  1. This directory contains a crc listing for disks 129-145 in my library, 
  2. generated directly from my current master disks.  The crc file for disk
  3. 142 could not be produced because it consistently caused the crc program
  4. to guru.  Each listing was generated with a sequence of commands of the
  5. form:
  6.  
  7.     rls >ram:d001.files -q df0:
  8.     crc <ram:d001.files >ram:d001.crc -g
  9.     crc <ram:d001.crc -v
  10.  
  11. The last command is simply a check to make sure that the crc list
  12. can be used to validate the disk contents.

  14. These lists can tell you a lot about the state of your copy of
  15. the library disks, but NOT whether or not you have an exact
  16. duplicate of the library disk master.  In particular:
  17.  
  18.     (1)    This mechanism only validates the file contents.
  19.         Generally this is what you are most interested in.
  20.  
  21.     (2)    It will not detect files which have been added
  22.         to a disk by a third party (and hence are not on
  23.         my master disks).
  24.  
  25.     (3)    It will not detect that a disk is infected with
  26.         a bootblock virus.
  27.  
  28. If you regularly distribute large numbers of my disks to third
  29. parties, and one of your disks fails the CRC checks, you should
  30. probably arrange to acquire a "good" copy.  To ensure that only
  31. valid copies are passed on, the disks should remain write protected
  32. at all times.
