INTRODUCTION
|lns 1,96,0

|col 2,0
Welcome to Xetec's Fish & More Volume III. A CD-ROM packed full of freely
distributable software for Amiga computers. This disc contains disks 1 thru
910 of the Fred Fish collection as well as a large assortment of pictures,
sounds, and animations. In all, over 620 Megabytes!

ORGANIZATION
|lns 1,96,0
|fnt topaz 8
|col 2,0
There are two "sides" to this disc: the "Fish" side contains every program
from the (current) Fred Fish collection, organized by disk. The "More" side
contains pictures, sounds, and animations.
When you first open the CD-ROM disc icon, you will notice among other
miscellaneous icons a big fish and a big plus sign; these are the "Fish"
and "More" directories, repectively. They are the gateways to all the
stuff on the disc.
The "More" side audio and pictures are best accessed from a directory utility
(such as SID by Timm Martin) or directly from your audio/graphics processing
software. The animations, however, can be accessed successfully from
Workbench.

|col 2,0
Keep in mind when using the CD-ROM that nothing can be modified (the data
is PERMANENT). This means that drawers cannot be renamed, windows cannot
be permanently moved or resized, etc. Also, if a program needs to write
config files or other data, they must be routed to a magnetic disk somewhere,
or the program will not run from CD-ROM. If that's the case, just copy the
program and its associated files to a disk and use it there.

MODIFICATIONS
|lns 1,104,0
|fnt topaz 8
|col 2,0
The Fish disks have been reproduced as faithfully as possible. Several
minor changes were incurred, however, in order to make operation from a
CD-ROM disc possible or save space and pack as much data as possible onto
this disc:
|col 2,5
* Fred's ReadMe files that are always the same from disk to disk (Orders,
Distribution, etc.) were removed from each individual disk and the most
up-to-date versions appear in the "Text_Files" drawer. Each disk's
"Contents" files remain, however.
* "Obsolete" programs (ones which were subsequently updated and appear on
this disc) have been compressed, since they will rarely be more useful
than the newest version. Each compressed program includes an "UnPack"
icon as well as a ReadMe which gives you the disk number where you can
find the newest version. One exception: programs that include the source
code but all newer versions do not -- these were left uncompressed for
your convenience.
* Many of the lower Fish disks (the first 100 or so) did not consistently
have drawer and program icons. To help make these lower disks somewhat
more usable from Workbench, many of the disks' windows have been set to
show "all files." Note that this does not help users running a pre-2.0
operating system.
* The utilities in the C directory of each Fish disk have been merged into
one big C directory at the root of this disc. This saves space by not
duplicating the same text reader (for example) for every disk. This
also is the way that allows Fred's icons to work best on this disc.
Note: if you copy a program off this disc, you may have to change the
default tool paths in the icons to suit the rest of your system so that
the appropriate commands can be found. For information concerning icons
and modifying them, consult your user manual or other suitable documen-
tation.

DISTRIBUTION
|lns 1,96,0
|fnt topaz 8
|col 2,0
The data contained on this disc is all considered "Freely distributable."
The programs actually vary widely in their legal status. Included documen-
tation usually indicates how the information can and cannot be distributed.
Most fall into one of the following catagories:
|fnt topaz 11
|col 3,5
Public Domain
|fnt topaz 8
|col 2,5
The author(s) have relinquished all rights to you, the end user. You may
freely use the programs and data and/or distribute them in any way you
wish. You may modify the source code (if provided) or incorporate it
into another program.
|fnt topaz 11
|col 3,5
ShareWare
|fnt topaz 8
|col 2,5
The author usually holds a copyright on the program, but has allowed
some degree of free distribution in hopes that the target audience will
get their hands on it and pay a suggested fee to the author if it proves
useful. Some authors provide source code, extended documentation, support,
or updates to registered users (ones who've paid). We have not compensated
any of the authors of the programs on this disc, so you are not released
from your ShareWare obligations to the respective authors.
|fnt topaz 11
|col 3,5
Limited Use
|fnt topaz 8
|col 2,5
Software in this catagory can usually be distributed freely and used
without paying shareware fees. The author, however, usually holds the
copyright and thereby can impose any limitations on its use, distribution,
use of the source code, and generation of modified versions. Some authors
release their programs this way to ensure they get a little credit. That's
not asking too much.
|fnt topaz 11
|col 3,5
OtherWare
|fnt topaz 8
|col 2,5
Of course there are some pieces that don't fit well into any of the above
classifications. Be especially careful not to violate their distribution
rules.
|col 2,0
Since the software on the CD-ROM falls into each of the listed catagories,
be sure you read the documention and know WHAT you can do with the program
BEFORE you use the code or give away a copy. Remember, simply owning this
disc does not imply that you own each program on this disc. You must still
abide by each authors wishes, similar to if you had downloaded the program
from a BBS.
If you know for a fact that some information on this Fish & More disc is
not distributable in such a manner, please inform us and we will make sure
to omit it from future releases. We have attempted to acquire the
information only from reliable sources. Unfortunately, however, there
are those individuals who love to strip out copyright information or
tamper with documentation files. If you see your handiwork included here
against your wishes, we solemnly apologize. Once again, be sure to keep us
informed.
If you have a program or data that you wish to be considered for distribution
on future releases of this disc, submit them to:

