@ARTICLE PAL = Adobe Systems Incorporated has announced the development
of the third package in the Adobe Type Library Publishing Pack series. Announced
in January, the Adobe Type Library Publishing Packs are packages consisting
of a collection of typefaces specially selected to improve specific
types of printed communication. <BI>Publishing Pack 3: Presentations<D>,
the newest package released, is designed to help the user in enhancing
business presentations such as slide shows, flip charts, and proposals.
@ARTICLE PAL = Each Publishing Pack is authored by a leading expert
in typography and design. The author both selects the appropriate
typefaces and has written design guides and tips which are presented
in a booklet form. The new Presentations Publishing Pack is authored
by Allan Haley, executive vice president of International Typeface
Corporation (ITC) and noted type design author and educator.
@ARTICLE PAL = Publishing Packs for <BI>Newsletters<D> and for <BI>Forms
& Schedules<D> are the other packages comprising the Adobe Type Library
Publishing Pack series. In addition to Publishing Packs, the Adobe
Type Library offers a total of 56 individual typeface packages. All
of the typefaces are available for both IBM PC and Apple Macintosh
computers.
@ARTICLE PAL = Publishing Pack 3: Presentations is now available through
all authorized Adobe dealers and retails for $475.

@PRODUCTS = Hewlett-Packard's New Laserjet IID
@ARTICLE PAL = Hewlett-Packard Company has introduced the <BI>HP Laserjet
IID<D> printer. The new printer complements the HP Laserjet Series
II printer by providing twice the paper capacity (400 sheets), two
paper trays, <B>duplex (two-sided) printing<D>, and a new accessory
for automatically printing up to 50 envelopes. Each HP Laserjet IID
printer also comes with 24 fonts.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = Duplex printing allows business offices to save money
on paper and mailing costs, and to conserve document filing space
by printing on both sides of a page. Finance, banking, accounting,
insurance, legal, and other offices that create and file numerous
documents will find duplex printing useful. Offices that already
use duplex printing now can rely on their printer instead of on photocopiers
or outside printing services.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = HP Laserjet IID printer users can set up the duplex-printed
page for different binding options by using the front control panel
or supporting software. Pages can be printed for binding on the left
edge to read like a book, or at the top to read like a calendar.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = The optional automatic-envelope feeder serves as a
third-input source to the printer without replacing one of the paper
trays. The printer can pull paper consecutively from both trays and
the envelope-feeder, providing pre-sorted, ready-to-mail documents. The
automatic envelope feeder holds up to 50 envelopes.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = Twenty-four fonts come with the HP Laserjet IID printer. Fourteen
fonts are internal to the printer and 10 come on the HP 92290S2 font
cartridge that is shipped with every printer. All existing HP Laserjet
font cartridges and soft fonts work with the new printer. Like the
HP Laserjet 2000 printer, the HP Laserjet IID printer can rotate any
font to print in either portrait or landscape orientation.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = Like the HP Laserjet Series II printer, the HP Laserjet
IID printer works with all of the popular PC software packages.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@STANDOUT = Duplex printing allows business offices to save money
on paper
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = The HP Laserjet IID printer comes with 640k of standard
memory. The user can upgrade this with 1, 2, or 4-megabyte memory
boards to expand this to 4.6Mb of memory.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = The HP Laserjet IID printer with a one-year warranty
is $4,295 and is available immediately through HP authorized dealers
and HP's direct sales force. The optional envelope feeder is $350.

@PAGE RIGHT = WYSIWYG! -- Page 2
@ARTICLE PAL = Intel Corp. demonstrated a printing enhancement system
at Comdex that allows HP Laserjet Series II printers to produce photographic-quality
halftones and speeds up printer output by as much as 600 percent.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = Scheduled to begin shipping in December 1988, the <BI>Visual
Edge<D> printing enhancement system takes the printer's capability
to print half-tones from 19 levels of gray to 64 levels at 70-line-per-inch
(lpi) resolution <197> a more than 300 percent improvement over the
standard Laserjet II output. At a resolution of 100 lpi, it can reproduce
37 levels of gray.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = Intel's Personal Computer Enhancement Operation developed
the system. It consists of a half-height board for AT-class 286 and
386 PCs, an add-in board for the Laserjet II, a video adapter cable
to connect them, and software.
@ARTICLE PAL = The software and card in the PC first separate the
graphics data from the text and font information, assembling the graphics
in expanded memory on the PC. They then send text and font information
to the Laserjet II over a standard serial or parallel cable, while
graphics travel over the video cable at 1.8 mbps, speeding throughput.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = Halftones are reproduced by printing more dots per
inch at a higher density. By varying the size and density of the
dots, the printer mimics the halftone process of photographing screened
art.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = The system is based on the Intel Image Processing Interface,
a programming specification that lets the Visual Edge system translate
photographic image data from graphics applications into halftones,
maintaining the complex levels of gray.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = ``We see it as extremely important to both Pagemaker
and Snapshot,'' said Mark Craemer, Aldus' Snapshot product marketing
manager. ``Speed is very important, but the quality of the images
is phenomenal. The system makes the printer a great deal faster.''
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = In a test ``one TIFF image took about 2-1/2 minutes
to print on a regular Laserjet II,'' Craemer said. ``Using the Visual
Edge system, it only took about 15 seconds.''
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = The Visual Edge system will cost $695 and requires
an AT-class 80286 or 80386 PC with a minimum of 1 megabyte of expanded
memory (2 megabytes recommended) and a 512k Laserjet II printer.
@PRODUCTS = SX-1000 ``Epson Printer'' Image Scanner <197> $249.95
@ARTICLE PAL = Desktop Technology Corp. recently announced a product
that replaces the removable printer head on most Epson printers, converting
them into gray-scale image scanners.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = The product, called the <BI>SX-1000<D>, snaps into
the printhead carriage of any Epson FX, MX, or RX and most LQ printer
models. The scanning head connects to the PC game port through a
card supplied with the SX-1000 package.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = Once installed, the SX-1000 converts the Epson printer
into a bidirectional scanner with a maximum resolution of 216 vertical
and 300 horizontal dots per inch. The scanner supports eight levels
of gray, or black and white for line drawings, the company said.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = The package includes menu-driven scanning software
for setting the dimensions of the area to be scanned, controlling
image contrast, saving images as PCX files, and editing gray-scale
dither patterns.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = <BI>Pizazz<D>, which is a memory-resident utility from
Application Techniques Inc., also comes with the product. Pizazz
lets users crop and rotate scanned images, save them as TIFF file,
or print them on most graphics printers.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = The SX-1000 package costs $249.95 and began shipping
last November.
@ARTICLE PAL =
@ARTICLE PAL = The SX-1000 enhancement is similar in concept to the
Thunderscan/ImageWriter unit that has been available to Apple Macintosh
users for several years now.
