Since I noticed that my previous message had typos in the title I am
posting this to correct those and add some additional information.
CPF should have been CFP (Call for Papers) and visualization was
spelled wrong.

VENDOR SHOW:
There are still Vendor booths available for vendors of hardware and/or
software related to graphics & visualization.  This would be an
opportunity to reach a research community that uses these tools in a
variety of ways.

DEADLINE:
January 12, 1996.

It sure does work under W95 (in your regular DOS-box), but for some strange reason I have to
start it twice. The first time I get the message "non-standard serial port" or some such
nonsense. I then exit TWIN on the PC, and execute it again, and - hey presto - everything works
fine.

The Executive Committee of the Tri-Cities ACM SIGGRAPH unit
is calling for papers to be presented at the Graphics and
Visualization (GViz) '96 Conference. The conference will
support information exchange by hosting both a Vendor Show
and Technical Papers Presentation Session. We seek papers
addressing computer graphics and visualization techniques
applicable to the research interests of the Hanford area.

The Technical Papers session schedule will be published by

Is this the same Vertex on the Amiga that was shareware for a while? It
supported a lot of formats, but I was unaware it did trees. Can it export

Have you seen any RPL text files out there along with sample
objects/scenes?

Yep, it'll export the trees; I have successfully moved some to Lightwave
for rendering there.  Fair warning: trees can chew through many polygons
if you want a lot of detail (many tens of thousands is not unfathomable
for a single fairly detailed tree).  Leaves can take a lot also esp. if
your leaf geometry is more than something very simple.

I don't know about shareware; I didn't discover it until it was
commercial.

I confess I haven't looked very hard; I have only had the program for a
week so far.  But I did download one scene that included some RPL stuff.
I haven't tried it yet.  I think the R3DV3.3 also comes with a bunch of
RPL examples but I haven't really explored them yet either.

There's also a R3D mailing list, although I'm not on it so I don't know
what it is like.

DISAGREE - you're not trying hard enough!

I have the occasional same problem as the original poster (Cmak?) but it
doesn't happen very often. Modeller will just dump me out under NT as well.
Only happens every couple of days though. (Usually Lightwaving 6 to 8 hours
per day).

However, IMHO, NT is much more stable and quicker than 95 .

I'm afraid it's LW - it is covered in the FAQ's wherever they are now.
Use Postscript Type 1 fonts and you won't have this problem. I presume it will
be a bug fix soon.

OK - until someone starts an official list of wanted features - lets add to
this one (bandwidth permitting).

Off the top of my head - I'd like to see a couple of user definable preview
modes. E.g.: F9 gives you lo-res no antialising. Shift F9 gives you low-res
trace low AA. Alt Shift F9 is med - res, etc. This way the camera can be set
to what ever you want to do your final render in and you don't have to
constantly change it. (I usually find I get up in the morning and find I've
reset the resolution and antialiasing but forgotten to switch on field render
because it's useless in still frame previews.)

Anyone for any more?

(I'm not griping - I love LW, but user feedback should be good)

Sounds like it could be a dongle problem as well.. make sure your
dongle is seated right.

Got LW running on NT but am having two problems (I know I should
be thankful there are only two) :-).

1. After I load the macros in modeler (from the hard drive) and
then exit modeler, when I reload modeler the list of macros nor
their assigned keys are still listed. I have to reload each time.
What file is it not saving, a config?

2. When I close down layout I get 'error: can't open
configuration file'?

How can I fix these two problems?

I have had the same problem. When you go to load a text,
go to "add type-1" instead of "add truetype", and then change the
"files of type" from PSfonts to All files. Then load your font.
I'm sure there are better solutions...but this works.

Depends on just what you're asking.  Personally I think that system is
going to be pretty cramped (and very slow) even for hobbyist use running
LW.  If I were you, I'd consider at a rock bottom minimum: 68040, 8 Mb
(32 bit RAM, not 16), VMM.  And if you can afford it, 68060+16 Mb makes
a decent system.  You can at least do some useful things in 8 Mb, where
with 5 Mb its pretty tough to do much of anything.  Some people will
probably argue you can do things in 5 Mb, but it is going to be very
limited and annoying.  It'll get a little better if you use VMM, but
there's only so far you can push it.

Another possible route is a PC; a good chunk of the Amiga graphics
software has been ported to it now (LW, Real3D, Imagine, ADPro, etc).
You can get cheap CPU power.  There are others reasons to stick with the
Amiga; it just depends on exactly what you're after.

The latest version (2.0) of the Microsoft Internet Explorer www browser
supports in-line AVI animations on web pages.

Unfortunately, MSIE is only available for Win95 at present, but it's a
free download from http://www.microsoft.com/

Examples of this can be seen at the Microsoft web site, and on ours as
well. If you have MSIE, you see an animation that repeats the entire time
you're reading the page, and if you don't, you see a regular static GIF
instead. In-line AVI's and in-line .wav or .mid files require version 2.0
of the MSIE.

You'd figure that with today's OS technology that WinNT and Win95 would have
such a thing.  Alas, the PC world still has single drive letters and can give
names to disks yet can't access them via their names.  No soft or hard links
for either WinNT or Win95 (ooohhh...  Shortcuts....) that I'm aware of (if I
were, I'd definately be using 'em!).  It's amazing how much power AmigaDOS has
that still doesn't exist in the PC realm...

(Sounds like a platform war type of message.  I appologize...  I have a hard
time digesting what I see going on in the computing industry...  PC folk that
haven't had it don't know what they're missing or realize the potential...
Us power hungry folk get hung out to dry...)

Well, concerning the ClubToaster CD---I was attempting to use the
newest DISK 6 to no avail, however, for some reason 2-5 seem to be
fine at using the iff's.  As for objects and such I haven't tried
that...but atleast I'm getting somewhere

Greetings, all!

I've got an _ANNOYING_ problem, that spans versions and platforms.

Certain Boolean operations (usually Subtract) result in a "Polygon
Partitioning Error".  There is no discernible pattern or cause for
this pest.

As a solution, Modeler says "Add small offset to data and try again".
To which data; the cutter or the main object?  Offset relative to
what; world co-ordinates, or cutter to object (i.e. between operating
data sets?)

Once it shows up, I have to start all over.  It cannot be made to go
away.  I check for non-planar or misaligned polygons -- no good.
Checks for excess points also avails nothing.  (I am referring to both
data sets here.)  I have seen this in Amiga Modeler versions 3.0 thru 3.5
and on the PC Intel version (Win3.x/95).

Please email info to [e-mail], as I can't seem to get this
newsgroup from the main terraport server.

The codes are as follows:

    -2    Can't load plug-in module
    -1    Can't find plug-in module
    0    OK
    1    Plug-in wrong version
    2    Plug-in can't find global data
    3    Plug-in called with bad parameters

These last two shouldn't happen in production code.  These should have
been in the manual.

You say Modeler but you describe Layout (Modeler has no lights or
cameras).  Which of the two programs are you having trouble with,
as the diagnosis may be very different for each.

We're always interested in user suggestions -- some of our best
enhancements came directly from ideas suggested by users.  Allen and I
keep lists of new ideas, one for Layout and one for Modeler.  If I
see a good Modeler idea here, I'll probably write it in my notebook.  I
don't know how much Allen reads this group, so I can't speak for him.

NewTek maintains a bug-tracking database with the capability to include
suggestions, but it is only accessable to beta-testers.  If a beta-tester
here wants to act as net-conduit and forward suggestions (and bug reports)
