  33. UPDATING
  34. --------

  36.    If you are updating Falcon 3.0, run the Falcon 3.04
  37.    update program. Type "F3UPDATE" at the DOS prompt.
  38.    This will update any version of Falcon 3.0 to version 
  39.    3.04.
  40.    
  41.    WARNING: You should complete any campaigns you
  42.    intend to finish before updating. The Falcon 3.04
  43.    update process deletes all existing squadron files.
  44.  
  45.    OPERATION: FIGHTING TIGER WARNING: Do not attempt to
  46.    install Operation: Fighting Tiger after updating to
  47.    version 3.04! If you buy Operation: Fighting Tiger
  48.    after you update to version 3.04, DELETE EVERYTHING
  49.    in your FALCON3 directory and reinstall from scratch
  50.    (Falcon 3.0, then Operation: Fighting Tiger, then
  51.    the 3.04 update). See the update instructions below.

  53.  Who can update?
  54.    Any Falcon 3.0 owner can update to version 3.04.
  55.    You are encouraged to distribute copies of the Falcon
  56.    3.04 update disk to other Falcon 3.0 owners.
  57.  
  58.  Should I update?
  59.    Yes, if you have any of the following versions of
  60.    Falcon 3.0: Falcon 3.0 (no suffix), Falcon 3.0a,
  61.    Falcon 3.0c, Falcon 3.0d, Falcon 3.0e, Falcon 3.01
  62.    (Operation: Fighting Tiger) Falcon 3.01.1, (Operation:
  63.    Fighting Tiger update) Falcon 3.02, Falcon 3.02.1 or
  64.    Falcon 3.03.
  65.  
  66.    Note also that Falcon 3.04 is required in order to
  67.    communicate with Hornet 1.01, MiG-29 1.03 or Falcon 
  68.    3.04. Earlier versions will fail to communicate 
  69.    properly with Hornet 1.01, MiG-29 1.02 and Falcon 
  70.    3.04.

  72. WHAT IS ON THIS DISK

  75.  F3UPDATE.EXE
  76.    This disk contains the Falcon 3.04 update. The
  77.    F3UPDATE.EXE program performs the 3.04 update for
  78.    Falcon 3.0 and Operation: Fighting Tiger.
  79.  
  80.  F3README.TXT  
  81.    The Falcon 3.04 update program will also place a 
  82.    file called "F3README.TXT" into your FALCON3 
  83.    directory. This text file contains important tips 
  84.    on running Falcon 3.0 as well as a complete listing 
  85.    of all features added to Falcon 3.0 from its 
  86.    original release through version 3.02.
  87.  
  88. FALCON 3.04 UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS
  89. -------------------------------
  90.  
  91. NOTE: If you downloaded this update, you must copy it
  92.       onto a floppy disk before proceeding. The updater
  93.       is designed to work from a floppy and will fail
  94.       if you try to run it from your hard drive.
  95.  
  96.    1) Install Falcon 3.0 according to the instructions
  97.       provided with that game (unless it is already
  98.       installed).
  99.  
  100.    2) Install Operation: Fighting Tiger, if you have
  101.       it, according to the instructions provided with
  102.       that game (unless it is already installed).
  103.  
  104.    3) At the A: or B: prompt (depending on where the 
  105.       update disk is), type "F3UPDATE."
  106.  
  107.    4) On the screen which appears, you will be given
  108.       the choice to "Continue" or "Quit." Select
  109.       "Continue" to go on.
  110.  
  111.    5) A warning appears, telling you that all your
  112.       squadrons will be deleted if you continue. You
  113.       are given the choice to "Continue" or "Quit."
  114.       Select "Continue" to go on with the Falcon 3.04
  115.       update.
  116.  
  117.    6) The Falcon 3.04 update program now searches your
  118.       hard drive for Falcon 3.0. When it finds Falcon 
  119.       3.0, it says "Falcon 3.0 found in:" followed by 
  120.       the path to the directory containing your copy of 
  121.       Falcon 3.0. Edit this path if it is wrong or if 
  122.       you have another copy of Falcon 3.0 you wish to 
  123.       update instead of the one found.
  124.  
  125.    7) At the bottom of the screen are four buttons:
  126.       "Install," "Search," "View" and "Quit." "Quit"
  127.       aborts the Falcon 3.04 update. "View" brings up
  128.       this Read Me file. "Search" continues the search
  129.       for other copies of Falcon 3.0 by checking other
  130.       drives or directories. Select "Install" to
  131.       continue the Falcon 3.04 update.
  132.  
  133.    8) The Falcon 3.04 updater will begin updating
  134.       Falcon 3.0 to version 3.04. You can abort the
  135.       Falcon 3.04 update by pressing CTRL-BREAK.
  136.  
  137.    When the Falcon 3.04 updater is finished, it will
  138.    beep. Press any key to exit to DOS.
  139.  
  140.    Type "CHECKVER" at the DOS prompt. You should see
  141.    the following line (in addition to other
  142.    information, such as whether Operation: Fighting
  143.    Tiger or MiG-29 are installed and how much memory
  144.    you have available).

