From the twisted mind of David Wolfe:
Thank you very much for purchasing Expanding Your BBS. I hope you feel
you have gotten your money's worth from the book and this CD.
On this CD, you will find 20 directories full of files. In compiling
these files for distribution, I attempting to gather the most recent
ones I could get my hands on. But, as with all things related to the
BBS biz, things rarely stay current. Most of the files on this CD are
either 92, 93 or 94 files. Some of the files related to GAP are from
1995. Let's face it, I'm a little more current on GAP stuff than I am
on other BBS software since I run a GAP BBS myself.
Each directory on this CD contains a FILES.BBS description file of every
file in that directory. These FILES.BBS files can be imported by most
BBS software. These files adhere to the standard FILES.BBS format.
Consult your BBS software docs if you are not hip on importing FILES.BBS
files.
In compiling this collection of files, I found a number of them did not
have FILE_ID.DIZ description files in them. When creating the
description lists for the archives I chose to include, I used
descriptions from existing FILE_ID.DIZ files within each archive (if
present). When a FILE_ID.DIZ file was not present, a generic
description was used. I appologize for the number of files that have
generic descriptions but all are worth having. Describing by hand the
number of files without FILE_ID.DIZ files would have been tough for me
to do. If you ever upload to other BBSs or are a software author
yourself, do yourself a favor and create a FILE_ID.DIZ file for your
program. It lets the world know what you have created!
Each directory also contains 4Dos description files. If you are a
fellow 4Dos user, you will be able to see the file descriptions of each
file when you do a DIR command within any of the CD directories. The
4Dos description files are formatted to the latest 4Dos version
standards (as of 2/95 - version 5.5 - revision C). This description
maximum is 511 characters. If you are using an older version of 4Dos,
fear not! You will still be shown partial descriptions (up to your
current version maximum description length) when you do a DIR command in
a CD directory. Version 5.5 of 4Dos can be found in the \4Dos directory.
In the root directory of the CD there is a file named GAPFB.ZIP. This
archive file contains all of the necessary GAP file base data files and
menu files for a 6.x GAP BBS. If you are a fellow GAP sysop, you can
use these files directly and eliminate the need for importing the
FILES.BBS description files. Consult the README.GAP file within this
archive for more details.
The sample RIP menu file - FMENU.RIP is written to work with a GAP BBS.
When a user clicks on one of the directory buttons of this menu, a
directory number is sent to the host. These numbers range from 1 to 20
(top to bottom, left to right). This menu also has 4 command buttons
for showing All directories (a^M), Downloading (d^M), Relisting the
menu (l^M) and doing nothing (^M). Feel free to use a text editor to
alter the host command strings each of the menu buttons sends to the
host when clicked if you need to alter the menu for use with your own
BBS software.
That's about all there is to say. Have fun with all the goodies you now
have. I have certainly found them very useful.
