How to make embedded cross-references
=====================================
Along with the margin note way <file5> of displaying cross-references,
sometimes referred to as biblical, talmudic, or postil <file14> styles of
text, you can also use a format called "EMBEDDED" references.
For example, the previous paragraph includes two references to other files
in one sentence of text.
In the embedded format, text remains as the most important unit, with
branches to other files as secondary consideration. As a result, sequence
and linearity is maintained.
In contrast, the margin note format <file5> emphasizes branching points in
the text. Which is the better format?
Given the capabilities of HOUDINI to build complex branching networks, I
recommend that each ASCII file contains a single idea unit (frame) and that
you use PC-Hypertext to link these idea units. The advantages of this
format are:
Faster network building... Tools exist for linking/merging file networks
Easier reading............ Each unit of text answers a single point
In contrast, putting angle-bracket branching in your ASCII files is a
word-processor intensive task -- slow, tedious, and prone to error on the
cross-references.
