- DRI ANNOUNCES GEM ARTLINE
-
- Monterey, CA -- Digital Research, Inc. of Monterey, California and CCP
- Software in Germany have announced GEM Artline -- a desktop publishing
- solution for creating intricate graphic effects, many of which were
- previously impossible with PC-based computer systems and printers
- without high-level page description languages.
-
- GEM Artline creates eye-catching text effects needed for headlines,
- logos and letterheads as well as illustrations which match the quality
- of designer-created artwork. GEM Artline provides a comprehensive and
- extremely powerful set of drawing tools. A design can be created by
- freehand drawing or by simply tracing a scanned image presented on the
- screen. Drawings and text can be extensively modified and enhanced --
- copied, scaled, skewed, merged with other elements, colored, shaded,
- rotated and mirrored.
-
- Advanced high-speed Bezier curve drawing and smoothing algorithms are
- supported to produce extremely intricate objects. Provisions are
- provided for breaking Bezier curves and merging multiple objects
- together. With Gem Artline, the curve fit and edit functions allow
- designers to operate on and edit the points, tangents, and gradients of
- the whole curve or a portion of the curve.
-
- GEM Artline includes a library of ready-made clip art and provides a
- choice of eight type styles. GEM Artlines Symbol file previewer allows
- the designer to display and select clip art files from the drawing
- screen. It also includes the Bitstream Installation Kit which provides
- an additional typeface -- Charter, and opens access to an extensive
- range of quality typefaces via Bitstream Fontware packs.
-
- GEM Artline acts as a graphic workbench, supporting the two key
- elements of graphic design -- typography and drawing. Typography is the
- art and craft of producing visually exciting text and headlines on a
- page. GEM Artline's high-quality typefaces can be treated as drawing
- objects, allowing effects such as rotation, skewing, shadowing,
- patterning and scaling to any size. Typefaces from 1 to 999 point are
- supported.
-
- Images can be imported from popular painting and scanning programs and
- turned into object-oriented graphics. GEM Artline allows graphics to be
- saved in formats used with Aldus PageMaker, Xerox Ventura Publisher,
- GEM Desktop Publisher and others.
-
- Image file formats, including .IMG, .PCX, and TIFF are fully supported.
- Both .GEM and .EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) object-oriented formats
- are supported. Output from GEM Artline is supported by 35mm slide
- services such as MagiCorp which offer 4000 line slide resolution. GEM
- Artline files are resolution independent -- the entire range of output
- devices from dot matrix printers to high resolution image setters are
- fully supported.
-
- GEM Artline requires 640K memory and hard disk and mouse or graphic
- sketchpad. All screen and printer devices for the GEM environment are
- supported. High-level page description languages such as PostScript are
- not required to print GEM Artline files.
-
- Gem Artline runs on PC DOS, MS DOS version 3.0 or higher, DR DOS and
- Concurrent DOS operating environments. Expanded memory (EMS or EEMS) is
- required to provide image tracing and enhanced font and image
- buffering. Minimum expanded memory to use these features is 512K.
-
- GEM Artline was developed by CCP Software in conjunction with Digital
- Reasearch. For more information, contact Digital Research Inc. at Box
- DRI, Monterey, CA 93942 or telephone (408) 649-3896.
