There are a group of files containing a shareware product called
SCOUT. The files are:
SCOUT.000
CALLSCT.COM
CONFIG.COM
RUNFILE.COM
SCOUT.COM
SCOUT requires 128K for DOS 2.0 or 2.11, 256K for DOS 3.0 or higher.
You need a 100% IBM PC/AT compatible with DOS 2.0 or higher.
These files do not contain any documentation. SCOUT.COM is the actual
program. SCOUT.000 contains the windows used by SCOUT. CONFIG.COM
configures SCOUT, if you wish to change atributes. RUNFILE.COM allows
SCOUT to execute files. It must be in the root directory of the disk
from which SCOUT is initially loaded. CALLSCT.COM allows SCOUT to be
activated by a batch file.
To configure SCOUT, run CONFIG SCOUT.COM. The program will run through
a series of menus. Press the key for each desired option, you do not
need to press <RETURN>. You may run SCOUT by typing SCOUT at your MS-DOS
> prompt, or from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If you put it in AUTOEXEC.BAT
it should be the last TSR called. Once run, SCOUT is called by Alt F10
(or whatever hot key you have reconfigured), and abolished by ESC. SCOUT
is of most use to hard-disk users.
To tell you about SCOUT, let me quote from an upcoming PJ minireview:

An Editorial comment. Shareware is not free. If you try the program
and like it, send John his justly deserved $30. If you continue to
use it without paying, you are guilty of theft. SCOUT is well worth
the modest fee. All of these files are copyright John J. Newlin, 1986.
You must maintain copyright information on any files you distribute, and
may not distribute these files for profit.

Some errata and addenda:
Note: The following information pertains to the user's manual supplied with
SCOUT.
UNDOCUMENTED COMMAND:
Alt-D is a command not documented in the user's manual. Pressing the
key combination Alt-d will bring up a window that displays the free
disk space (in bytes) for each logical drive in the system and a
sum total of all free space in the system.
MANUAL ERRATA:
Paragraph 2.1 (page 21) - The information in the tip box pertaining
to the Tandy 1000 is not implemented in this version.
Paragraph 2.2.2 (pages 28-31) describes how to load SCOUT using
command line parameters to specify the maximum number of files
per directory, maximum number of directories on a disk, and file
buffer size. The following syntax must be used on the command
line in order for this feature to work properly:
SCOUT f200 d35 b4096
where f200 specifies the maximum number of files, d35 specifies the
maximum number of directories, and b4096 specifies the buffer size.
The information in the manual omits the requirement to place the
upper or lower case character f (files), d (directories), or
b (buffer) immediately preceeding the value desired.
Note of disclaimer:
These files may not be commercially distributed by anyone. Every effort has
been made to assure that the program files are correct and complete. No
guarantee, express or implied, is offered as to the correctness of the files,
nor to the fitness of the programs for any purpose whatsoever.
