COMMON ERRORS REPORTED FROM SYSOPS TRYING TO RUN BIS AND THEIR SOLUTIONS
There are several common errors that folks run into when trying to get BIS up
and running. Most errors involve the BIS.CNF file, so if it won't work,
check that first.
1. If BIS refuses to run at all and all that happens when an OS command
is given is that the screen blanks and returns to the BBS program without
making an entry in the BIS.LOG file (located in the same directory from
which you run BIS.EXE) the problem is most likely a memory problem (not
enough) or a conflict with another program...perhaps a TSR program.
2. Paths...You should have a PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
pointing the way to COMMAND.COM (probably in your root directory) as well
as to BIS.EXE and FGREP.COM. Best to keep FGREP.COM in the same subdirect-
ory as BIS.EXE and best to keep both in the same subdirectory as the BBS
program...see the BIS documentation for more information.
3. Any error in line 80 reported in your BIS.LOG file indicates a problem
with the BIS.CNF file. Check and double-check to see that it has sections
with exactly 6 lines with the 6th line being a series of ten dashes (not
the underline character).
4. Any error 53 indicates that BIS cannot find a file it is looking for.
Check the BIS.CNF file for the appropriate subdirectories to point the way
to the file.
