- We have several animations that would consume our machines from doing other
- required development work. If there was an outfit I could send our scenes to
- and have rendered for a fee, it would speed things up greatly.

- Here's a suggestion for a Layout improvement. It will probably seem a
- little lazy, but so be it. How about a button to copy a current light's
- intensity envelope to it's lens flare intensity, or vice versa. Not
- necessary by any means, just convenient.

- The better is not so important. If you can do what they basically say, and you
- can see the tremendous amount of people usin 3D Studio, the basic choice is
- 3D Studio.
-
- But,,, if you want to animate, or make a lot of animation compared with
- modelling, try to see SOFTIMAGE|3D. Yes, it is expesive, and you computer must
- be a powerful machine, but this soft is on other galaxy.

- Yes, one of the problems is that wooden axles don't hold up over the long
- term. And, I couldn't even *think* of using one of my wooden Duncans with
- a nylon string (an abomination if there ever was one).

-
- Actually, I've never had any problem with my old Imperial (one with a
- chevron stamp, rather than a fleur-de-lis--it is just a touch narrower
- than the newer ones). I've never cared much for Butterflys...actually, I
- rather like the mass of a Mardi-Gras. Actually, the problems you invoke

- drastically in the last 30 years...

- No, as I said, I'm not an animator. Ever tried to create 3D spline based
- sufaces, and generate machine code or .stl files from them? TrueSpace is
- terrible at this also (as is Lighwave, 3DS, and even Autocad). I'm not
- saying that trueSpace is useful for animation. I am pointing out that

-
- There are times when a pencil in the right hands will give far better
- output than high end software on a SGI. It just depends on the task at
- hand and the talent in those hands.
-
- You seem to have missed my point: I am not doing animation. I am doing
- rendering of some of our existing cad drawings for illustration.
- TrueSpace is a great tool for this job. It is no way a toy when it comes
- to this task. I doubt that I could import cad files and and create a
- a rendered image as fast in Lightwave or 3DS. I'm not making movies,
- just a few quick drawings to use in assembly docs. The modeless interface
- is a real no brainer to use. This is important when, like me, you tend
- to misplace your brain from time to time.
-
- To respond to your next post:
-
- Our shop uses Microstation and Cadkey for cad modeling, and Surfcam for
- G-Code post processing. We used to use Autocad. Now there is a program
- (Acad) that I would classify as a toy. Pro/E is another interesting
- example when it comes to evaluating which tool is appropriate for the
- job. Most of its bloated feature set just gets in the way in designing
- everyday parts. Just wondering, have you ever tried to use Pro/E?
- Cadkey, even though it is a $700. program, will blow Pro/E away on
- designing simple parts. Just because it is inexpensive does not mean
- that it is not a powerful application.

- There's no Animation Master newsgroup as of yet per se, but there is a
- mail list server that gets 20-30 messages a day.
-
- Hash also has their web site at: http://www.has.com/~hashinc/
-
- There are links from there to other 3D sites. A number of good tutorial
- pieces are surfacing now in Acrobat format.
-
- I have both programs, and to be honest, AM beats LW hands down for doing
- character animation. I've had the beta of V4 for a month now, but
- haven't been able to play with all the features yet such as collision
- detection and "Blobbies". The lip sync module is due soon as well.
-
- The interface is different, but not any more foreign than LW. Modeling
- in AM is much faster I think than LW, but it all comes down to practice.
- I can export an AM object in DXF and then import into LW. There are no
- surface assignments unfortunately, but so it goes.

- It does depend on the object that you are building. You are on the
- right track, just keep beveling.
-
- To make rounded edges, I typically follow the method of using
- multiple bevels. I have found that three bevels is plenty even when
- the camera has to get close. I pick 2 values that are used for inset
- and shift. example 20mm inset and 40 mm shift. The larger the
- numbers, the larger the final radius will be. I then do the following
- sequence.
-
- 1. select the polygon to bevel.
- 2. bevel 20mm inset and 40 mm shift.
- 3. on the same polygon bevel 30mm inset 30mm shift ( This value is
- halfway between the original values.)
- 4. on the same polygon bevel 40mm inset 20mm shift.
-
- This will give a nice rounded edge.
-
- Once again it doesn't work for all cases, but I have found it usefull
- in a number of projects. (Hmmm, I do this enough that a plugin should
- be created. Maybe the user could enter the upper and lower values
- plus the number of bevels..............)

