do so.
caution: Whenever you change pitch, you should re-check your left and
right margins. Margins DO NOT change with different pitch
selections. For example, say you're in Proportional, Compressed,
Elite pitches with a left margin of 0 and a right margin or 190.
You then change pitch to Pica, Cancel Proportional and Cancel
Compressed, well, this change will only give you a maximum of
80 columns but your margins will still be set to L=0 R=190.
Using 80 columns with your right margin set to 190 columns should
not harm your printer. The print head still should not exceed
80 columns even though you have it set to 190. I believe the
printers internals will prevent the print head from traveling
beyond safe limits but I am not 100% sure of this so it would
be wise to keep an eye on your margin settings when changing
pitches.

R) RESET PRINTER

(Your printers power-up default settings will be in effect)

S) INITIALIZE
- Initializes Printer and Screen
- Downloaded Fonts still remain printer resident
note: The difference between Reset and Initialize is that
when you select Reset, your printer will be at its default
(power-up) setting whereas if you select Initialize it will
send a specific set of commands to set your printer. The
Initialization will set your printer and screen to this:
Draft Mode
Pica
International Character Set USA
Graphic Character Set 2
1/6" Paper Feed
Page Length 66 Lines
Left Margin 0 Right Margin 80
Skip Perf 6 Lines
Bi-Directional Printing
This, I feel, is a good starting point and a good setting to print
out Draft copies. Personally, I always have my printer start up with
these settings and should I require LQ Mode then I simply issue the
LQ Mode command. This command should also put your printer in SYNC with
the 1124RS20 program under most conditions.
