latest version of the program along with printed documentation,
phone support, and notification of new programs and versions. You
will be given a discount on subsequent purchases of our other
programs. Later updates will be reasonable, based primarily on
their cost.
Getting Started:
We first recommend that you create a new directory for this program
and place all of Desk Commando's files here.
To execute the program, type DESK at the DOS prompt. If you cannot
read the screen clearly at this point, press ESCAPE to exit. In
this case, try again by typing: DESK -c
at the DOS prompt. This turns off color support.
We currently support two different modes of operation, menu-driven
and memory resident. Under either mode, another program can be run
while Desk Commando is in memory. To "pop-back" to Desk Commando
from either mode, press the ALT-SHIFT-D keys simultaneously.
The menu-driven mode is the mode available when run normally. In
this mode, programs may be executed from the defined menu or through
th DOS shell interface. The memory resident option is available by
typing: DESK -r
at the DOS prompt. This then displays the customary DOS prompt,
from which you can run any command you normally do from this point.
To "pop back" to Desk Commando, press the ALT-SHIFT-D keys. When run
in this mode, the user-defined menus are not available. To remove
Desk Commando completely from memory, press CTRL-U while at the Desk
Commando main menu.
An important note: If you intend to use the Disk features,
available under F4-Disk Services, we recommend that you take normal
precautions. The most important one is to make sure that you have
backed up all material that you can't afford to lose. If you intend
to use the disk optimization feature, you must first uninstall all
copy-protected software on the disk. This is due to the varying
methods used by various companies in protecting their software.
Another important point to remember is that we provide 3 different
speeds of optimization. SAFE is extremely slow, possibly taking all
night, but if a power surge or outage occurs while optimizing, only a
minimal amount of damage will occur, at most one file can be lost.
FAST, on the other hand, is much faster, but if a power fluctuation
occurs, much more damage can be sustained, possibly resulting in the
loss of the disk's contents. So I say again, PLEASE back-up your
disk before using this. This program has been tested on many
different machines and configurations with no problems whatsoever.
Another hint: When unerasing a file, if at first you don't succeed,
delete the file and try to put it together by hand (if it was a text
file). If you are attempting to unerase a file on a floppy disk, it
probably would also be smart to use the DOS DISKCOPY command to make
an exact copy of the disk where the lost file was located before
trying to resurrect it, so if you make a mistake you have another
copy to try again with.
When your disk has been used a lot, it becomes fragmented, which
means the contents of your files is strewn out all over the disk.
This makes unerasing a file very difficult. If you optimize your
disk regularly, this process unfragments your files and makes it
much easier to recover them if something happens. DO NOT optimize
your disk before recovering a deleted file, however. The
optimization process removes all deleted files from the directory,
so once a disk has been optimized, all deleted files are gone and
cannot be unerased.
The Patch editor will modify either a file or the disk unit. This
can be a very dangerous utility if you do not know what you are
doing.