- The example you show above is an old Videoscape object format correct?
- Would it be called pyramid.obj? Is there a special way to load it into
- Lightwave layout?
- I am not to concerned with colors, but I would like to specify normals
- at the vertices. Does Lightwave let you do this or are you restricted
- to letting it come up with it's own normals? Also I note the numbers
- above are all integers. Will Lightwave take float's or do I have to
- say multiply by 10000 and truncate my data?
-
- Thanks for the help

- I use AutoCad and Microstation as a CADD Designer. I use Lightwave as a
- computer animator. Animation packages such as Lightwave are good
- visualization tools, but they are not well suited for design work. It is
- an apples and oranges situation. Lightwave is a polygonal based program.
- A true circle does not exist in Lightwave. All objects are made of a
- series of points that are referenced to form numerous single plane
- polygons. Numerous flat polygons arranged in a sphereical array form
- spheres. I do prefer modeling 3D objects with the Lightwaves modeler.
- The multiple views of Autocad and Microstation are not linked together
- like they are with the Lightwave modeler. Lightwave can handle accuracy
- of micro meters to million of kilometers. A model with sub-millimeter
- accuracy can be placed in a scene with models that are millions of
- meters in size. Lightwave does get flakey when you work with very
- large extremes in scale. Modeling a single cell organism in a full-scale
- solar system is pushing it. This is actually IMPOSSIBLE with
- microstation, which uses an interger, rather than floating point,
- numerical system. Lightwave is as accurate as Autocad. But, depending on
- what your goal is, I would not necessarily reccomed it as a design tool.

- I would love to know what Real3D is being used for on a commercial
- level. Who is using it and what are they creating. I'd like some
- examples. I know of game titles, tv shows, commercials, movies, etc
- that have been created with all the packages, except for Real3D
-
- I keep hearing how much power it has, but I've not seen much done with
- it. I've messed with the Real3D demo and I really do not like it at
- all, I'd rather use the DOS interface on 3D Studio than Real 3D. We
- have chosen Lightwave which has a hell of alot of power and is nice to
- use, It's still got the Amiga interface that it has, but we've grown
- quite comfortable with it. Obviously we are not the only ones that
- like Lightwave, but a number of television shows have been done with
- Lightwave. As far as getting new features, the Lightwave plug-ins are
- not a killer on the pocketbook, especially if you do design work
- commericially, you can recoup the cost with one project. And NewTek
- gives you the SDK on the CD so you can develop your own plug-ins if
- need to extend the power, we're working on some of our own right now.
- I don't see how putting time into a program is being used as an
- argument for Real3D, I'd prefer to put time into Lightwave and have a
- few killer scenes than to spend the time with Real3D to figure out how
- to get the right window up for the operation I want.
-
- We also use Animation Master, which even without the book is easy to
- use, it's got a very clean object oriented design structure to it, as
- well as having the most powerful organic modelers this side of buying
- Alias.

- Well first of all, if you properly installed the DC20 drivers, you
- should have an AVI option in Lightwave for the DC20 MJPEG format. That
- way you can render directly to a MJPEG file and not go through the
- Premiere compiling and compression. I just downloaded the lastest
- drivers from the Miro web site and they installed fine with my DC20.
- Also try different resolutions with the DC20 drivers to save file space,
- it can render in Letterbox and/or with TV cropping.

- I have heard that Particle Storm is better/easier than Sparks. However, we
- only have Sparks and it just paid for itself easily on the short animation I
- just finished. I had fun making a Comet/Star object that just couldn't have
- been done economically without a plugin of some sort. I didn't find Sparks
- intuitive, but I did have my comet trail 90% done in about an hour by looking
- at the included examples and reading the manual while tests rendered. The
- writer of the manual has a good sense of humor to boot.
-
- The basic paradigm is that you create an object made up of single point
- polygons. Sparks (which is an object displacement plugin) then has the
- ability to "spray" particles off in the direction of the object's Y axis. It
- can have gravity act on the particles. You can also change various parameters
- that affect the "spray".
-
- Particles can be made to bounce and colide as well.
-
- Even if Particle Storm is better, I have no regrets about Sparks.

- Can Renderman shaders be used with LW? If so, in what form (ascii,

- I've got the same problems with quite the same computer:
- 10megs in layout : win95 will free more if needed !
- garbage in preview : use the win 95 "trio 968" drivers and it'll fine but
- interleaced in 1024*768

- Actually, I think it solidifies your position because it was so poorly done,
- and because it is the exact type of response one would expect when there isn't
- a very good legitimate counter response available. If you can't debate the
- facts, debate the person.

- No. The information in that window is actually not particularly relevant to
- anything. In fact, I believe NewTek considered removing it. Don't worry.
- All your RAM is probably working for you.

- My best guess is that you need updated video drivers. Most display problems
- in LightWave reported here get resolved that way.
-
- >In Lightwave, Wireframe previews render garbage.

- See above. I have a Diamond DRAM PCI card ( I forget the model, but it is
- not a particularly expensive one - Diamond Stealth Video I think?) and it
- works fine. I only have 1mb installed as well (though there is an additional
- 1mb tacked to the bulletin board ) that I will install next time I open the
- case - No, the tack does not go through the chips.)

-
- OOH! I forgot. You might try using the sliders for the video display to
- reduce the degree of hardware accelleration used by the drivers. I forget the
- steps to get there, but will check for you if you can't figure it out.
