  3.                  Win95/98/NT Freeware Folder Sorting Utility

  6. Some programs need to have files in a particular order within a directory.
  7. However, Explorer always shows you a sorted view which will usually bear no
  8. relation to the actual sort order of the folder concerned (use a DOS box to
  9. do a DIR in the folder and see the difference - providing you haven't used
  10. the DIRCMD environment variable to make DIR use a sorted listing). Even when
  11. you have files physically sorted in a folder, a simple operation like renaming
  12. a file can actually change this order (again, try a DOS DIR before and after
  13. a renaming operation). This utility will sort files in one of four ways -
  14. by name, by name (reversed order), by extension or by extension (reversed
  15. order). Plenty of utilities to do this existed for DOS/Win3.1 but with the
  16. rise of long filenames and 32-bit FATs these utilities have become useless -
  17. and a quick search for Win95 versions found there to be only a few such
  18. utilities which were all shareware. Considering how much effort is needed
  19. to write such a utility, I think that's daylight robbery, so here we are -
  20. a freeware one.

  22. Installation:

  25. Run SETUP.EXE. You can choose which folder to install to, and whether
  26. to create shortcuts to FolderSort in your Start Menu or on your
  27. Desktop. There is also an option to install FolderSort as a shell
  28. extension; if you choose to do so (this is the default), you will
  29. be able to right-click on folders in Explorer windows and click on
  30. a new menu option titled 'Sort'. Two guesses what that will do :)

  32. The file size of SETUP.EXE, incidentally, should be precisely
  33. 175,616 bytes - if it isn't, it may be infected with a virus so go to
  34. http://www.jetman.dircon.co.uk/software/index.html and grab a good copy.

  36. FolderSort has been tested on Win95 and (briefly) on Win98. Previous
  37. versions have worked on WinNT4 so I see no reason why this one will
  38. fall over - please let me know if there any problems.

  40. Uninstalling:

  42. If you chose to create Start Menu shortcuts when installing, you'll
  43. have a shortcut called 'Uninstall FolderSort', so use that. Failing
  44. that you can use Start|Settings|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs;
  45. pick 'FolderSort' from the list there and click the 'Add/Remove...'
  46. button.

  48. What's new in v1.1:
  49. ===================
  50. * There is now a box to tick if you want it to sort all the sub-folders of
  51.   the selected folder, the one thing everyone asked for!
  52. * The progress bar has been dropped as now sub-folders are supported the
  53.   program would have to run through the folder structure just to get a total
  54.   number of files in order to make the progress bar accurate. Seems rather
  55.   pointless to spend all that time for little reason, particularly now the
  56.   folder selector shows which folder is being worked on.
  57. * Slight re-arrangement of the user interace.
  58. * Installation and uninstallation support.
  59. * Optional shell extension.
  60. * The program also now saves its settings in FolderSort.ini (not the
  61.   registry, I don't like the way programs can lose their settings just
  62.   because Windows is having a bad day).

  64. Using FolderSort:

  67. The large box at the top lists the folders on the selected drive (the control
  68. for selecting the drive is immediately below). Select the folder you wish to
  69. sort by double-clicking it, select the sort type (the control next to the
  70. drive selector) and click Sort.

  75. Most users can ignore this section. Chances are if you have any questions
  76. at all about the stuff here, you don't need to know about it :)

  78. FolderSort accepts several command line parameters, these are:
  79.  
  80. foldername    Sort this folder. Uses current configuration. As used by
  81.               the shell extension option.
  82. /I            Re-install shell extension option.
  83. /U            Uninstall.
  84. /U /S         Uninstall silently (no confirmation or completion dialog).

  89. This program is FREEWARE. I accept no responsibility for any harm or loss
  90. caused by the use of it. I.E. if you resort a folder and it ends up with the
  91. files listed in an order that causes your mind to become unhinged, don't
  92. come crying to me.

  94. FolderSort is freeware. You may not charge money for it, with one exception:
  95. if you are putting out a CD full of shareware/freeware/etc. and want to
  96. include FolderSort you may do so but on the condition that you send me a copy
  97. of the CD (and magazine if bundled). Email me to get my postal address and
  98. formal permission.