  154. * Some users reported a problem where the views would
  155.   switch around without any user input. This no longer
  156.   happens.
  157.  
  158. * Serious joystick control and calibration problems
  159.   found in version 1.0 have been fixed. The joystick
  160.   inputs are now linear, and there is a "null zone" of
  161.   20% of the stick's travel. What this means is that
  162.   the plane will react evenly to gradual increases in
  163.   stick pressure, and that slight movement of the stick
  164.   near the center point will not cause the plane to 
  165.   jerk around.
  166.  
  167. * This new version is fully compatible with version 2.0
  168.   of the TM-STICK.COM joystick TSR, developed jointly 
  169.   by Ken "Stinger" Richardson and ThrustMaster. With
  170.   their permission, we have incorporated much of the 
  171.   TM-STICK code into this update. As a result, you do 
  172.   not need to load TM-STICK.COM to fix your joystick 
  173.   problems. If you want the other features of TM-STICK, 
  174.   however, you will still have to load it. After you 
  175.   run this update, TM-STICK.COM will be on your hard 
  176.   drive in the directory that contains Falcon 3.0. See  
  177.   the TM-STICK.TXT file for information on how to use 
  178.   this utility.

  180. * AMRAAMs are now available in communications play.
  181.  
  182. * When you press Ctrl-K (to jettison all stores), you
  183.   will still keep your wingtip missiles, even if they
  184.   are AMRAAMs. In version 1.0, AMRAAMs were jettisoned.

  186. PROGRAM FIXES SINCE FALCON 3.02
  187. -------------------------------

  189. * Several users reported a problem where if you create
  190.   a squadron, take off and return, create another
  191.   squadron, take off and return, then try to fly another
  192.   mission with the first squadron, the game would crash 
  193.   with a message saying "Fatal Error! Cannot Create 
  194.   File!" This was related to the number of planes in a 
  195.   squadron and has been fixed.

