  13. Welcome to Searchlight BBS!
  14.  
  15. The enclosed programs and documentation constitute a ShareWare/Test Drive 
  16. version of the Searchlight BBS System.  THIS IS NOT FREE SOFTWARE, nor is it 
  17. in the public domain, although we do encourage you to "share" this software by
  18. distributing unmodified copies to friends and associates.  
  19.  
  20. Two versions of Searchlight BBS are available: this shareware version, and an 
  21. Extended Version, described below.  If you decide to use this copy of Search- 
  22. light, please register with us; registration costs only $35.  The extended 
  23. version, including all printed manuals plus support, costs only $70 for the 
  24. single-user version or $95 for the multinode, multiuser version (now includes 
  25. a full-featutred multinode chat facility).  In either case, use the handy 
  26. order form at the end of this file.  Please note that IN NO CASE may you use 
  27. this software without paying for it!  Thank you for your support.

  30. What Is SEARCHLIGHT BBS?
  31.  
  32.   Searchlight BBS is a full featured bulletin board system containing public 
  33. message boards, private mail, a full screen text editor, a complete file 
  34. transfer system, and a powerful DOORS interface.  It can be customized with 
  35. text or ANSI messages, custom menus, color selections, etc.  A full menu of 
  36. SYSOP utilities is included.  But most importantly, Searchlight BBS does away 
  37. with the archaic user interfaces found on most BBS systems, and replaces them 
  38. with a fast, convenient, user-friendly command system (including 5800 words of 
  39. online help text).
  40.   Searchlight is the result of more than three years of programming effort.  
  41. In short, it is the fastest, easiest to use BBS software you can own.

  46.   The disks or archive file(s) in which you recieved SEARCHLIGHT BBS should

  66. Make sure you have all these files before you begin.  SLBBS.DOC contains all 
  67. the documentation neccesary to setup and run Searchlight BBS; be sure to print 
  68. and read this file.  For experienced BBS and MS-DOS users, the file QUICK.DOC 
  69. contains abbreviated instructions for getting Searchlight BBS up and running as
  70. fast as possible.
  71.   Please note that due to space constraints, the last six files will sometimes 
  72. be distributed on a seperate disk or as a seperate archive.  If these files 
  73. are missing, you will need to obtain them from the place you received your copy 
  74. of SLBBS (all files are available on Searchlight Software's BBS).  
  75.   The documentation files are written with the PcWrite(TM) word processing 
  76. software and can easily be printed using the PcWrite "PR" printing program.

  79. Distribution/Ordering Information
  80.  
  81.   If you decide to use this ShareWare version of Searchlight BBS, or if you 
  82. decide to order the Extended Version of Searchlight, please use the order form
  83. below.  The SHAREWARE VERSION *ONLY* of this program may be copied and 
  84. distributed to friends, associates, etc.  If you charge a fee for distri-
  85. bution, it should be no more than $6 (Six Dollars).  YOU MAY NOT distribute 
  86. copies of Searchlight BBS which have been modified in any way, including 
  87. the removal of any file or files from the package in which you received it.  
  88.   Shareware registration ($35) entitles you to use this version of SLBBS, and 
  89. any subsequent Shareware releases.  In return for your registration fee, we 
  90. will ship you a copy of the latest SLBBS Shareware version or, if you are 
  91. already using the latest version, we'll ship you a disk containing some 
  92. utility and DOOR programs you can use with your system. Your cancelled check 
  93. or money order is your receipt.

  99. Why pay the extra money for our "extended" versions?  Here's a quick look 
  100. at some of the features you get.  Please contact us if you'd like further 
  101. details and information (or call our BBS for an online demo).

  104.   *   Expanded Command Interface - includes a new "Lotus 1-2-3" style command
  105.       interface, expanded online help messages, and a "Novice/Expert" help
  106.       level switch for each user. Hot Keys let you enter commands without 
  107.       waiting for command prompts.

  109.   *   Multitask/Multiuser Support - Searchlight Extended will support multiple
  110.       users in multitasking/network environments. Up to 99 nodes are 
  111.       supported. We include full record-locking routines for data integrity 
  112.       and a powerful buffered multinode Chat command.

  114.   *   High Speed Modem Support - Supports high speed modems with hardware
  115.       flow control, and locked DTE data rate up to 38,400 baud. Includes
  116.       setup instructions for US Robotics HST 9600 baud modems.

  118.   *   Message System Enhancements - includes "Reply-To" fields in messages,
  119.       full message threading facility, search commands, backward read, etc.

  121.   *   New user options including screen size (can be set to zero to disable
  122.       "more" prompting) and visible subboard/available subboard lists. Plus 
  123.       many more sysop preference switches and pathnames.

  125.   *   Enhanced message editor features more commands and more WordStar(TM) 
  126.       compatibility with ^Q and ^K command prefixes. New features let you read
  127.       messages from within the editor, even load the text of an original