If the data will appear on a Fred Fish disk, we'll get it from him. Some
programs, however, (like a 10 Meg digitized song--grin), are just too
unreasonable to be distributed by Fred. CD-ROM is perfect for such things.
Submit all data on floppies. Use an archiver like QuarterBack or X-chive
to split large files onto multiple disks. Xetec cannot return the floppies
unless special arrangements have been made.

USE ON NON-AMIGA SYSTEMS
|lns 1,192,0
|fnt topaz 8
|col 2,0
Although this disc is in ISO 9660 format, which implies that is is readable
on any platform that supports this standard, that may not always be true.
This is because we have opted to use ISO 9660's interchange level 2 so that
Amiga filenames could be reproduced faithfully (up to 30 characters, upper
and lower case). Many platforms (such as IBM's) only support interchange
level 1. In these cases, level 2 disc such as this will not work well or
at all.

ABOUT CD TECHNOLOGY
|lns 1,152,0
|fnt topaz 8
|col 2,0
CD-ROM stands for Compact Disc Read Only Memory. The CD-ROM and it's cousin,
the audio Compact Disc both use optical technology to permanently record data
(either software or music) on a plastic disc (that's right, DISCS are plastic
while DISKS are magnetic--confusing, isn't it). Data is packed on a CD-ROM
(and CD's as well) at a mind-boggling density.
CD-ROM discs, although they are quite rugged, should be handled with care.
While you can abuse audio CD's and they'll still usually play, CD-ROM's
require a higher level of data integrity. So treat me nicely, or parts of
me will quit loading! Leave the disc in its case or a caddy at all times.

HISTORY
|lns 1,56,0
|fnt topaz 8
|col 2,0
Xetec, Inc. was founded in 1983, making peripherals and software for VIC-20
and Commodore 64/128 computers. Our A-1000 arrived in 1985 (a month before
the Kickstart & Workbench disks were available!), which began a long love
affair with the Amiga. Our first products were SCSI controllers and streaming
tape drives.
In March of 1990 we gathered information and began preliminary programming
to test the idea of an Amiga CD-ROM system. Although in those early days
very few SCSI controllers supported SCSI-direct (which is necessary for
CD-ROM support), the project progressed rapidly toward a usable, marketable
product.
We quickly realized that the IBM and government discs we had been using for
testing would not be enough support for this new technology. So we set out
to make a CD-ROM disc containing software that Amiga owners could use and
appreciate. Our natural choice was the Fred Fish collection. After
receiving from Fred our shipment of the (then) 370 disks, we pushed into
further uncharted waters as we attempted to produce the disc.
Back then, no disc replicator had even heard of an Amiga, but they would
gladly accept the information in Mac or MS-DOS formats, thank you. Well,
necessity being the mother of invention, we dug out the ISO 9660 document
again and wrote our own program which would translate from AmigaDOS to
ISO 9660. Easily said, but it took over 10,000 lines of code to pull this
baby off.
Finally, in November of '90 it all came together when we shipped our first
CD-ROM systems, complete with Fish & More volume I.

No warranty is expressed or implied as to the contents of this disc. All data
is presented "as is." Xetec, Fred Fish, and the individual authors make no
warranty as to the quality, performance, merchantibility, or fitness for a
particular purpose. Xetec, Fred Fish, and the individual authors will, in no
event, be liable for the misapplication or failure of any of the included
programs. Your sole remedy will be replacement of a defective disc. This
warranty is exclusive of all others, expressed or implied. So there.
The retail price of this disc covers only the cost of acquiring, compiling,
producing, and replicating the disc. This equates to less than 3 cents per
Fish disk included, so we believe we are not violating the spirit of the
authors' request of only charging minimal duplication costs.
Refer questions, bug reports, praise, complaints, money, etc. to the respective
author(s) of each program. Also, don't take any wooden nickels, never give a
sucker an even break, no user-serviceable parts inside, and to avoid the risk
of electric shock, remove power before bathing with any kitchen appliances.
The copyright for most of the programs on this disc are held by their authors.
No claim is made by Xetec to these copyrights.

Special thanks goes out to...
Fred Fish -- for his special efforts which have helped mature the Amiga
software community.
My wife and daughter -- for putting up with my frequent absence during this
project.
Timm Martin, Glenn Gribble, and B. Lennart Olsson -- for the use of each of
their programs.
All of the authors who have labored long into the night to support the Amiga,
often for nothing in return but a bit of recognition. Your unending support
has been instrumental in bringing the Amiga to where it is today, as well as
making this disc possible.
Enjoy...
