  1. Internal System Error Message
  2.  
  3. Some of you may have encountered an alert which says
  4.  
  5. "Internal System Error! (Error Number)
  6. 1. Note what you just did.
  7. 2. Use Save As... to save your work.
  8. 3. Call Tech. Support.
  9.  
  10. As the Reference Guide says, this message indicates that RAM memory may have
  11. been corrupted. This corruption may be caused by a number of different
  12. things, including background utilities, a bad RAM chip, or -- the
  13. unthinkable -- a bug in Ventura Publisher. In version 1.1, this message
  14. occurred because many people ran Ventura Publisher with very little
  15. conventional memory remaining. In version 2.0, Ventura Publisher requires
  16. that at least 100K of conventional memory be available prior to starting the
  17. program (less than 50K is required when running the Professional Extension).
  18. This keeps temporary buffers from overflowing and possibly corrupting areas
  19. of RAM memory.

  21. If an Internal System Error does occur, do not continue modifying your
  22. chapter. Immediately turn to Appendix C of the Reference Guide and follow
  23. the steps given there exactly. These are repeated here:

  25. 1. Do not make any further changes to your chapter.
  26. 2. Use the Set Preferences option to change Keep Backup Files to YES.
  27. 3. Use the Save As option and save the chapter under a different name than
  28. shown in the Title Bar.
  29. 4. QUIT from Xerox Ventura Publisher.
  30. 5. Re-boot your computer and then run Xerox Ventura Publisher again. Re-load
  31. the chapter. If the message appears again, contact Xerox Technical support
  32. for further assistance.

  34. Some people have asked what the numbers which appear in the Internal System
  35. Error messages alert mean. Here is an explanation.
  36.  
  37. System Error 19: Memory access outside of proper address range. Probably
  38. caused by a bad data structure, software could not recover, or bug in code.
  39.  
  40. System Errors 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 21, 82, 83, 150,
  41. 151: Ventura internal memory manager is corrupted. The numbers identify the
  42. location within Ventura Publisher code where the error occurred. These
  43. errors are more serious than System 19 and you may not be able to save the
  44. chapter successfully.

  46. System Error 25: Text line element error. Display is corrupted, but no loss
  47. of data.

  49. System Error 9999: Illegal serial number. The occurs in the network
  50. environment where the user must have a legal serial number.
