- "BrightFutures"
-
- composed by Stuart Fox
- (c) 1995
-
- Converted to Music-X and arranged for Music-X and MIDI file formats
- by Kevan R.Craft. Dec 1995
-
-
- "Bright Futures" started out as an OctaMED MMD1 module using IFF samples
- of GM MIDI instruments so made the conversion quite well to a Standard MIDI
- File (SMF) format 1 using the "MID IT" converter utility.. This was then
- converted to Music-X Performance file format where further enhancements to
- the score was undertaken..
-
- This peice has been extensively arranged and now includes new DRUMS and
- PERCUSSION, BASS GUITAR and STRINGS. An ENDING has been added also..
-
- Because there existed quite a few stops and starts in the original score, a
- fair amount of filling-in-the-gaps was required because 4-track Tracker
- modules, by their very nature tend to leave out chords, decent hi hat
- patterns, etc. These gaps have to be filled in. A Korg i3 Interactive
- Workstation was used together with Music-X V2.0 on an Amiga 2000..
-
- In order to produce the various new tracks, a "Control Track" method was
- used in order to construct building blocks for the sequences.. The drums
- was a simple matter of loading in a particular style and extracting the
- drum and percussion data then placing "PSEQ" (PlaySequence) events, in the
- "Control Track" informing Music-X when to play these little MIDI snippets!
- For the Bass Guitar and Strings, the root-chord was copied from the Piano
- which aided a construction of a master template of the root chord changes
- for the complete score.. The Korg i3's MIDI-Clock function was then set to
- "EXT" so the Music-X sequencer running on the Amiga became the MASTER.. As
- the root-note of the first piano chord was "A" (the song's also in the KEY
- of "A"), then selecting the lower "A" KEY on the Korg i3 provides a KEY and
- starting point.. In the Korg i3, the 6-part Arrangement mode comes with 6-
- preset MIDI instrument accompaniment parts which play along with the
- keyboard player but these can also be controlled via "MIDI-Clocks" as long
- as their is a source containing a musical KEY..
-
- The i2/i3 Interactive Workstation possess a "Chord Scanning" facility
- (Lower, Upper, Full); which will enable the Korg i-Series to respond to
- musical chord changes. Initially, this is undertaken from the actual
- keyboard using the LEFT HAND, when you make the chord the Korg i-Series
- (i2/i3) changes the backing MIDI musical note data in perfect musical time.
- The initial use of this "Chord Scanning" is for live performance but this
- and all the other features can be controlled via MIDI!
-
- This is where the root-chords from the piano comes in.. These chords were
- all 1/2 bar notes, in 4/4 time, so each chord change occurs every half bar.
- Using this as a master chord change template then, this permitted being
- transmitted to the Korg i3 on MIDI Channel 2, the i3 was programmed to
- respond to MIDI channel 2 via MIDI-Clocks.. The Drums, Percussion and
- 3 remaining accompaniment parts were switched off. Only the Bass Guitar
- part was permitted to be transmitted. The great thing about employing this
- method to generate a new instrument part is that as soon as the external
- Sequencer transmits MIDI information, and channel 2 MIDI notes are received
- by the Korg i3, and as the KEY "A" has been depressed then the bass guitar
- simply begins as soon as the keyboard responds to MIDI-Clocks.. The
- MIDI information is then re-transmitted back on MIDI Channel 12 containing
- a NEW Bass Guitar part and recorded into the sequencer.. This method is a
- little fiddly but it WORKS!
-
- The same principle was employed to generate a new string part simply
- changing between the 4 variations from a Korg i3 style containing a cute
- string arrangement..
-
- In addition, further "PSEQ" (Play sequence) events were placed into Music-
- X's "Control Track" sequence, informing the sequencer when to play the
- various sequence tracks playing both the new Bass Guitar and String parts..
-
- Simple when you know how..
-
- Stuart Fox, from the UK, has already composed and arranged music for 2
- school Performance productions in his school theatre, produced 2 cassette
- tape albums and composed music for the MIDICraft Magazine..
-
- Stuart has kindly donated his work for inclusion on the "MIDI NET" CD-ROM,
- as with all original compositions, his work is subject to copyright, and,
- although he doesn't mind anyone examining his work for educational purposes
- and for fun, if you intend to include his music in any recorded Media form
- then please contact the composer himself for his permission..
