  3. If you've used terminals or workstations that provide a "compose"
  4. key, you'll already have an idea of what JKey can do. JKey allows
  5. mnemonic sequences to be entered to achieve the keyboard entry of
  6. a difficult character. For instance, the copyright symbol (⌐) is
  7. composed of the letters 'C' and 'O'; the 1/2 symbol (╜) is composed
  8. of the numbers '1' and '2'.
  9.  
  10. JKey provides such functionality and more: 
  11.  
  12. - you can define your own sequences.
  13.  
  14. - unlike some keyboard macro applications, you are not limited
  15. to defining a single key as a trigger. You can define easily
  16. remembered mnemonic triggers.
  17.  
  18. - you can define sequences that result in the current date and
  19. time, formatted to your specifications.
  20.  
  21. - you can define application-specific compose sequences.
  22.  
  23. - you can control your keyboard's behavior. For instance, you
  24. can have the Caps Lock key always upper case characters, switch
  25. the behavior of the Ctrl and Caps Lock keys, and control the
  26. state of NumLock and ScrollLock.

  28. Notes about this first version:
  29.  
  30. - There is no installation program, it must be installed
  31. by hand, which is described below.
  32.  
  33. - Startup performance during everyday use can be increased
  34. by starting JKey minimized. This delays the loading of the
  35. main JKey form.
  36.  
  37. - Certain applications (e.g. terminal emulators) might not
  38. work well with JKey. For these apps, edit the JKEY.INI
  39. file found in your Windows directory and add the following
  40. section:
  41.  
  42.    [PostStringApps]
  43.    Nbr=2
  44.    App1=winqvt.exe
  45.    App2=winvt.exe
  46.  
  47. *** Installation is currently done by hand:
  48.  
  49. 1. Create a \JKEY directory
  50.  
  51. 2. Copy JKEY.EXE, JKEY2.DLL, JKEY.TXT, JKEY.DAT, JKEY.HLP to \JKEY
  52.  
  53. 3. You also need the following in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory:
  54.       VBRUN300.DLL, COMMDLG.DLL, CMDIALOG.VBX, GRID.VBX, THREED.VBX
  55.  
  56.    These are supplied with JKey, compare file dates to ensure that
  57.    older versions do not overwrite newer versions.
