INTRODUCTION
TO
THE BBS INTERFACE SYSTEM
(BIS)
Welcome to BIS (version 2.0)! BIS is a powerful OS interface which allows
users of the WA7MBL BBS program to interface to other programs, DOS
commands and BAT files you, the sysop, may want to make available to them.
It allows users to run any number of different external programs which you
specify. In its original form in versions 1.2 and 1.3, the only external
program allowed was a search program. The older versions of BIS worked in
conjunction with FGREP.COM to allow users to search BBS subdirectories and
databases contained on your BBS computer for files containing information
they may wish to download or for information stored in databases or lists.
In version 2.0, the SEARCH function is fully retained and improved, but
you will find the ability to call other external programs may be just what
you were waiting for.
The SEARCH function, which is partially internal to BIS, allows users to
find the information they are looking for hidden deep within the cryptic
file names of your BBS files. In addition, if files are properly set
up with a SUBJECT: line, users can search all files in a particular
subdirectory and obtain a complete list of the subjects of the files
contained in the subdirectory. This makes the tedious and frustrating
job of maintaining subject lists and index files of your BBS files
totally unnecessary.
Please take the time to read the documentation for FGREP.COM to under-
stand its operation and definitely read both documentation files for
BIS. Also included on this disk are archived files of K4NGC, Don
Bennett's excellent compilation of World Wide Digipeaters and BBS's
formatted in a useful way for BIS searches. You can de-arch the files
using PKXARC.EXE which is included on the MBL BBS distribution disk.
ALSO....PLEASE read the "PRECAUTIONS" section carefully in BIS.DOC,
the original documentation file for previous versions.
For those who receive this program via U.S. mail directly from W9LZQ,
my distribution fund is running low. Postage, mailers and disks are
fairly cheap on an individual basis, but when doing multiple mailings
of the program, the cost can get a little out of hand. I would
appreciate a small dondation to cover these costs, but please, no more
than $5.00. For those who receive the program by other means, no
donation is requested, but PLEASE, EVERYONE remember to register your
program. It only costs 25 cents to do it and assures that you will
be notified of further updates. In addition, if sysops come up with
some real nice applications to run as external programs, we will
distribute them to those that have registered, assuming the distribution
fund is "in the black".
For those who have previously registered either version 1.2 or 1.3,
please re-register version 2.0. I would like to get an update on
your equipment and comments after having used the previous versions.
