Welcome to PC Hack Lite, a PC version of the classic UNIX game Hack.
Hack Lite can be played directly from the distribution disk. Before
you play, you must edit the file HACKLITE.CNF to tell the game where
to find files, and define other options. HACKLITE.CNF includes
instructions on the edits required. If you have only 5" low-density
drives, you should put HACKLITE.EXE and HACKLITE.CNF on one disk, and
everything else on another. It's best to have two drives in this case,
or else you'll spend a lot of time swapping disks.
If you have a hard disk, you can install Hack Lite there, and you will
probably want to. Copy HACKLITE.EXE and HACKLITE.CNF to an appropriate
directory, and edit HACKLITE.CNF as needed. The HACKDIR= line in
HACKLITE.CNF describes where to find the rest of the game files. This
can be the same as the game directory or different, as you prefer.
To play Hack Lite, you must run ANSI.SYS or a similar screen-control
package. Check your CONFIG.SYS for a line like "DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS".
If there is no such line, you will need to add one, adjusting the
disk letter and path for your particular configuration. (ANSI.SYS is
a standard DOS feature, so all you need to do is find it.) If when
you try to play Hack Lite, instead of a dungeon map you get a screen
full of weird characters, your problem is probably the lack of
ANSI.SYS.
The files HINTS.DOC and HACK.MAN provide an introduction to the game,
and some useful technical information. HINTS.DOC is the same as for
Amiga Hack Lite, so (regrettably) you will have to ignore information
therein about mouse, menus, graphics and other features not present
in the MS-DOS implementation.
Hack Lite was developed primarily for the Commodore Amiga environment.
Regrettably, the classy graphics of Amiga Hack Lite could not easily be
ported to the PC, due to the usual hardware (640K) and software (MS-DOS)
limitations. Even without the graphics, Hack Lite is an entertaining
(some say addictive) game, and of possible interest to unfortunates
who chose the wrong sort of hardware in a careless moment. If you'd
like to see the graphics version, you are urged to try the Amiga out...
as a bonus you'll get a multitasking operating system that runs in a
megabyte. (Don't tell me that you BELIEVED the propaganda that a
multitasking operating system needs eight megs or so...)