  197. PROGRAM FIXES SINCE FALCON 3.0
  198. ------------------------------
  199.  
  200. All the changes from version 3.0 through 3.02 are 
  201. listed in the F3README.TXT file which is placed in your 
  202. Falcon 3.0 directory by the updater. There are many 
  203. significant changes, so read the entire file (we 
  204. recommend printing it out for reference).
  205.  
  206. TROUBLESHOOTING
  207. ---------------
  208.  
  209.    If there are problems with the Falcon 3.04 updater, 
  210.    you will see one of several possible error messages.
  211.    These messages are listed below.
  212.  
  213.  Error messages
  214.    ERROR - NOT ENOUGH CONVENTIONAL MEMORY AVAILABLE
  215.      You do not have enough conventional memory free to
  216.      use the Falcon 3.04 updater. This message is
  217.      extremely unlikely, since the Falcon 3.04 updater
  218.      only requires 250K of free conventional memory to
  219.      run. Refer to your Release Notes and Communications
  220.      Handbook from Falcon 3.0 for tips on managing your
  221.      memory.
  222.  
  223.    ERROR - DISK SPACE NOT AVAILABLE ON DRIVE:
  224.      This message will be followed by the path to the
  225.      drive and directory to which you are attempting to
  226.      update Falcon 3.0. The solution is to make sure
  227.      you have enough free space on your hard drive. The
  228.      Falcon 3.04 update requires 2MB of free disk space. 
  229.      
  230.    ERROR - CANNOT LOCATE FILE (filename) ON DISK
  231.      This message will be followed by the name of
  232.      whatever disk you are trying to install to or
  233.      update from. The word "(filename)" above will be
  234.      replaced by whatever file the Falcon 3.04 updater
  235.      is seeking. This message appears most often when
  236.      the wrong disk is put in the drive. The solution
  237.      is to make sure the update disk is in the drive
  238.      being used.
  239.  
  240.      If you have the update disk in the floppy drive
  241.      and still get this message, write down what file
  242.      it is looking for and call Customer Support at
  243.      (510)522-1164.
  244.  
  245.    ERROR - INVALID VERSION
  246.      This message appears if the Falcon 3.04 updater
  247.      cannot find certain files that should exist in a
  248.      functioning, legitimate copy of Falcon 3.0.
  249.  
  250.      One likely possibility, especially if you have a
  251.      backup copy of FALCON3.EXE, is that the Falcon
  252.      3.04 updater is trying to update to a directory
  253.      that only contains FALCON3.EXE. If this is so, quit
  254.      the Falcon 3.04 update and restart it. When you are
  255.      given the option to edit the path it will update
  256.      to, type in the path to a full working copy of
  257.      Falcon 3.0.
  258.  
  259.      Another possibility is that your FALCON3 directory
  260.      has had some of its files removed. In this case,
  261.      the solution is to quit the Falcon 3.04 updater,
  262.      delete all the files from your FALCON3 directory
  263.      (or whatever directory your copy of Falcon 3.0 is
  264.      in), and re-install Falcon 3.0 (followed by
  265.      Operation: Fighting Tiger if you have it). Then
  266.      run the Falcon 3.04 updater.
  267.  
  268.    DATA ERROR READING DRIVE (drive, usually A: or B:)
  269.      This message appears if there is a disk error on
  270.      your update disk. Call Customer Support at
  271.      (510)522-1164 for a replacement disk.
  272.  
  273.  Manual updating to Falcon 3.04
  274.    If you are having trouble updating to Falcon 3.04,
  275.    you can manually perform the Falcon 3.04 update 
  276.    using one of the following procedures. Follow the 
  277.    instructions appropriate to your setup, as different 
  278.    files are needed depending on what is already 
  279.    installed on your system.
  280.  
  281.    To update to Falcon 3.04 with Falcon 3.0 and 
  282.    Operation: Fighting Tiger already installed:
  283.  
  284.    - Insert the 3.04 update disk in drive A.
  285.    - At the A: prompt, type the following:
  286.        COPY GOPATCH.EXE C:\FALCON3
  287.        COPY 304PATCH.RTP C:\FALCON3
  288.        COPY CHECKOFT.RTP C:\FALCON3
  289.        COPY CHECKVER.COM C:\FALCON3
  290.        COPY ASIAPAT.RTP C:\FALCON3
  291.        COPY F30RESET.EXE C:\FALCON3

  296.    - You will now be at a C:\FALCON3 prompt. Type

  303.    - The update is now complete. Remove the excess
  304.      files from your hard drive by typing the following

  313.    To update to Falcon 3.04 with Falcon 3.0 only
  314.    already installed:

  346. SPECIAL PROBLEMS - ACER AND TSENG OWNERS
  347. ----------------------------------------
  348.  
  349.  There are a couple of special hardware problems which
  350.  have been reported. The first has to do with Acer
  351.  motherboards. The other problem only affects users who
  352.  have a video card with the Tseng ET4000/w32 chipset.
  353.  
  354.  Acer and Acros owners
  355.  ---------------------
  356.   Owners of Acer computers, Acros computers or other
  357.   computers with Acer motherboards using BIOS version
  358.   version 1.2 could not play MiG-29 or Falcon 3.02.
  359.   When either game was run, it would simply freeze
  360.   with a blank screen.
  361.  
  362.   The solution is to use a small TSR (terminate-and-
  363.   stay-resident) program called ACER.COM which we
  364.   created to deal with this incompatibility problem.
  365.   Running this patch will automatically copy ACER.COM
  366.   into your FALCON3 directory.
  367.  
  368.   If you have an Acer with BIOS version 1.2, type
  369.   "ACER" before you run MiG-29 or Falcon 3.04. This
  370.   will load the ACER TSR into memory, where it will
  371.   allow you to play Falcon 3.04 or MiG-29. When
  372.   loaded, ACER.COM takes up 768 bytes (0.8K) of 
  373.   conventional memory. Since MiG-29 requires 603K and
  374.   Falcon 3.04 requires 604K of conventional memory,
  375.   be sure you have enough free RAM for this TSR as well.
  376.  
  377.   When you are done playing, type "ACER U" to unload
  378.   the TSR from memory.
  379.  
  380.  Tseng ET4000/w32 chipset
  381.  ------------------------
  382.   If you have a video card with the Tseng ET4000/w32
  383.   chipset, you may experience problems with frequent
  384.   white flashing in the simulation. You can download a
  385.   specific fix for this video problem from our Customer
  386.   Support BBS at (510)522-8909 or from GEnie, CompuServe
  387.   or America Online.
  388.

  390. --------------------------------
  391. America Online: Press Ctrl-K for "Go to Keyword."
  392.     Then type "SPECTRUM" in the Keyword window. You can
