@1ST PAR PAL = <B>StyList<D><189> 1988 by Kerry S. Hauptli, is a commercial
software package distributed electronically by BBS systems, it is
not public domain. StyList may be downloaded and used for a period
of 10 days, after that you are required to register the program and
pay a very reasonable fee of just $20.00.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = StyList is for Ventura Publisher users who have a lot
of work and not much time. StyList edits Ventura Publisher style
sheets directly, letting you set up important tag attributes in one,
fast operation. StyList will work with either Ventura version 1.1
or 2.0 style sheets.
@ARTICLE PAL = Even if editing is not required, StyList provides a
convenient way to see key tag attributes in summary form without needing
to enter Ventura Publisher.
@ARTICLE PAL = Don't know if all the tags in a style sheet are needed
by a text file? StyList can show you which style tags are actually
in use.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = StyList can operate from any floppy or rigid drive,
a good place for it is the sub-directory in which you keep the majority
of your Ventura chapters. It can also be placed in your root directory
or any directory that is currently defined in your path statement. When
loading StyList, enter STYLIST plus the style sheet you wish to edit
or examine. You may put any valid DOS drive/path and filename on
the commandline like this:
@ARTICLE PAL =
@BYLINE = <F2P9B%14>STYLIST C:\WYSIWYG\JAN89-2<F255P255D%0>
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = This would load the JAN89-2.STY style sheet and display
all associated tag names currently defined in this style sheet. The
screen display will look like this:

@ARTICLE PAL = You can now select any tag name by using your mouse
or cursor keys to highlight the desired tag. (StyList will check
for the presence of a mouse driver such as MOUSE.COM or MOUSE.SYS
and if found, will display a mouse cursor on the screen.) Hit your
<B><<ENTER>><D> key or press the right mouse button to examine the major
attributes of the selected tag.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = The <MI>Tag Edit Window<D> will now be displayed showing
you the most frequently changed items from the ``Paragraph'' pull-down
menu. You can use the cursor keys or mouse to navigate from field
to field. To change the value of any item selected simply hit the
<B><<ENTER>><D> key or right button on the mouse. Any item in this
window can be changed.

@ARTICLE PAL = You can edit the tag name, or completely rename it,
subject to the following three rules: (1) You cannot rename the default
tag, Body Text. (2) Tag names must conform to standards set by Ventura,
e.g. up to thirteen characters in length. (3) If you create a new
name that already appears in the tag list, an error message will be
displayed.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = The <B>FONT<D> line displays the typeface and attributes
that make up this tag's font. With <B>FONT<D> selected, hit <B><<ENTER>><D>

@ARTICLE PAL = You can also change the font size, attributes, colors,
spacing, hyphenation, line breaks, and anything else that is listed
on the screen. I don't have enough room to go into detail on all
of these features, suffice it to say that this is a real handy utility
and the price is certainly right! The file is called <B>STYLIST.ARC<D>
and is currently available for download from the DataCOM Super Systems
or the Ventura Professional Forum BBS. <188>

BBS, send $25.00 to Kerry S. Hauptli, P.O. Box 110355, Carrollton,

and enjoy this great utility!!)<D>

@SUB TITLES = DTP Magazines
@PAL JUST = <MI>First let me say that I have thoroughly enjoyed all
the past WYSIWYG! magazines that you have distributed, keep up the
good work! Besides your magazine, what other desktop publishing magazines
can you recommend to be worthwhile to us Ventura users?<D>
@PAL JUST = <MI>Frank Smith <197> Providence, RI<D>
@PAL JUST = There are quite a few magazines claiming to be for desktop
publishers. Of the current crop, I find the best reading in <BI>Ventura
Professional!<D> and <BI>Publish!<D> magazines.
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = Ventura Professional! magazine is published by the Ventura
Publisher Users Group, 7502 Aaron Place, San Jose, CA 95139. Single
membership and a subscription to the magazine costs $36.00 per year. They
also have corporate memberships available for U.S. businesses at a
lower ``group'' rate.
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = The Ventura Professional! magazine is created entirely
with Ventura Publisher and is a ``show and tell'' magazine like the
WYSIWYG! with many good tips and tricks per issue.
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = Publish! magazine is a professionally typeset magazine
partly created by Pagemaker, Adobe Illustrator, Freehand, and Fontographer.
Publish! carries good articles relating to both IBM-PC and Apple Macintosh
desktop publishing. There are many good product reviews of both software
and hardware and lots of slick color ads for all the popular manufacturers.
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = Publish! is published by PCW Communications, Inc., 501
Second St., San Francisco, CA 94107 and costs $39.90 for 12 issues. You
can get an introductory subscription for only $23.95 if you use one
of the coupons found in any issue of Publish! magazine.
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST =
@SUB TITLES = Ventura Books
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = <MI>I have just upgraded to Ventura 2.0 and want to learn
all of its new features. What book(s) do you recommend to help me
over the ``rough'' spots not covered by the manual?<D>
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = <MI>Betsy Wilfords <197> Tallahassee, FL<D>
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = Probably one of the best books on Ventura 2.0 would be
Ted Nace's <BI>Ventura Tips and Tricks, 2nd Edition<D>. John Meyer,
President of Ventura Software calls this book ``the most complete
reference for anyone serious about using Ventura Publisher.''
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = You can get your copy by sending $22.95 plus $3.00 shipping
and handling to Peachpit Press, 1085 Keith Ave., Berkeley, CA 94708;
(415) 527-8555. Visa, MC, and CODs accepted.
@SUB TITLES = EPS Images
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = <MI><N>I have downloaded and printed several of your WYSIWYG!
magazines and marvel at the hi-resolution encapsulated Postscript
(EPS) images that you use on the covers. Where do you find these
EPS files? I've seen some on your board for download but have never
seen any on other DTP boards that I call.<D>
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = <MI>Jack Grimes <197> Los Angeles, CA<D>
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = <N>Most of the EPS image files that I use originate as
Compuserve GIF files collected from many other BBS systems around
the country. I use the InSet System's utility called HiJaak to convert
these 256-color EGA resolution images into encapsulated Postscript
images. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new 1.1 version
as it will allow me to convert these GIFs into gray-scaled TIF format. Ventura
2.0 will be able to further manipulate the gray-scaled image for even
more spectacular-looking front covers.
@PAL JUST =
@SUB TITLES = HP Font Installation
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = <MI>I wish I had the money to buy a Postscript laser printer
but am stuck with a HP Laserjet+ printer and want to use more fonts. I
have read in the Ventura manual about installing new fonts and creating
WIDth tables, but frankly, this is beyond me. Is there an easier
way to install fonts and create width tables? I see that you have
lots of HP soft fonts on the BBS for download<N>and I would like to
try some of them with Ventura. Got an easy way for a lazy guy?<D>
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = <MI>George Harris <197> Phoenix, AZ<D>
@PAL JUST =
@PAL JUST = The easiest way I've found to install HP soft fonts into
Ventura is with SoftCraft's <BI>WYSIfonts<D> program. WYSIfonts
will search a specified directory for HP soft fonts, list them, then
allow you to pick the ones you want to install. You just need to
tell it what the name of the new WID file will be and what size screen
fonts you want created. It will then create the VFM (Ventura Font
Metric) file for each font file, create the requested screen fonts,
create the WID file, and place them all in your \VENTURA directory. All
you need to do now is load up Ventura and pull down the <MI>Options<D>
menu and choose <MI>Add/Remove Fonts<D> and merge the new WID table
with your existing OUTPUT.WID. It doesn't get much easier then this!
